The Dougherty Saddle Club sponsors a horse show at the fairgrounds in Allison next Sunday September 12 at 1:00 PM. Sixteen events are planned and the club queen will be announced during the show.
Final plans for the Soil Conservation Field Day on Thursday September 16 have been announced by Kay Connelly County Extension Director. The event on the Harry Wilder farm one mile east of Allison on Highway No 3 runs from 9 00 a m to 4 00 p m with the plowing contest at 2 00 p m. Representatives of SCS ASCS and Extension will explain soil conservation practices and answer questions. Plenty of parking and a lunch stand will be available. Everyone is invited to attend any time during the day.
Relatives and friends from out of town attended funeral services for Merle Heckman on Tuesday afternoon. Among them were Major James F. Heckman of Chamberly Air Force Base France and couples from Lanark Fondu Lac Minneapolis Dumont Norwalk Rochester Charles City Manchester and nearby communities.
The Greene High School senior class sponsors a dance in the school auditorium on Saturday evening September 11 from 8:00 to 11:30. Teachers Mr Petter Mr Westerman and Mr Holtz sponsor. A freshman king and queen will be crowned.
Merle B Heckman born September 21 1893 in Marion Pennsylvania died Friday September 3 in Greene. Married Alma Rue August 2 1923 in Greene. Survived by wife son Major Heckman and four grandchildren. Funeral September 7 at 1 30 p m Methodist Church with Rev Wayne Gjerde. burial Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors.
The regular monthly Greene Commercial Club meeting is set for Wednesday evening September 8 at 7 30 p m at the Youth Center. Attendees will plan winter promotions and other activities.
A son was born to Mr and Mrs Bernard Schrage of Waverly on August 21 at Mercy Hospital Waverly. The infant weighed 8 pounds 114% ounces and was named Warne Fugene. The mother is Marlys Landers daughter of Otto Landers of Greene. Conrad Schrage of Waverly is the infant's other grandfather.
Mr and Mrs Mont Clifton attended funeral services for Mr and Mrs Aaron R Bowman at Clarion on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Clifton formerly taught with Mr Bowman at Whiting. The Bowmans were killed in a train car accident.
The Greene Junior Chamber of Commerce held its final 1965 meeting confirming officers for the 1965 66 term: Dr R H Jaspers president Levi Ackart vice president Norman Graven secretary Dean Drakle treasurer Gary Smith state director, Jim Menken and Gordon Menken board members.
Hunting opens Saturday with rabbits squirrels and teal legal. over 17 000 permit holders expected at sunrise. Teal season runs to September 19 with four daily bag and eight possession limits. teal require permits and federal stamp. Squirrel season through January 2 1966 with six daily bag and 12 possession. Rabbit season through February 20 1956 with ten daily bag and no possession limit. Shooting 6 am to 6 pm. be sure before you shoot.
Mrs Will Cheney is a patient at St Josephs Verey Hospital in Mason City undergoing surgery on Wednesday September 1st.
The Greene Community School District board election is set for next Monday September 13 with a 12 00 noon to 7 00 pm voting window in the high school auditorium. From Dayton Township two candidates duel for the seat while Coldwater Township has one nominee and voting is open to all district residents meeting state eligibility.
The St. John's United Church of Christ east of Greene hosts a church supper Thursday evening with serving starting at 4 30 pm and a busy Wednesday night bowling league showing high scores by Jorn Stock Bill Nordreser and Jack Whitehead. Mrs Leo Holzschuh of Wishram Washington is a patient at The Dalles General Hospital Oregon. She underwent amputation of her foot on August 30. She is the former Anne Stuntz of Greene.
Calvary Baptist Church Greene hosts the 22nd Round Robin Missionary Conference from September 12 to 19 with seven Regular Baptist Churches and seven missionaries in each service. The lineup features Rev Dynes McCullough Brazil, Rev Clair Saliers Grand Rapids Bible College, Miss Margaret Rock Chile, Rev Ludwig Zerbe, Rev David H Kepple Niger West Africa, Miss Donna Ahlgrim Pakistan, and Rev Warren A Pals Munich Germany. Services are 11 a.m. Sundays and 7 45 p.m. evenings. public invitation extended.
