Dr William Andrews learned of his sister Mrs R E Thornbury of Marshalltown death at Evangelical Hospital Friday. She is survived by her husband two daughters Mrs Floyd Fawcett West Branch and Mrs J A Cox Raleigh NC four grandchildren three great grandchildren seven brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church in Marshalltown Monday afternoon. Attending were Dr and Mrs Andrews Melinda and Mr and Mrs Duane Enabnit Marble Rock.
Scoutmaster Henry Smeins and the Boy Scouts conduct the final part of the Good Turn Day Clothing Drive for Goodwill Industries. Greene residents should place filled bags on the front step by 8:30 a.m. this Saturday October 13 with no doorbell ringing.
O M V I charged Everett Francis White of Freeport Illinois with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in Parkersburg on October 4. He pled guilty in district court and Judge Butler set a 300 fine with 1700 costs or 90 days in jail. The fine was unpaid and White remains in the county jail.
Almiria Beattie died Thursday October 4 at Williams Nursing Home in LaPorte City where she had lived since June. Born October 9, 1881 in Greene to John and Anna Trimbell Halstead Beattie was a Greene resident all her life and member of the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors: son Port Beattie of Waterloo, daughter Zelma Showers of Davenport, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Funeral at Williams Mortuary Greene Saturday at 1 30 p m with Rev G F Butler officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Williams Mortuary handled arrangements.
Fine issued to J. P. Knight and W. L. Klassi in Greene Court for parking violation. Each offender owes a $1.00 fine.
Iowa marks its first pork month this October featuring Sir Hamalot the cartoon mascot created by the Iowa Swine Producers Association. Butler County reps Francis Brinkman John Kalainoff and LeRoy Faint promote Iowa Pork Month in stores and restaurants across the county. The state pork industry generates about a billion dollars in annual income and supplies roughly a quarter of the nation's ham.
Darrell Buss an 18 year old of rural Waverly was arrested Tuesday October 9 by Sheriff Pete E Boomgarden in Shell Rock on a charge of Larceny in the Night time over $20.00. He was arranged in Frank Knight's Court with bond set at $1000. Buss is being held in the county jail in Allison accused of taking a carburetor intake manifold and a car radio from three cars in the Shell Rock vicinity.
Elmer Heddens has returned home to the Cedar Valley Hospital after his ring finger on the left hand was amputated following an accident at his farm home northeast of Greene. He was suspended by a bolt on a truck while inspecting shelled corn, received fifteen stitches, and underwent the later amputation.
Rev and Mrs Marvin Beninga of Jesup welcomed a son born Saturday October 6 weighing 10 pounds 7 ounces. The infant was named John David. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs George Beninga and Mr and Mrs Karl Kleinschmidt.
Aboard Ship Roland Ray the son of Mr and Mrs Wilson Ray has been transferred to the U S S Saratoga in Florida from the Navy base at Norfolk Virginia.
Greene plants the dial telephone system at the United Telephone Company of Iowa with a new brick building housing offices, equipment room and shop. Manager Levi Ackart and staff including cashier Bessie Heddens and lineman Ed Kline will operate the modernized line, replacing old methods to speed calls, especially in storms or emergencies. Retiring operators Ruth Jowell 20 years Ora Shat zer 9 years and Ruth Hardy 18 years are noted along with long service staff Esther Payne Edna Merfeld Barbara Siemons Lillian Albrecht and Janice Chapmin. Toll calls go through Bell Office at Charles City. The 1878 Greene telephone story recalls early devices and local franchise battles with Cedar Valley Construction and Greene Western operators Kime Loeshe.
Round Grove Golf and Country Club hosts Ladies Night on Tuesday October 23 with a 6 30 dinner. The event features the men entertaining the ladies in the evening arranged schedule and social entertainment.

Dr Ray J Bryan head of Vocational Education at Iowa State University will headline the first Butler County Career Conference on Tuesday October 16 at 7 30 PM in Allison High School. The event offers two 40 minute sessions led by professionals in fields from auto mechanics to teaching and nursing with questions invited. High school students and parents are urged to attend this county wide event organized by Butler County schools and the County Extension Service.
Wilford Olmstead, 37, of Shell Rock, was arrested October 4 in Shell Rock on two counts of disturbing the peace and intoxication. He pleaded guilty in the Shell Rock Justice of the Peace court and received fifteen days for each count.
Paul Beguelin was admitted to Cedar Valley Hospital in Tharles City for treatment.
Mrs Curtis Kyhl and her sons Cary and Clinton visit her parents Mr and Mrs Everett Squires and her in laws Mr and Mrs Vernon Kyhl at Parkersburg for a month. Lt Kyle traveled to Waterloo for a weekend with his wife and family then returned to Fort Rucker on Sunday.
Ramblers overpower the Nora Springs Rock Falls Eagles 42 to 7 on Friday night. Kingery steals show with 342 rushing yards and multiple touchdowns while Weichers stars on offense and defense. Next game at Manly this Friday. Greene hosts St Ansgar on Oct 18.
Gertrude Fagan nee Greene born February 18 1882 in Greene died October 6 in Indianola after residence in the area. Survivors include sons Leon Mitchell Indianola Harmon Mitchell Rockford Illinois and Bruce Mitchell Rockford Illinois. daughter Dorothy Hough Rochelle Illinois. ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Services conducted by Rev G F Butler at Reid Hamilton Funeral Chapel and graveside at Rose Hill Cemetery.
Sgt. Dick Smith, newly assigned U. S Army recruiter, will visit Allison at the Draft Board each Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. and will be at the Greene Post Office on Tuesdays from noon to 2:00 p.m. He will meet with local residents to discuss enlistment opportunities and answer questions about service.
Lester Lee Dralle, 22, of Iowa Falls, appeared in district court Monday and pleaded guilty to driving while license was under suspension. Judge Butler fined him $200 plus $27.80 costs. He was arrested in Dumont July 7 by the highway patrol.
