Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Stock move their bowling alley from South First Street Greene to a new six lane facility north of Greene on Highway 14. The new structure includes a lunch counter and hospitality room and regular bowling leagues resume next Monday.
Pete Timmer former Greene High School science teacher was seriously hurt near Clarksville when a hay rope broke dropping a weight on his head. He received brain concussion surgery lasting three hours at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo. He teaches at Clear Lake and is married to Glenda Landsgaard, formerly a Greens Community School teacher.
The sophomore class sponsors a car wash next Saturday at the O'Brien Standard Station and Teepie Service Station to raise funds.
Dralle's Department Store promotes Hart Schaffner & Marx fall collection during an HS&M Week starting October 18. The feature highlights new suits sport jackets and outer coats with 1966 styling including Sharkeye sharkskin fabric and improved weaving for a subdued rich look.
Allen Chambers 16 died after a one car crash on Marble Rock northern outskirts. Passenger Tom Staudt and another passenger Steve Harmsinjured. All taken to Floyd County Memorial Host Hospital. The trio were students at Rudd Marble Rock Rockford High School returning from Rockford. Funeral arrangements incomplete.
Clarence McCracken who had been at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City for treatment was brought to Clark Nursing Home on Sunday.
Former pastors Rev Harvey Walker now at Nashua Rev John DeLong from Clear Lake and Rev Clayton Becker now at Center Point attended a Greene Methodist reunion along with Dr Arthur Kindred Mason City district superintendent and Rev James S Thomas resident bishop. About 180 people joined a church parlors dinner. Mrs Royal Hardman was saluted for forty years in the Sunday School department and received a Commission on Education picture.
Butler County Dairy Princess Miss Neva Krull will compete for the Iowa Dairy Princess crown at the Iowa Dairy Conference in Cedar Rapids October 20 and 21. The winner will receive a college scholarship and robe allowance while promoting dairy foods as a state representative.
Butler County Courthouse offices will be closed all day Friday October 15 so employees may attend the annual state wide School of Instruction in Des Moines. The event runs Thursday through Saturday October 14 to 16 for county officers.
Rev. John Deines has accepted a call to be senior pastor at Zion Lutheran Church in Davenport, succeeding Pastor E. A. Biedermann who retired due to ill health. He has served as assistant pastor there for five years and will be installed soon.
The River City Chorus an all male group will perform at Marble Rock school auditorium on Tuesday evening October 19 sponsored by Marble Rock Lions Club to raise funds for remodeling the building for a new library. Ron Phillips directs with appearances by the Astro Naughts Schmitt Brothers Vigortones and Novatones plus other quartets recent appearances include Kansas City St Louis and Des Moines. Fred Fenchel and George Wylie will serve as masters of ceremonies.
The Church of Christ will host Rally Day on Sunday October 17 Bible School runs 9:30 to 10:30 a m with William Whitney pastor speaking on The Responsibility of Church Members at 10:30 a m A noon cooperative dinner follows and a 1 30 p m program with music special numbers and a short message invites all to attend all or part of the event
The Youth Center committee sponsors a dance in the high school gymnasium on Saturday evening October 16 from 8:00 to 12:00. High school teachers will be chaperoning and Youth Center rules will apply.
The House of Representatives unanimously upheld Republican H. R. Gross of Iowa’s Third District after Democrat Stephen Peterson of Waterloo filed a contest. The House Administration Committee recommended dismissal, calling Peterson’s case a fishing expedition. Subcommittee Chair Ashmore and Chair Burleson said no fraud evidence existed.
Roy J. Pooley came home last Thursday from Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo after major surgery. Hazel Ray returned home last Wednesday from St. Joseph's Mercy Hospital in Mason City where she was under observation and treatment. M. M. Johnson went home Friday from the Methodist Hospital in Rochester Minnesota following surgery.
Steve Hildebrand son of Mr and Mrs Dale Hildebrand showed a Brown Swiss heifer in the senior yearling class at the Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo The heifer was judged the top blue ribbon winner in that class.
