Marinette football under former Greene coach Dennis Mair opened at home with a 19 to 13 victory over arch rival Wheaton. The win fuels a bright outlook for the team as they move forward this season.
The Iowa State Tax Commission reports fiscal year 1963 totals for Butler County. Greene led with 286 returns totaling 69,651.72 dollars, followed by Allison 187 for 61,272.30, Clarksville 213 for 37,384.41, Parkersburg 282 for 52,313.02, Shell Rock 127 for 17,456.35, and other towns 624 returns for 86,764.42 plus 109 non permit returns totaling 2,733.35. Use tax receipts list by town. new motor vehicles and trailers in Butler County totaled 43,221.29 from 763 vehicles.
Timmy O'Brien five year old son of Mrs Cyrilla O'Brien underwent major eye surgery at Park Hospital in Mason City on Saturday and returned home on Sunday.
A tuberculosis case finding drive starts in Butler County with a Contact X-ray program directed by R N Mrs Mattie Peterson. Persons referred will take a tuberculin skin test to screen for chest x rays. those reactive will get a State Mobile X-ray Unit appointment. The effort is endorsed by local medical bodies and funded by Christmas Seals.
Next Wednesday October 16 at 1 30 p m a Charm School titled How to Look Your Best will be held in the Farm Bureau Auditorium Allison. Kay Connelly County Extension Director says Miss Opal Roberson Clothing Specialist from Iowa State University will conduct the program. The Butler County Extension Family Living committee sponsors with coffee and cookies after. Local women will learn accessories hair styling makeup and grooming with all women invited to attend.
Iowans plan trips to northeast Iowa for fall color as peak color is expected this week with the weekend of the 12th and 13th likely the best time to view the scenery. The color attracts thousands who come to view, fish, or motor through the countryside before winter.
On Tuesday afternoon October 1 near the Slaughter House area south of Marble Rock in the Shell Rock River, 11 year old Tom Brunner caught an 8 pound Northern. He fished with a single hook daredevil lure, aided by his 12 year old brother Tim and his mother who were fishing nearby.
Jim Marshall of Greene won two firsts in the First Heat and Semi Main at the Nashua fairgrounds stock car races on Sunday afternoon. Marvin Moser of Greene took a third in the consolation event.
Duynard Harken of Farkersburg was reelected by 4-H club leaders to serve as chairman for a second year. Clarence Wubbena of Allison was elected to represent Jefferson, Jackson, West Point and Ripley townships, replacing John Hartman. Harley Hansen of Plainfield was reelected for a second two year term representing Fremont, Butler and Dayton townships. George Wills of Aplington was reelected to represent Monroe, Washington and Madison townships for his first two year term. Ted DeBerg of Bristow and Abel Schrage of Shell Rock also serve on the committee.

Seven year old Gene Shultz son of Mr and Mrs Jack D Shultz had a tonsillectomy at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City Friday morning. He returned home Saturday.

A. D. Campbell of near Charles Civ harvested a hubbard squash that grew through a drainage tile. The squash filled the tile and protruded from both ends. Tile sections lay in the fence row as Campbell pulled the squash loose, discovering the unusual growth only after removing it from the vine.
The Greene Commercial Club elected Charles Ray president and Paul Wunsch vice president at the final meeting of the year held Thursday evening at the Elementary School auditorium. Mrs Russell Barry was reelected secretary and treasurer. The summer promotion report was heard and fall promotions were discussed.

Ronald Moen of Greene joined about 200 elementary and secondary mathematics teachers and students at the 33rd annual Conference of Teachers of Mathematics held Friday at the State University of Iowa in Iowa City. The event centered on "The Use of New Educational Media" and featured two educational television pioneers Julius H. Hlavaty, a retired New York mathematics teacher, and Henry Van Engen, a University of Wisconsin mathematics and education professor.

Sherilyn Stuntz was crowned 1963 Homecoming Queen at Greene High School during halftime of the Greene Nera Springs football game. Attendants Judy Kier, Vicki Brunsma, Joen Stauffer, and Lana Chenery received corsages. a large crowd attended and the day ended with a Homecoming dance and refreshments served by the student council.
Week end visitors Mr and Mrs Earl Hyers and family of Chicago Winds spent the week end in the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Albert Barth. Saturday night and Sunday visitors were Mr and Mrs Philip Carrell and a daughter Rom of St Paul Minnesota.
