Dorothy Mehlan Attends Iowa Mathematics Conference

Mrs. Dorothy Mehlan of Greene joined 120 Iowa secondary and college math teachers at the 35th Annual Conference for Teachers of Mathematics held October 15 at the University of Iowa. The one day meeting, with national trends in math education, was in cooperation with the Town section of the Mathematical Association of America and sponsored by UI divisions. Mrs. Mehlan teaches at Rockford.

Richard Timmer of Moline Illinois, a former Waverly resident, is among 177 Illinois men and women awarded CPA certificates at the Illinois Society of CPAs dinner in Chicago. He graduated Wartburg College, is married to Marie Wilkins, has a two year old son, and works as a supervisor at Golden Kutsunis and Hoover in Rock Island.

Senior Class Play Cast Announced at Local School

The Senior class fall comedy Charley's Aunt features Jim Drakle as Stephen Spettigue and Lor ettee Litterer as Amy Spettigue. Cheryl Brinkman plays Kitty Verdun with Gordon Sneed and Jerry Fisher in supporting roles as Babberly and Sir Francis Chensey. Rites Held for Fred Strickler 76 in Storm Lake

Fred Strickler 76 of Storm Lake a former Greene resident died in Buena Vista County Hospital. He married Nina Kahuda on July 5 1917. He worked at Evans Blumer and Company Greene then ran a Storm Lake business and served eight years on the city council. Survived by wife three sisters and predeceased by a brother and four sisters. Funeral at Lakeside Presbyterian Church Storm Lake with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery Greene.

Community Schools To Close Friday For Teachers Convention

The Greene Community Schools will be closed on Friday as teachers attend the State Teachers Convention in Des Moines. Pupils in all grades will be dismissed around 3:00 PM Thursday, with buses taking them home shortly after. classes resume Monday.

Butler County Public Assistance Expenditures Report

Expenditures from public assistance funds in Iowa rose to 5 491 450 for September, with Butler County total at 33 571. Aid to Dependent Children led disbursements with 7 511 to 49 cases, while 86 Old Age recipients got 19 271 and 41 Medical Aid to the Aged received 4 126. Aid to Disabled saw medical care added after an increased AD appropriation and 17 recipients received 1 610.

Navy Enlisted Man Killed in Formosa Traffic Crash

Robert K. Morgan, 19, of Greene, a technician third class in the Navy, died after a motorcycle collision in Taipei Formosa on Friday October 15. He was hit by a weapons carrier when his motorcycle tangled with a three wheeled cart while attached to the U S Headquarters Support Activity in Taipei. Survivors include his mother Mrs Nellie Morgan of Florida and a sister Mrs Lee Shook of Junction City Kansas.

4 H Awards Night Set For November 6

Butler County 4 H plans a November 6 8 00 p m awards night in the Farm Bureau Auditorium. Two older 4 H members will receive the 4 H Achievement trophies funded by the Butler County 4 H Trust Fund. Chicago Trip Award winners will be announced along with dairy and home furnishings honors and membership certificates.

Civil Defense Director to Serve Butler and Bremer Counties

Henry Behrends Jr. of Clarksville to serve as Civil Defense director for both Butler and Bremer Counties. One director will manage joint programs with 31 percent federal funding and the rest split by population. Behrends will work two days weekly in each county, tentatively Mondays and Wednesdays in Butler.

Mrs. Lillian Downs aged 89 died Saturday at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital after one week as patient. She born June 7 1876 in Greene daughter of Martin and Adaline Wise married Sherman W. Downs May 28 1893. New Fire Truck Delivers Test Run After False Alarm

A newly delivered fire apparatus from Greene's Apparatus Company arrived for a test run in Vicrohalltown. The $14,000 Ford-powered truck features a 2500 gpm pump, 1000 gallon tank, and two hour run capability at 150 pph. Mayor William J. Bamker and Fire Chief Lowell Maxson attended the test, which followed a false alarm triggered by an automatic ice alarm.

Boy Scouts to Hold Camporee

The Butler District camporee will take place this weekend at the campsite three miles south of the junction of Highways 3 and 14.
