Editor urges Greene voters to back local board candidates

The Editor urges Greene area residents to vote in the November 6 election for the Butler County Board of Supervisors. Paul Schaeffer is not seeking re election. Republican Cecil W. Starkweather and Democrat Marvin Bruns are Greene area candidates, with Independent I H Ainslie also running. Each candidate is described as qualified and deserving of votes from all political sides as the public is urged to exercise the voting privilege.

Foreign Student Guest At Local School Visit

John Ogike of Nigeria, Africa, a State College of Iowa junior majoring in social studies, spoke on customs in Nigeria and Nigerian government at Greene Community School on Monday. He toured Miss Nancy Mitchells classes and stayed overnight with Rev. and Mrs. Harold Miller before returning to Cedar Falls Monday evening.

Local Extension Elections Set for November Dates

Three Township Extension elections in Greene County will be held soon according to Kay Connelly. Caldwater Township votes Thursday November 1 at 8:00 p.m. in the Youth Center. Bennedette votes Tuesday November 6 at 7:30 p.m. in the Aredale Methodist Church. Fremont votes Wednesday November 7 at 8:00 p.m. in the Bienemann School. Each meeting is a family night with 4-H programs, staff presentation, refreshments, and an Extension Council vote for a two year term.

Time Change For Adult Art Class This Week

The adult art class will begin at 8:00 p.m. this evening, Wednesday, and will not be held next Wednesday, November 7, due to the football game with Ackley.

Mr and Mrs Dean Cole are proud parents of Becky Jean Cole born at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City on October 18. The newborn weighed 7 pounds 3 4 ounces and joins the Cole family.

Begin Adult Class In Industrial Arts

Adult classes of industrial arts will start Tuesday evening, November 6, at 7:00 o'clock in the industrial arts shop by the athletic field. Robert Tornowske will instruct the class which will include woodworking, metal working and auto mechanics. A five dollar fee will be charged for the course.

Commercial Club To Hold Meeting

The Greene Commercial Club will hold a quarterly meeting and supper on Wednesday evening November 14 at the Elementary School Auditorium. Supper will be served at 6 30 p m. The wives of the businessmen are invited. Committee in charge includes Charles Ray Bob Mead Wilford Griner Dr J T Truitt and Charles Lusher. Election of officers will be held. all members urged to attend.

Cancer Quota Exceeded In Butler County Iowa 1962

Butler County was among 48 Iowa counties exceeding their cancer crusade quota in 1962. Mrs Andrew Reid of Greene received a plaque from the American Cancer Society. The state meeting at Hotel Savery in Des Moines noted twenty five years of cancer control progress. Mrs Kenneth Shear led the ACS booth at the county fair. 313 attended and received literature. Book winners were Mary Hatlestad Allison Mrs Paul Rosenwinkle Clarksville and Shirley De Vries Kesley.

Deer Hunters Must Hold Two Licenses

The State Conservation Commission reminds hunters that deer hunters must carry both the special deer hunting license and a regular small game hunting license. Inquiries prompted a legal check, and the law requires both licenses when in the field after deer.

The Greene Rambler football team overwhelmed Rockford 35 to 6 at home to clinch the Corn Bowl Conference title. Greene led 7 0 after the opening drive and stretched the margin to 28 0 by halftime before Rockford finally scored on a fourth quarter drive, with Greene answering threats and extending its conference supremacy.

Former Druggist Stabbed In Hold-up Attempt

John Debner a 64 year old former druggist in Greene was stabbed during a hold up at his drug store at 515 E 5th St Waterloo shortly before noon on Friday. He was admitted to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo where surgery was performed Friday evening. Waterloo police are checking accounts of several witnesses who may have seen the young man being sought. Debner was stabbed once in the abdomen.

Ramblers To be Honored At Banquet

The local Quarterback Club will host the 1962 Rambler football team at a smorgasbord banquet at Club Iowa in Charles City on Monday evening November 12. All squad parents and Quarterback Club members invited. Cost is $2 per person at Club Iowa. Bud Suter of the University of Iowa will be the main speaker. Attend-affiliates should notify Aaron Jewell or Jack Sandy by phone.

Mantoux tuberculosis test to begin in Butler county

Parents must sign a consent letter for their child to receive the Mantoux skin test starting November 5 for Allison-Bristow and other district schools. The free test aims to detect tuberculosis with nearly 100 percent accuracy and will be given to students and school staff across multiple sites from November 5 through November 14.

Greene High School Musicians Named to All State Bands and Orchestra

Three Greene High School musicians and one former Greene student were selected for All-State ensembles after Cedar Falls tryouts. Sara Green earns All-State Orchestra for the fourth year, Martha Stuntz makes All-State Orchestra flutists, Helen McBurney is among six baritone sax players in All-State Band, and Charlene Young is one of twelve saxophonists in All-State Band. They rehearse at home, then audition for chairs in Des Moines during Thanksgiving, with final concert at KRNT Theatre on November 24 taped for TV and radio. Tickets: KRNT Theatre Des Moines.
