Thirty seven children enrolled in the Summer Reading Club at Greene Public Library. 30 recorded books read, totaling 294. Top readers in the primary division were Shirley Allan with 23, Lou Ann Lord with 19, and Ann Voigts with 18. Cheryl Brinkman led the intermediate group with 24, Patty Bachman had 20, and both Cheryl and Shirley will receive library rewards.

Chairman reports repayment of loans on 1958 crop corn reaching 249,758 bushels through July with 1,195,953 bushels total under the program. Nationally, 108 million bushels of 1959 wheat, mostly as loans, and 4 million barley 1.5 million oats plus near one million hundredweight of grain sorghums are under support through July. Of 381.4 million bushels of 1958 corn under support, loans repaid exceed 73 million bushels.
Harold Allan eighteen of Greene and Robert Worley seventeen of Aredale were hurt in a single vehicle crash on Highway 65 north of Rockwell at 2:30 am Saturday. The 1959 Chevrolet left the bridge abutment over Beaver Dam Creek and rolled down a steep bank. Both teens were found at 7:00 am by a passing motorist after darkness delayed discovery. Allan suffered a head injury and cuts while Worley had two broken ankles, a broken arm, and cuts. They were conscious upon discovery and admitted Allan slept at the wheel. Both were treated at Mercy Hospital in Mason City.

