James Dralle of Buchholz and Dralle Store won a trip to Tennessee as a prize for selling Barwick carpets in the Mill Trip contest. He departed Des Moines by plane Tuesday morning for Chattanooga to visit the mall and will travel to Atlanta for a dinner and salesman entertainment today. He plans to return to Des Moines at 6:30 pm.
New officers include Harold Williams as president and Kenneth Knight as secretary. One year board of directors features Bill Walker commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and John Groathuis commander of the American Legion, with Joan Van Eschen as legal counselor and directors Howard Raisty and Gordon Schafer.
Four men answered the September induction call in Butler County. Clarence Heise of Shell Rock volunteered while Ronald Niehaus of Clarksville Delbert Huisman and Robert Abbas of Parkersburg were drafted. Two men were called in October William Scallon of Ackley and Robert Kelm of Dumont. Three men went to Des Moines on October 10 for pre induction physicals. Six men will join the November 3 induction call.
Infant Karen Jean Bloom daughter of Mr and Mrs Ronald Bloom was baptised at the Methodist Church in Godebolt on Sunday morning October 13. Attending the service were Mrs Helen Schwartz and Karen Jean’s grandparents Mr and Mrs Walter Kyle.
Mr and Mrs Lowell Maxson returned home Monday evening from Denver Colorado where they spent a week with their daughter Sandy.
Ralph W. Sylvester 76 died at home in Greene on Friday October 11 after a life spanning Iowa farming Clarksville drug trade and Greene retirement Born July 15 1887 near Clarence he studied pharmacy at the State University of Iowa 1905 Married Nellie Hesalroad July 24 1912 they ran a Clarksville drug store 34 years before retiring to Greene 1947 He belonged to First Methodist Church Butler Lodge 94 AM and AF Clarksville and The Iowa Consistory Cedar Rapids Survived by wife son John K Sylvester of Hyattsville MD and sister Emile Elijah of Loveland CO Preceded by parents and several siblings Funeral rites at Reid's Funeral Chapel Monday at 2 pm Rev Wayne Gyerde officiated Burial Rose Hill Cemetery Arrangements by Reid's.

Mrs John Wenning came home last Wednesday from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after major surgery. William Fisher returned home Friday from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City after a few days of treatment.

Fines imposed on Francis Lyle Brinkman of Greene for speeding, $1000 fine and $400 costs. Roger F. Hirsh of Rockwell charged with speeding, paid $600 fine and $54 costs. Radar picked him up on Highway 20.
Edmund Sorenson 77 was laid to rest after a funeral at the M. E. Church in Crystal Lake Saturday afternoon attended by Mr and Mrs John Azerski and Mrs George Shultz. He was the father of their son in law Calvin Sorenson of Crystal Lake.

The Greene Community School will be closed this Friday October 18 for the annual teachers convention in Des Moines. All students will be dismissed early Thursday afternoon and buses will take students home at 3 15 PM.
Douglas Jewell son of Mr and Mrs Aaron Jewell returned home Friday from Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City where he was a patient for three weeks after an emergency appendectomy.
Renowned Russian pianist Jakov Flere will appear on Wartburg College's Artist Series in Waverly on October 20 after opening his first American tour with the New York Philharmonic. The performance, at 8 pm in the chapel auditorium, follows the New York opening October 10–13 with Leonard Bernstein conducting.

The Greene Community High School vocal music department presents a concert next Wednesday evening October 23 at 8:00 p.m. The mixed chorus boys and girls glee clubs and the Top Twenty will be featured. Miss Glenda Landsgaard is the vocal instructor.
Jim Marshall and Marvin Moser of Greene each took third place in stock car races at Nashua last Sunday afternoon. Marshall earned third in the Third Heat while Moser finished third in the A Semi Main. This marked the final race of the season.
William Ramker submits nomination papers to run for mayor in the upcoming town election on November 5. Mayor Vivian Kinger not seeking reelection. council candidates include Dr. D. T. Drees John Hamplton David Markle and Melvin Yerkes. Leonard Wichel has filed to replace Ramker as councilman.

The Greere Fire Department was summoned to the Dean Davis farm Friday at 10:20 as hot grease ignited a fire. Firefighters arrived after the blaze was already extinguished and smoke damage was noted.

Mrs Franc (Ned) Kester of Juneau Alabama visited in the home of Mrs Alyce Kanter from Sunday to Tuesday. She was also a guest in the James H Graven home. She attended the Supreme Chapter Convention of the PE O Sisterhood in Columbus Ohio and visited her brother in Pittsburg Pennsylvania. On the return trip she visited Fascite Cedar Rapids before boarding a plane to Juneau. Francis Kester is chief statistician in the office of Vital Statistics at the State House in Juneau.
New cars and farm equipment will be shown on Main Street Saturday evening October 19. Main Street will close at 6 PM to let dealers arrange displays. Models include 1964 Chevrolets Fords and brands from John Deere International Harvester and Massey Ferguson. Music Mothers sponsor a street dance 8 PM to 11 PM with the high school stage band playing. lunch will be sold after 7 PM to raise funds for band uniforms.

Fire crews from Greene and Marble Rock battled a midnight blaze at the Gerald Hildebrand residence destroying a large barn while firefighters saved the house and nearbyOutbuildings. A thunderstorm was ongoing and the cause remained undetermined. Earlier, a grass fire was tackled along the railroad right of way two blocks south of the viaduct, reportedly started by a flare from a passing train. Jerome McDermott reported the latter blaze and it was quickly extinguished.
Mr W F Dougherts of Salina Kansas spent Thursday afternoon and evening with Emmett Hanley. Dougherts played ball with a Dougherty team in the early 1920s.
