Members of the Winnebago Council Finance Campaign Committee met in Allison to plan the October fundraising drive for 1958. Kenneth Allbaugh led the group with a council budget of 58,140 dollars supporting 4,400 registered Scouts across Butler Cerre Gordo Floyd Franklin Hancock Mitchell Winnebago Worth Wright counties and invited representatives from Allison Clarksville Shell Rock New Hartford Parkersburg Applet on Dumont Bristow to participate. Governor Herschel Loveless serves as State Campaign Chairman and Dr Eugene Garbee as State Campaign Director.
The Hoofbeats drill team will present a horse show on September 29 at 1 00 p m one mile south of Greene on Highway 14 with 1 4 mile east and 1 4 mile south details. Twelve classes are open to all horses within a 25 mile radius of Greene.
Richard Dean Schmidt six weeks old son of Mr and Mrs Mervin Schmid died in Rochester Minnesota Friday evening. A brief prayer service was at Hamilton Funeral Chapel Greene Monday at 1 36 pm with graveside services at Memorial Park Cemetery Mason City.
Mrs Paul Dralle of Greene dies in head on crash two miles south of New Hartford. William E Griffith of Waterloo dies. Jack Henry Caughron 30 of Waterloo injured with brain concussion. Other passengers injured. funeral services held for Mrs Dralle at Diehl Funeral Home Allison and St John Lutheran Wilmar. Survivors include husband two sons Darwin and Dean, father Peter Fick, four sisters, one brother. Burial Wilmar Cemetery.
A city committee and the planning commission formalize plans for a tennis court and a skating rink at Perrin Park. The project stems from a Women’s Club drive and park funds, with grading to start in spring after winter settling, plus curb, gutter and a new cement walk along the south end.
Wednesday night bowling results recorded for September 11 show Miller Real Estate and Bristow Elevator among top matches with 4-0 sweeps. High scores included Neil Wygle 204 and Galen Miller 202. series leaders Paul Cheney 5093 and Galen Miller 523.
The Black Hills Passion Play with a professional cast will be staged at Waterloo West High School Auditorium September 24 to 27. Josef Meier stars as Christus with Clare Hume as Mary in a 22 scene English production famed for realism and lighting. Evening shows at 8 15 p m and matinees September 24 25 at 2 00 p m with mail orders to Passion Play Headquarters Hotel President Waterloo Iowa.
Ivan Wikner Butler Extension Director resigns September 21 to pursue a masters in agronomy at Iowa State College. He holds a year leave of absence and will work with Iver Johnson and EF R Duncan during study. Wikner began as youth assistant in July 1954 and became Extension Director in March 1955. Bill Patton of Winneshiek County is hired to take over on October 1, 1957.
Butler County Chapter of the American Cancer Society holds its annual officer election at City Hall Allison Wednesday evening September 25 at 7 30. All board members officers and town and township workers urged to attend. New field director Mrs Marie Buss will attend and the film The Other City will be shown.
Iowa residents have until October 14 to apply for shotgun and bow and arrow deer licenses as the 1957 season nears. Through September 10, 3,644 licenses issued: 3,415 shotgun, 229 bow and arrow. Shotgun licenses issued first come, first served to 5,000. over 5,000 go to a possible drawing. Bow licenses unlimited through November 25. Fees are $10 per license with payment by personal check or money order.
Local Girl Scouts will sell Veterans of Foreign Wars Buddy Poppies on Saturday September 21 door to door and on main street. VFW officials say all funds stay in the state with at least half in Greene for local welfare and the rest for rehabilitation in Iowa. Proceeds support disabled veterans who make the poppies.
About 120 people attended a Conclave Monday evening at the Winnebago Council Scout Reservation near Marble Rock Iowa. Presidents of sponsoring Cub Scout Packs Boy Scout Troops and Explorer Posts plus guests were present. An outdoor supper by Explorer Post 46 Rudd preceded the program featuring Dean Galvin Charles City as Master of Ceremonies and Dr Roy Harrisville Trinity Lutheran Church Maser City who spoke on strengthening leadership through collaboration. Also on stage were Dr K B Kerr Charles City council president Herb Ohrt Man City Reservation Development Committee chair and Judge C H Wild Allison vice president of the Winnebago council.
Greene High Ramblers and Reinbeck played to a scoreless tie as rain hampered both sides. Harris ran well for Greene while Don Menken, Faber Miller and Roger Schuknecht spearheaded a strong Ramblers defense. Multiple fumbles and penalties limited scoring chances in a hard fought season opener.
