The editor warns Greene's water system remains a concern though tests pass, blaming long use pipes and suggesting council will pick an economical fix or a necessary program. Friday’s Ramblers vs Rockford Warriors game could decide first place as Rockford must win to stay in contention.
Greene Community School announces two students Bruce Nettleton and Anne Voigts named as commended for high performance on the 1967 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. They rank among about 40,000 upper 2 percent of US high school seniors in 1968. recent semifinalists numbered 14,000.
Sandra Stanton daughter of Mr and Mrs Roger Stanton returned home Friday from Floyd County Memorial Hospital where she underwent a tonsilectomy on Thursday.
A cattle truck carrying 70 cattle overturned near the Arvid Lindell farm southwest of Greene at 4:00 a.m., trapping cattle and causing deaths and injuries. A Greene Community School bus with 48 passengers lost a front wheel at 8:15 a.m. near Mrs. Albert Steere farm, injuring a few children and the driver. Butler County Sheriff’s Office investigated both incidents.
The 1968 Agricultural Conservation Program funds total 50000 for Butler County with about 325 farms benefiting nationwide 1 000 000 farmers assisted. Secretary Freeman announced 1968 national allocation 209 730 000 amid emphasis on living space recreation water landscape and conservation practices for family farms low income operators and multipurpose resource use.
New resident Mr and Mrs Richard Booth welcome a son born Monday October 28 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital Mason City the infant weighing 7 pounds 1 ounce is named Bryant Timothy. He is welcomed home by brother Michael Richard. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Harold Schoenfeld Greene and Mrs Leona Booth Denver Colorado.
Science students from Butler County schools visited the radar base in Waverly on Tuesday night October 24. Sixteen students from Greene County traveled, along with Allison and Parkersburg pupils.
The First Lutheran Church of Greene hosts a 7:00 p.m. screening of the film Martin Luther to mark the 450th anniversary of the Reformation. A joint event by First Presbyterian and St. Peter's Lutheran Churches features a historical, fair portrayal with a Q A period and no charge.

Aboard Constellation Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class John J. Murphy completed a 33 day on the line period off North Vietnam aboard the attack carrier. This followed a 36 day Tonkin Gulf tour as Constellation replaced the fire damaged USS Forrestal. Pilots targeted Lang Son Bridge and air strikes destroyed 115 barges, 67 trucks, three patrol boats and 18 bridges near Haiphong.
Three local Boy Scouts Lester Williamson Bone and Charles Chuck Bone received Eagle ranks at a packed Court of Honor held in the Elementary School auditorium. Morris Wash of the Winnebago Council led the ceremony with Mrs Bone and Mrs Lester pinning badges as family members aided the ceremony.
Ellis Bammann is homeward bound after a three week stay at St Marys Hospital in Rochester Minnesota. He was discharged on Saturday and is recovering at home.
Highway 14 at Greene's north edge opens to traffic after paving and shoulder work. Crews completed paving last week and have been pushing dirt along the road edge. Some shoulder work remains and side roads have paving, but need dirt fill.
Mr and Mrs Harlan Martzahn welcomed a son on Friday October 20 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital Waverly The newborn weighed 7 pounds 2 ounces and was named Daniel Duane A brother Mike age 2 welcomed him home Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Wilbur Martzahn Greene and Mr and Mrs Lloyd Trimbell Cedar Falls
Mrs. Irene Harris Foutz 54 of Marble Rock died at home after a lingering illness. Born June 28 1913 in Greene she married Robert Foutz and taught in Marble Rock schools. Survivors include her husband a daughter Rosanna and four Harris brothers. Services Wednesday at 2 PM at Marble Rock Methodist Church. Burial Hillside Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
Greene and Marble Rock fire crews responded to a corn field fire at the Dean Ott farm northwest of Greene shortly after 1 PM Monday. Officials believe sparks from burned husks started the blaze, consuming several acres before being controlled.
The Census of Agriculture shows NIAD farms average sales in 1964 at 17 519 dollars versus 10 572 a decade earlier, a 66 percent rise. NIAD farm numbers fell 20 percent 1954 to 1964 while total NIAD farm product sales climbed to 196 million dollars, up 33 percent. Town records show a 15 thousand dollar expense gap between 2 240 acre and 1 600 acre farms.
Earl Rague, 57, died suddenly about 7:30 Tuesday at his Greene home. Funeral arrangements are pending with Reid's Funeral Chapel. Surviving are his wife, three sons Eugene and Roger of Mason City, Donald of Charles City, a daughter Mrs. Robert Eloise O'Brien of Greene.

North Iowa Area Community College invites Greene residents to an open house in the Memorial Building Mason City on Sunday October 29 from 2 to 4 pm. Staff and students will be present to answer questions and refreshments will be served.
The Greene community will hold a Halloween parade on Tuesday October 31 for pre schoolers and students up to eighth grade. Participants meet at 7 30 p m at Perrin Park tennis court. Prizes of 3 00 2 00 and 1 00 will be awarded in each division. The event is sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Greene Commercial Club.
Cadet Scouts of troop 265 will conduct a UNICEF fundraising trick or treat drive on Monday October 30. The effort supports child welfare programs and UNICEF aid in supplies equipment and staff training. Scouts meet at the Community Center at 4:00 p m and will be provided containers.

The 1966 fall total was exceeded by 904, marking the eighth straight enrollment record.