The National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo runs October 2 to 11 featuring two new exhibits the American Indian Village and the Norwegian American Museum Each offers visual depictions of pioneer heritage with live dances canoe building totem carving and crafts The Indian Village includes Chief John Big Tree and De Wa Senta with a 60 by 120 foot enclosure between Estel Hall and the Garden and Flower Show Build The Norwegian American Museum comes from Luther College Decorah and is noted by Prof A W Schlesinger Sr Harvard as among the three most interesting showcases in America.
The Greene Fire Department responded to a 3 30 a m alarm at Ralph MacDonald farm in Powersville. A large barn and 17 cows along with calves milking equipment and a small amount of hay were destroyed. Cause unknown.
Stockholders of the Butler Grundy Farm Service Company of Alison will hold a special meeting at the Farm Bureau building in Alison on Wednesday September 15 at 8 o clock p.m. The purpose is to consider amendments to the Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws and for other business as may come before the meeting.
Greene Ramblers travel to Osage Friday night for their opening football game of 1965. Osage counters with returning lettermen and a big frontline, while Greene relies on speed and potential in the backfield. The tentative Ramblers lineup features Hagarty, Barth, Ramker, and Weichers or Dralle at key back positions.
The Tall Paul Reading Club sponsored by the Library ended last week with 66 children enrolled and 1,187 books read. Scott Hildebrand led the primary division with 168 books, Jolene Johnson topped the elementary group with 353, and Otto Tjaden placed third with 31. Charts can be picked up at the library, and fall Story Hour will resume with more details to follow.
Mrs Alice McEwen is at the Salsbury Baptist Home in Charles City where she was taken last week.
Mr and Mrs Bill Lautenbach of Littleton Colorado announce the birth of a son on August 24. The infant weighed 7 pounds 9 ounces and is named Frederick William III Rick. Mrs Lautenbach is the former Connie Olson who taught in Greene.
Paul Cheney filed nom papers with the school board secretary and announced candidacy for the Dayton Township vacancy. He and his wife are members of First Presbyterian Church in Greene where Paul is an elder and former trustee. He served eight years on boards of the Farmer's Cooperative Elevator and the Farmer's Cooperative Creamery and pursues all educational program aspects.
Steve Clapham is back at home after surgery on his right ear at St Josephs Mercy Hospital Mason City performed August 24.
A 7 pound catfish measured 25 inches was caught last Thursday evening at Camp Comfort by Edward Schmadeke of ksville during a fishing outing.
Mr and Mrs Lyle Bachman visited at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Lee Bachman last week after completing Peace Corps training at San Jose State College They then visited Mrs Lyle Bachmans parents Mr and Mrs Vern Rounds in Onawa On Monday they flew from Sioux City to San Francisco en route to the Philippines to teach English science and music in the Peace Corps.
Congressman H R Gross is accepting applications from young men in the Third Iowa District for competitive appointments to the Air Force Naval and Merchant Marine academies for 1966. Deadline October 1. One Air Force vacancy and two Naval slots. Apply in writing with full name parents and date of birth to Room 2368 Barbura House Office Building Washington. All appointments are strictly competitive and begin with a civil service screening on November 6.
The Town 4-H Dairy Heifer Show moves to the second Saturday of the fair. Congress runs Saturday October 2 to Sunday October 10. A 4-H Achievement Parade is planned for October 9 at 7 p.m. in the Hippodrome, with exhibitors invited to the rodeo that night. Heifers arrive October 8 at 6 a.m. and must be in stalls by noon that day.
Dale Cain of Shell Rock faced a charge of entering a through highway without stopping. He paid a $10.00 fine and $4.00 costs in the matter.