Sophomores choose Gordon Menken president Susan Roose vice president Pennny Wharton secretary Dallas Steere treasurer. Juniors pick Carol Crosby president Steven Rottler vice president Judy Spratt secretary Sally Townsley treasurer Rita Kepple Tom Green. Seniors select Linda Busse president Mike Mead vice president Maureen Allison secretary Linda Jackson treasurer Sally Bartels Mary Boller Dallas Foster Jerry Backer on student council. Gerald Stephenson Richard Wagoner named class sponsors.
A county meeting of the American Legion and Auxiliary is set for Parkersburg at the Legion Hall on Tuesday September 15 at 8 00 p m. Members are to gather for planning and coordination of post activities and community services.
Clark Wells of Buffalo Missouri died suddenly at his home Monday morning He was a former Greene resident and is survived by his wife one son Howard Wells and two grandchildren He was preceded by daughter Rosalyn Van Horn Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 00 p m at Clarksville with Hammel and Martin Funeral Home in charge of arrangements
The State Conservation Commission altered Iowa hunting dates to avoid University of Iowa football clashes. Pheasant opens November 14 and closes December 7 in northern counties. quail opens October 31, ends November 23 short season and December 14 long season, replacing the original November 7 plan in executive session.
A car driven by Mrs. Ralph Behnke was badly damaged Saturday afternoon east of Greene after attempting to pass a truck driven by Gary Slocum. Slocum turned left into a gravel pit near the Albert Barth farm without signaling. The truck had only minor scratches.
Sam Sneed and Erma Bartels won the two Ball Foursome at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Labor Day with a 43. The pair claimed the tournament cups for the next year, while Dell Curtis and Fern Stuntz took second place with 46. Paul Cheney, Don Bachman, and Charmayne Sneed won special hole prizes after a pot luck dinner and evening dance.
Walter Kemming and Patricia Morey had a minor collision in the alley behind Morey’s West Side Grocery on Sunday morning. The left front fenders of both autos were slightly damaged.
Marvin Krull of Hampton was arrested by Marshal Virgil Hites on Saturday and charged with a stop sign violation. He was fined $5 and $275 costs in Mayor Ceteil Starkweather's court.
Leigh Green, 59, passed away suddenly in a hospital in Central City on Thursday. He taught and coached in Greene Community School after moving from Charles City in 1954 where he worked as a safety engineer for the Oliver Corporation plant. Survivors include his wife, one daughter and a son. Burial services were held in Quincy, Illinois.
Earl Chapman arrived home Wednesday evening from the University hospital in Iowa City. Evonita Freeseman has returned from the Polio Ward of the Children’s Hospital of the University hospitals in Iowa City and will not enroll in high school for a few weeks.
Cub Scout troop to hold a cook-out next Saturday at the High School Athletic Field. All scouts must bring equipment and food for their dinner and be at 19 30 on Saturday morning.
Mrs Carl Reis 70 died suddenly Friday at her Charles City home from a heart attack. She was born in Van Meter and later lived in Greene before marrying Carl M. Reis on January 12, 1912. Surviving are her husband three daughters ten grandchildren three sisters and one brother. Funeral Mass held at Immaculate Conception Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
The Caullary Baptist Church hosts an annual Missionary Conference from Sunday September 18 to Sunday September 20 with a Round Robin format involving Faith Baptist Marble Rock Horton Waverly New Hartford Shell Rock. Greene welcomes Larry Finnell and his eight month old son Michael as the new manager of the R. M. Harrison Variety Store in Greene. Finnell transfers from Indianola where he aided a Harrison Store, succeeding Earl Goodenberger who led Greene’s Harrison for eleven years before moving to Iowa Falls with his family. The Finnell family lives at 121 South Main Street in Greene.
Postmaster Robert Curtis and Galen Martzahn of the Greene Post Office attended an area postal conference in Waterloo on September 3 1959. The meeting aimed to perfect a Central Iowa area plan for improved service to patrons with final details soon announced by James B Tunny regional operations director.
Lorraine Rott a Greene High School junior had an emergency appendix operation at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City on Sunday due to appendicitis.
Greene High School Rambler football opens the 1959 season with a non conference game at Reinbeck on Friday September 11 at 6 o clock. Home games include Cresco Nora Springs Homecoming N Central of Manly Rockford Dad s Night while away games feature Reinbeck Riceville St Ansgar Nashua and Ackley. The public is urged to support the squad.
The Hoofbeats club hosts its third annual horse show next Sunday at a Greene area site one mile south on Highway 14 and a half mile east, with rain date September 20. Events include parade of contestants, colors, amateur ponies, pole bending, musical chairs for children 15 and under, men and women western pleasure, junior horsemanship ages 18 and under and 13 to 18, clover leaf and stock horse, with midway performances and ribbons and trophies for junior horsemanship winners.
Mr. and Mrs. M. K. Sperry returned home Monday after a three weeks tour of the Western states. They visited Bad Lands, Yellowstone, Grand Coulee Dam and traveled the Redwood Highway to San Francisco. They called on their sons Mir and Willis Sperry in Palo Alto and Mr. and Mrs. Sperry in Turlock, Calif., and Mrs. Sperry's sister and husband, Mr. and Mrs. C Hall, in Mountain View.
Mr and Mrs Ben Beal and children Linda Carole and Kenneth left for Palm Desert California on Friday after two weeks at the home of Mr Beal's parents Ralph Beal and Faith. Ben Beal runs a date and grape ranch in Indio California.
The Greene Women's Club begins its new year with a 1:00 p.m. lunch meeting at Club Iowa on Tuesday September 15. The program themed Other Lands and Other People features slides on Iraq and a Civil Defense feature. Mrs. Mead Mrs. Allison and Mrs. Stuntz lead arrangements and invite all women to attend with rides provided.
Mr and Mrs Chales Merk of Marble Rock welcomed a daughter at Cedar Valleys Hospital weighing six pounds on September 5. The birth adds a new member to the Merk family.
At Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City George W. Johnson remains under going treatment. Mrs Ed Hanley was admitted yesterday morning to Cedar Valley Hospital for examinations and treatment, with ongoing care planned.
A large turnout attended the football clinic at the athletic field Monday night. Coach Cecil Rhoads demonstrated equipment use for protection and cost, followed by a twoquarter scrimmage to highlight squad strengths and weaknesses. Grendler, Nelson, Backer, and Rottler impressed in backfield and line play as the defense showed speed and conditioning despite some pass defense lapses. The squad faces Reinbeck on Friday and Cresco at home on September 18 in non conference games.

Buses depart Allison at 5:45 AM, Y south of Clarksville at 6:00 AM, and Shell Rock at 6:15 AM. Reservations due by September 17 at the Alliance Farm Bureau Office in Algon.
Bradley Schebecker ten month old son of Mr and Mrs Ray Scheidecker Greene fell from a high chair last week and broke his collar bone.

Dr and Mrs Stanley N Graven of Town City welcome a son born on Thursday September. The baby is named Michael Alvin. He is the grandson of Judge and Mrs Henry Graven of Greene.
