Local attorney John Van Eschen urges third district Democrats to pursue prominent party roles, praising vigorous leadership. Meanwhile, Nashua hosts Rockford in a hard hitting football clash ending 17 to 6 for Nashua, as Ramblers eye Friday trip to Rockford and a November 1 home showdown.
Carlotta Sinnett of Mason City has become director of the North Central Division of Iowa Heart Association. Dr. Luke Chang announced the appointment and said the North Central Division fall Board meeting will be Oct 24 at Wilke's in Clear Lake with guests Dr. M. B. Lawrence and Evan Hultman. Hultman will award top fund raising honors. ten top counties in per capita gifts are in the North Central area. county chairs include Senator Vernon H. Kyhl of Parkersburg and Butler County.
Mrs Ruth Haugenburg is at St Josephs Mercy Hospital Mason City undergoing surgery and traction for injuries from a car accident. She is expected to remain there for a couple of months.
The Cub Scout Pack hosts a Halloween party on Wednesday October 30 at 7 30 p m in the elementary school. All boys may attend in costume and parents are invited. Boys aged 8 to 10 curious about joining Cubs may come with a parent.
Iowa geologists Harrell Strimple and Donald Koch, aided by Greene Limestone Company, unearthed cystoids and related fossils in a wall of Williams Quarry near Nora Springs. The specimens from the Upper Devonian Sea reveal heads on pinecone shaped stalked forms attached to limestone knobs. Researchers display several fossils at the University of Iowa geology department as they continue digging for Adocetocystis williamsi and more clues about ancient North Central Iowa seaways.
Butler County REC in Allison and 54 Iowa electric cooperatives have refunded more than 16 million dollars to over 132000 member owners since the 1930s. The Butler County REC has paid back 639121.66 to date through 1953 with 165285.21 refunded in 1968 and 86299.76 in 1967.
Iowa State University extension announces two management courses to begin in November at Charles City and Forest City high schools. Management by Objectives runs eight Thursdays from November 14, 7 to 9 pm, taught by Harry Theile at Charles City High School. Conference Leadership runs seven or eight Tuesdays starting November 12 in Forest City High School, taught by Roy Park. Enrollment through the Mason City area office or county extension offices.
Mr and Mrs Vernon Larsen of Allison were honored at a Des Moines reception on Thursday October 10 as the Association of County Officers held its school of instruction. Larsen, former president, received a plaque for his year of service. About 150 guests attended with family present.

St Ansgar outscored Greene 7-0 in the first quarter and 6-0 in the second, finishing with a 19-6 victory. Greene, led by Dick Stuntz with 165 rushing yards on 15 carries, battled but were halted twice inside the 20, while St Ansgar built 280 yards to Greene’s 240.
Butler County Republican Women sponsor a meeting Tuesday October 29 at 7 30 p m at City Hall Al lison. Charles Grassley of New Hartford will explain the five proposed Iowa constitutional amendments to be voted on November 5. Norman Graven of Greene moderates. Vernon H Kyhl of Parkersburg will share views. Coffee and cookies afterward.
Pulitzer winner Frank Miller of the Des Moines Register will appear at a Political Fun Night Monday October 28 at 8:00 PM. The event at Sahara Club on Hwy 65 near Sheffield supports Greene Attorney John Van Eschen’s congressional bid. No speech is planned. admission is 4 dollars per person and meals are not served.
Greene Jaycees plan to mail Christmas cards to local service members but need addresses. Interested residents should contact Bruce Marsh or Roger Martzahn to provide addresses promptly.
Funeral services for Mrs Roy Martzahn will be held Thursday October 24 at 2 p.m. in St Peter's Lutheran Church Greene with Rev Paul Metzger officiating. Jeanette Elizabeth Menken born August 6 1907 in Ackley Iowa died October 21 in St Joseph’s Mercy Hospital Waverly after an extended illness. Survivors include her husband Roy of Greene a son Roger five brothers eight sisters and five grandchildren. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel handles arrangements.
An infant son was born Monday October 21 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital in Waverly weighing 9 pounds 1 ounce. At home awaiting his arrival are siblings Lisa and Lynette. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Paul Wunsch and Mr and Mrs Donald Reed.
A Harvest Fair with hobbies and crafts is scheduled for Monday November 4 1968 at the 4-H building fairgrounds west of Charles City. The event runs from 1 00 p m to 9 00 p m and is sponsored by the Floyd County Farm Bureau Women. Public attendance is welcome.
Greene community drama department presents Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with psychedelic lighting and modern staging. Director Arlan W. Rahlf trims length by a third and shifts to three plots with three sets of lead characters. Performances run October 24 25 at Mason City MACC Auditorium and October 26 at Charles City Junior High Auditorium, all at 3:00.
Marine Private Harold W. Edg ington, 21, son of Mrs. Orin Shreckengost of Dougherty, graduated from eight weeks of recruit training at the San Diego depot. He will undergo two to four weeks of individual combat training, then leave home before reporting to his first Marine assignment. The program emphasizes physical conditioning, survival skills, marksmanship with M 14 rifle and .45 pistol, close order drill, basic military subjects, hygiene and first aid, customs and mission of the Marine Corps.
Greene Ramblers defeat St Ansgar Saints 33 to 0 in a conference game, led by Jim Shultz and Stan Pyatt. The win keeps Greene atop the standings and sets up a Friday road game at Rockford at 7 45 pm.
Cadette Girl Scouts of Greene plan Trick or Treat for UNICEF on October 26 joining millions of children who participate yearly. Scouts will carry orange and black cartons. coins only accepted from identified children. Senior Scouts serve lunch prior to the drive with National Safety Council endorsement.
The National Farmers Organization hosts a Farm Policy meeting at the Labor Center in Charles City on Monday October 28 at 8 00 p m Open to the public the forum will invite Governor Harold Hughes David Stanley H R Gross and John Van Eschen Greene Attorney Each candidate will have equal speaking time on agricultural issues followed by a Q A session
The Greene Girl Scouts Nut Sale runs Friday October 25 through Saturday November 2. They offer fancy salted nuts, dry roasted peanuts and peanut crunch candy at $1 per box. Troop earns ten cents per box. Junior and Cadette Scouts participate. Betty Markle chairs the sale.
