Rites Held for Mrs. R Thornbury

Dr William Andrews learned of his sister Mrs R E Thornbury of Marshalltown death at Evangelical Hospital Friday. She is survived by her husband two daughters Mrs Floyd Fawcett West Branch and Mrs J A Cox Raleigh NC four grandchildren three great grandchildren seven brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held at the First Methodist Church in Marshalltown Monday afternoon. Attending were Dr and Mrs Andrews Melinda and Mr and Mrs Duane Enabnit Marble Rock.

Everett White Arrested for DUI in Parkersburg

O M V I charged Everett Francis White of Freeport Illinois with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated in Parkersburg on October 4. He pled guilty in district court and Judge Butler set a 300 fine with 1700 costs or 90 days in jail. The fine was unpaid and White remains in the county jail.

Even Beattie Rites Held Last Saturday

Almiria Beattie died Thursday October 4 at Williams Nursing Home in LaPorte City where she had lived since June. Born October 9, 1881 in Greene to John and Anna Trimbell Halstead Beattie was a Greene resident all her life and member of the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors: son Port Beattie of Waterloo, daughter Zelma Showers of Davenport, six grandchildren, two great grandchildren. Funeral at Williams Mortuary Greene Saturday at 1 30 p m with Rev G F Butler officiating. Burial in Rose Hill Cemetery. Williams Mortuary handled arrangements.

Darrell Buss Charged With Larceny in Night Time

Darrell Buss an 18 year old of rural Waverly was arrested Tuesday October 9 by Sheriff Pete E Boomgarden in Shell Rock on a charge of Larceny in the Night time over $20.00. He was arranged in Frank Knight's Court with bond set at $1000. Buss is being held in the county jail in Allison accused of taking a carburetor intake manifold and a car radio from three cars in the Shell Rock vicinity.

Amputated Finger Ends Man’s Long Recovery Home

Elmer Heddens has returned home to the Cedar Valley Hospital after his ring finger on the left hand was amputated following an accident at his farm home northeast of Greene. He was suspended by a bolt on a truck while inspecting shelled corn, received fifteen stitches, and underwent the later amputation.

Rev and Mrs Marvin Beninga of Jesup welcomed a son born Saturday October 6 weighing 10 pounds 7 ounces. The infant was named John David. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs George Beninga and Mr and Mrs Karl Kleinschmidt.

Dial System Starts in Greene Monday in October 15

Greene plants the dial telephone system at the United Telephone Company of Iowa with a new brick building housing offices, equipment room and shop. Manager Levi Ackart and staff including cashier Bessie Heddens and lineman Ed Kline will operate the modernized line, replacing old methods to speed calls, especially in storms or emergencies. Retiring operators Ruth Jowell 20 years Ora Shat zer 9 years and Ruth Hardy 18 years are noted along with long service staff Esther Payne Edna Merfeld Barbara Siemons Lillian Albrecht and Janice Chapmin. Toll calls go through Bell Office at Charles City. The 1878 Greene telephone story recalls early devices and local franchise battles with Cedar Valley Construction and Greene Western operators Kime Loeshe.

Dr Ray J Bryan head of Vocational Education at Iowa State University will headline the first Butler County Career Conference on Tuesday October 16 at 7 30 PM in Allison High School. Man Sentenced After Peace Disturbance in Shell Rock

Wilford Olmstead, 37, of Shell Rock, was arrested October 4 in Shell Rock on two counts of disturbing the peace and intoxication. He pleaded guilty in the Shell Rock Justice of the Peace court and received fifteen days for each count.

Army Recruiter Schedule in Greene and Allison

Sgt. Dick Smith, newly assigned U. S Army recruiter, will visit Allison at the Draft Board each Tuesday from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. and will be at the Greene Post Office on Tuesdays from noon to 2:00 p.m. He will meet with local residents to discuss enlistment opportunities and answer questions about service.

Iowa Falls man pleads guilty to suspended license driving

Lester Lee Dralle, 22, of Iowa Falls, appeared in district court Monday and pleaded guilty to driving while license was under suspension. Judge Butler fined him $200 plus $27.80 costs. He was arrested in Dumont July 7 by the highway patrol.