The season's final dance will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Wednesday evening, September 25, with music by Glenn Riggins and his orchestra. Committees are led by Lyle Shultz, Harold Swant, Kline Sniffin, Glenn Truex, Parker Schmitz, and Jack Brandt.
Butler County selects Waterloo’s Kay Wiegman and Mary Lou Squires to represent the county in the 4-H Girls Demonstration Contest at the National Dairy Cattle Congress from September 28 to October 5. Mrs. Melvin Kollman leads the county club. Esther Whetstone directs the 67 county entrants. lectures on floral arrangement by Orville C Sutter on Wednesday and Friday afternoons. Dairy themed baked goods classes highlight butter milk and sour cream ingredients.
The Greene Quarterback Club held its second meeting Monday night at the high school. Secretary Dale Schroeder reported 28 memberships sold and committees were appointed by president Donald Hagarty. Corch Mair reviewed last week's Reinbeck game. James Mead won a free ticket drawing for the Iowa Utah State game. next meeting is September 23 at 7 30 p m in the high school cafeteria with another free ticket drawing for the Iowa Washington game.
The Mothers Club of Sacred Heart Academy will hold a coffee hour at Inter State Power Company office tomorrow September 19 from 9 am to 5 pm.
Butler County farmers will attend a fall field day at the Carrington Clyde Experiment Farm near Independence on September 20. Extension Director Ivan Wikner notes over 50 corn varieties, 20 sorghum varieties, and 8 soybean varieties will be in trial plantings with identification for visitors. Iowa State College specialists will speak on crop variety selection and two fertilizer sessions titled Liquid versus Solid Fertilizer and Proper Placement of Starter Fertilizer. The program begins at 1 00 p.m. at the Carrington Clyde farm, four miles north of Independence on High 150.
The Democratic women of Butler County meet at the A B Mahnke home tomorrow afternoon September 19 at 2 o'clock to form a Butler County Democratic Women's Club and elect permanent officers.

Minneapolis duo Mr and Mrs Alan Pooley have a daughter Lynn Marie born September 14 at St. Mary's Hospital weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces. Cedar Valley Hospital births include DeOnn Rae Hildebrand born September 15 to Mr and Mrs Frederick Hildebrand. Greene native JoAnn Hess is the baby’s grandmother. Greene couple Mr and Mrs John Eggena greet a daughter born September 16 at Cedar Valley Hospital weighing 8 pounds 11 and 14 ounces. Rockwell couple Mr and Mrs Gerald McNamara announce Marilyn Jean born September 15 weighing 6 pounds 5 and 42 ounces. Clarksville pair Mr and Mrs Bert Kampman welcome Douglas Lee born September 16 weighing 8 pounds 12 and 1/2 ounces. Verl Doty and wife announce Russell Lew born September 14 at Cedar Valley Hospital weighing 8 pounds 1 and 3/4 ounces.
The final stag supper of the season is set for Tuesday evening September 24 at Round Grove Golf and Country Club. Tickets are available from Bob Mead Gene Majewski Harry Green Elmer Bramer Galen Miller Dr Wm Andrews Harry Downs Kline Sniffin Herman Stubbe and Dale Johnson.
Baptisms were performed during the worship service at the Presbyterian Church. David Nei, son of Mr and Mrs Neil Bolin of Clarksville, was baptized along with Bryan Dean, son of Mr and Mrs Dean Davis. Grandparents of Bryan are Mr and Mrs Charles Davis of Shell Rock and Mr and Mrs Vier E Sellers of Los Angeles California.
Stewardship school of instruction will be held in the Church of the Brethren in Waterloo for Brethren Churches members on the evenings of September 18 and 19 and at the Root River Church in Preston Minnesota on September 20 morning and afternoon.
Last Friday at about 6 30 p m near Greene a collision occurred on a county road three miles west and one mile south involving Leroy Miller and Iva Boller. Miller sustained facial injuries needing oral stitches. Boller had minor injuries.
Mr and Mrs Harry Green learned of the death of his aunt Mrs Elsie Kehrer of Des Moines Saturday. Funeral services were conducted at the Dahlkemper Funeral Home in Des Moines. Mrs Kehrer, formerly Elsie Butler of Greene, was sister of the late Mrs William Green.