The Meverkin Guernsey herd of Mr and Mrs Edward Merer was analyzed for the second time last week by W A Weeks of North Clarender Vermont. Weeks heads Animal Analysis associates and works with mini herds across the country.
Mrs. Helen Henderson, field representative, announces the Town Association for Retarded Children will address the elementary school in Parkersburg on October 19 at 7 30 p m. Local sponsors of the association in counties Hardin and Grundy include Fr Jer and Black Hawk.
The swine production meeting will be held Thursday October 14 at 3:30 p.m. in the extension office at Allison. Kay A. Connelly, county extension director, invites all Butler County swine producers. Dr. M D Woricker of Iowa State University will speak on breeding stock selection and efficiency with topics including crossbreeding selection standards and rate of gain. Refreshments will follow.
Butler County Republican Chairman Herman Fauver announced a statewide fundraising and organization drive called Buck Night to be held Thursday October 21. The event aims to raise funds for the 1966 campaigns and test county organization, with endorsements from national and state leaders including former Vice President Richard Nixon and State Chairman Robert D. Ray.
Supplemental Aid Warrants were received in the office of the County Superintendent on October 8, 1965. 364 school districts were eligible. total claims amounted to 8,917,288.75 dollars. Available for distribution was 4,000,000 dollars with a pro rata payment percentage of 44.85668359. Butler County districts listed include Clarksville Community School 10,396.16 dollars, New Hartford Consolidated School 6,143.67, Jackson Township 1,029.25, Fremont Township 1,006.95, Shell Rock Township 686.17, West Point Township 471.59, Finchford Consolidated 1,408.62.
The Woman's Club of Greene invites the public to an exceptional program Orphans No Longer by Skip and Marion Westphal of Manson next Tuesday evening October 19 at 8 00 oclock p m in the high school gymnasium. The couple recounts fifty six American couples traveling to Korea to arrange adoption of 81 abandoned orphans with colored slides recordings Korean brassware linen chop sticks and folk songs. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Mrs H Findlay of Indianola spent the week end in the home of Mr and Mrs Harry Downs.
Greene Ramblers dominated North Central 36 to 7 with a versatile attack. Key plays included a 62 yard run, a 75 yard kickoff return TD, and multiple scoring drives in the second half. Ramblers moved to 2-0-1 in conference play behind strong performances from Hagarty Fischer Ramker and Weichers.
Mrs. S W Downs was taken to Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City for treatment on Sunday evening. Walter Kyle and Mrs. Walter Kyle traveled to Des Moines Thursday evening with Walter Thorpe accompanying them and entering the Veteran's Hospital for treatment.
The Commercial Club will meet this evening at 7 30 p m in City Hall. All members are urged to attend.
Word has been received of the death of Daniel C. Carney, 96, a former Greene resident, at his Long Beach home in September. Born January 12, 1869 in Pennsylvania, he moved with family to Greene in 1873, worked in a general store, farmed, ran a Nora Springs restaurant, and later moved to California in December 1900. He was a street car conductor and helped develop the Wrigley district in Los Angeles, member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, past president of the Iowa Association of Long Beach, and Elks member for 60 years. He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Alien, three grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and several brothers and sisters. Services were held at the Presbyterian Church with Elks Club and Rev. o charge. burial in Sunnyside Mausoleum.
Hunters and trappers learned at noon today that raccoon season opens Saturday in Iowa. The State Conservation Commission cited sustained high raccoon populations across most sections of the state as the season begins.
Winston-Salem couple Mr and Mrs Richard Tyndall welcome a daughter named Stacey Elizabeth born October 3. The baby weighs 7 pounds 12 ounces. Mrs Tyndall is the former Margaret Nixt, daughter of Mrs Henry Nixt of Greene.
Emil Martezahn underwent surgery Friday morning at Mercy Hospital in Waverly. The report notes he was admitted for the procedure and is expected to recover under medical supervision.
