Voter interest appears mixed with strong absentee demand in Floyd and Butler counties ahead of Tuesday's elections. Candidates span major parties with Grassley R facing Rapp D in the 3rd District and several state and local offices headed by unopposed GOP incumbents in Butler County including Auditor Parker Schmitz and Clerk Walter Wilhelm.

The 1976 Hobby Fair sponsored by Butler County Farm Bureau Women will be held on Wednesday November 3 in the basement of the Farm Bureau building in Allison. Public viewing runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch will be available. Many displays promise Christmas shopping ideas. The event moves to the new Farm Bureau building three blocks north from last year.
Peggy Steere and Debra Schroeder of Greene High School earned 1976 All-State Band roles after district tryouts at Fort Dodge. Steere, clarinet. Schroeder, alto clarinet, join 285-piece ensemble. Rehearsals in Des Moines and Ames lead to a Hilton Coliseum concert on Nov 20 1976, with tickets sold through Iowa State Center.
Kappa Jota hosts a Halloween Haunted House at Jaycee Hall with a sneak preview Thursday Oct. 28 from 8 to 9 pm. The spectacle promises chills from gargoyles to a from deep cavern apparition linked to Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. Open Oct 30 6:30 to 10 pm and Oct 31 6:30 to 10 pm with child-friendly guidance and 50 cents per person notation error clarified.
Mrs. Rose V Mennenga Smith 79 died at home from cancer. Services were Monday Oct 25 at Brandt Fritz Funeral Home Ackley with burial in Washington Reformed Church Cemetery. Surviving: 3 sons Henry Harold both of Aurora Illinois and Raymond of Fort Dodge. 6 daughters Ethel Newby Eldora Fay Parish North Aurora Curtis Seberson Nevada Ia Dorothy Bohlman Ackley Doris Windecha Hubbard Ia Grace Lichtel North Aurora Il. 2 brothers Herman Mennenga Bradford Elmer Mennenga Greene. 33 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Preceded by husband Roy and parents and siblings. Also Bicentennial Commission and Elettors Committee meetings noted in Allison.
Greene High School drama director Wayne O Brien leads a troupe in the final polish for the fall play The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. Opening Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6, at the old Greene High gym, the farce features witty dialogue, improbable coincidences, and a cast of students and stage crew.
NBC News selects Coldwater Township precinct 10 Be as a national sample for the 1976 presidential election. Twenty voters will be interviewed on election day ten in the morning and ten in the evening. Each nth voter fills a confidential questionnaire of thirty questions, including voting choice and views. Interviewers are Sylvia Hawker and Fred Hawker.
