New residents Mr and Mrs Donald Holtzee of Palatine Illinois welcomed a son John Brian born October 10 weighing 7 pounds 8 ounces. Mrs Holtzee is formerly Shardl Shultz of Greene. Mr and Mrs Joseph Meyers of Cedar Rapids welcomed a daughter Anne Renee born October 15 at Mercy Hospital. Mrs Meyers is formerly Jane Allison of Greene. Mr and Mrs William Wordmeyer of Greene welcomed a daughter Julie Anne born October 15 at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City weighing 8 pounds 8 ounces.
A dinner at Round Grove Golf and Country Club celebrated the switch to dial phones. Attendees included Mayor Vivian Kingery, city officials, Commercial Club president James Dralle, Northwestern Bell officers, and Newton main office representatives. At 9:00 pm the group viewed the new office, and Mayor Kingery placed the first long distance call to his son in Houston Texas.
The men of Round Grove Golf and Country Club will host a 6:30 p m dinner to honor the ladies of the club on Tuesday evening October 23rd. Ticket reservations are due by Friday evening October 19th.
Chairmen named to run the Mantoux tuberculin testing program in Butler County Schools starting November 5. Burton Sprole of Allison leads the effort with Mrs. Harold Ripley of Clarksville as general chair, and others coordinating health education, public information, nurses, and records. Testing begins November 5. families will be informed by letters and literature with posters planned for wide publicity.
Russell Stewart, 10, broke his left arm Friday around 6 p.m. while pole vaulting at his parents home. He was taken to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City for x rays showing an elbow fracture. his arm was placed in a cast and he returned home.
Emil W. Martzahn underwent major surgery at Mercy Hospital in Waverly on Monday morning.
Community interest supports adult art and sewing classes with potential shop and typing courses. Art classes start Wednesday evening October 24 at 7 pm, led by Mr George Bassett. Sewing begins in January after art. typing and shop may follow. Inquiries to Vern Gard at 823-5631.
Mrs. Carl Taylor aged 76 died Thursday at a Independence hospital after months as a patient. Hattie Ella Hartley born January 13 1886 in Pekin Illinois taught twelve years in Galesburg after Knox College. married Carl Taylor June 26 1928 at Pekin and moved to Greene. Funeral Monday October 15 at 2 PM Williams Mortuary with Rev. George Knutson officiating. burial followed.
Klassi Motors Greene registers boys seven through 11 for a Ford national Punt Pass and Kick contest in cooperation with the NFL. Registration runs through Sunday October 21 at 200 o clock p m at the Athletic Field. Local winners advance to regional contests in 14 NFL cities with prizes including warm up rackets football helmets and autographed footballs.
Interstate Power Company has a contract with The Town of Greene to install 175 Mercury Vapor street lights in residential districts. Lights will auto turn on at dusk and off at daybreak. Work will start soon with completion hoped by the first of the year.
The Quarterback Club will take the Rambler football squad to Ames on Saturday to attend the Iowa State Colorado game. Members should be at the school before 8 30 as buses depart then. Bring a sack lunch and plan to return to Greene by 6 p m.

Clifford Endriss of Sheffield Elza McQueen of Greene and Clifford Riles of Sheffield each paid fines of $5.00 and $4.00 costs on charges of stop sign violations. Tim Bramer of Aredale charged with illegal parking, $5.00 fine and $4.00 costs. Harold Voy of Dumont charged with speeding, $265.00 fine and $4.00 costs.
Hemke Meyer 91 of Parkersburg died Sunday evening October 7 at a rest home in New Hartford. Survived by two sons three daughters including Mrs Henry Schmidt. Funeral at Stout next Wednesday with numerous Schmidt and Landers relatives from Greene Clarksville Des Moines Waverly. Burial in Parkersburg cemetery.
Bruce Maier has enlisted in the Army and left Sunday from Waterloo for Fort Leonard Wood Missouri where he will undergo nine weeks of basic training.
Greene Ramblers overpower Manly 38 to 0 as injuries thin the lineup. Weichers Bramer Ott and Eckhoff star on offense and defense while Eckhoff returns three interceptions for 77 yards. Ramblers advance with stout defense holding Manly to minus rushing yards and set up key scores including a 60 yard return by Eckhoff and a late score by Fottler. Ramblers meet St Ansgar Thursday for Dads Night.
Benjamin Dell Sumpter of Colfax was arrested Saturday October 13 in Aplington on a first offense OVI charge. He pleaded guilty after arraignment, with a $300 fine plus $13 costs and a sixty day license suspension recommended. bond set at $500 and he was released after payment.
Geese appeared in Towa to open the goose hunting season on October 6 with peak migration expected October 15 to 20. Duck population is forming well with a good crop by the duck season opening October 27. Squirrel hunting is hampered by mild weather and mosquitoes but will improve as leaves fall. Rabbits are plentiful in Iowa, particularly in the south, with mortality expected from snowfall cutting the population in half.
Esther Hollingsworth returned home from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Wednesday, marking her discharge after treatment.
