Mr and Mrs Darwin Stock announce the birth of a daughter Shelley Ann on October 15 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City. She weighed five pounds seven ounces at birth. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Howard Hansen Denver Colorado and Mr and Mrs Lester Stock Greene. Great grandparents are Mr and Mrs H H Miller Greene.
Savings bonds and Freedom Shares in Butler county reach $42,985 in September, with a nine month total of $333,920 toward 70 percent of the 1969 quota. Emmet and Ringgold counties tie for top at 91 percent. statewide nine month sales total $55,945,982, or 66 percent of the goal. Other counties show Floyd at 69 percent, Bremer 64 percent, Black Hawk 62 percent, and Franklin 51 percent.

Elnora McDonald, a former Greene area resident, died October 8 in Rosemead California. Born May 19 1883 near Greene she taught in local schools for years. Survivors include two sisters nieces nephews and great nieces and nephews. Her husband Will McDonald and her parents preceded her in death along with a twin sister.
Mrs. Wilford Griner underwent major surgery October 14 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City and returned home October 20. Wilbur Martzahn came home October 17 from St. Marys Hospital Rochester after surgery October 3. Mrs. Herman Wolf, after a stroke and transfer to Chatauqua Rest Home, returned home October 11.
Vietnam Army Specialist Five Stephan D. Boyle, son of Mr and Mrs Patrick A Boyle of Dougherty, received the Bronze Star Medal September 18 in Vietnam. He earned it as a platoon sergeant in Company C 2nd Battalion 501st Infantry 01st Airborne Division. He was promoted at the ceremony and received the Army Commendation Medal for meritorious service in Vietnam.
Interstate Power Company is mailing a survey to all customers to gauge opinions on service, employees, and value. It marks their eleventh such survey in 27 years, and officials say frank replies help correct complaints. Responses to be returned in prepaid envelopes to local district offices.
Iowa quail and duck seasons begin October 25. Quail run to January 31, 1970, with 8 per day and 16 in possession. Duck season runs October 25 to November 23, with 4 daily and specific limits for mallards wood ducks canvasbacks redheads hooded mergansers and coots. hours vary by species. Coots mirror duck hours but allow 10 daily and 20 possession. Southern Iowa has higher quail populations near brush patches and grain fields.
Joanne Senne daughter of Mr and Mrs Martin Senne has a poem chosen for the 1969 Lyrical Iowa edition published by the Iowa Poetry Association. Her piece Americas Just a Country was written as a sixth grade student. The judge was Margaret Wolff Garland Wartburg College Waverly.
Dan Wegand, son of Mr and Mrs Max Wegand and 1969 Greene High School graduate, centers for Waldorf College’s football team which has opened the season 5-0, outscoring opponents 112 to 0. Waldorf ranked 6th in the junior college poll, an independent two year school with an eight game schedule. They beat Pillsbury College 20-0 on Homecoming October 11, and prior wins included Willmar 13-0 North Hennepin 13-0 Town Lakes 33-0 and Concordia 33-0. The Warriors boast a balanced attack with 673 rushing and 519 passing yards, improving passing to 16, 89, 133, 184, and 97 yards in five games. Defensively they’ve held foes scoreless, with eight interceptions ten fumbles recovered and four punts blocked. They have scored two touchdowns on returns and helped set up seven of the team’s 15 TDs.
Local teachers will attend the Iowa State Teachers Education Association Convention in Des Moines this Friday October 24. There will be no school at the elementary or high school buildings.

The Greene Community School cheerleaders sponsor a chili supper after the Friday football game on October 24 at the high school cafeteria. Tickets are sold by the squad or at the game gate. Proceeds fund outfits and other cheer expenses.
The Cub Scout Pack will meet Wednesday evening October 23 at 7 30 PM in the elementary school. All Cubs should wear a Halloween costume. They will be judged and prizes awarded.

Harmon of the IRS Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms said the Gun Control Act of 1968 aids federal, state, and local law enforcement in fighting crime and violence and does not aim to hinder hunters and sportsmen. He noted hunters can buy ammo in any state and carry firearms across borders if not felons or indicted, and that lost or stolen rifles or shotguns can be replaced with an affidavit and dealer records.

The Greene Jaycees and Commercial Club sponsor the annual costume parade and judging contest for pre school through 8th grade. Participants meet at the tennis court for judging at 7 30 p m then parade to main street where winners are announced and 24 in prize money distributed.

The St Ansgar Saints upset Greene 12 to 6 to briefly derail the Ramblers title bid. Greene fumbled at the Rambler 1 and St Ansgar capitalized on turnovers and strong defense to take a 12 to 6 lead, with Pope and Wageman leading the Saints and Stuntz, Debner, Shultz, and Lester sparking Greene’s offense and special teams.
Parents Mr and Mrs Harry Kampman welcomed a baby boy Tuesday afternoon October 21 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital Waverly. He weighed seven pounds six ounces. No name was chosen yet. The Greene Ramblerettes topped the girls cross country standings at West Union last Saturday and will run in the state finals in Adel on October 23. Coach James Roth notes steady improvement from his runners with Diane Miller placing third in 9:58 and Patti Rutz fourth in 9:59, while Connie Wihli did not compete. The team’s scoring and qualifiers include Miller and Rutz, with other placers listed from Plainfield, North, and Star Mount.
