The editor notes a stretch of rainy weather giving way to sunny Sunday outings and fall color displays. Many readers enjoyed outdoor tasks and Mississippi river views, urging appreciation of local scenery and a lighter mood after the siege of rain.
Skip and Marion Westphal of Manson present Orphans No Longer at Greene High School auditorium on Tuesday evening October 19. Sponsored by the Woman's Club, the couple previously presented African Heritage to a large Greene crowd. Public is invited to attend.
Mr and Mrs Mont Clifton departed Monday to relocate to Hemet California where they will establish their new home.
The seventh and eighth grade team won their first two games. At Rockford on September 28 they beat Rudd 21 to 0, with Jim Worley scoring the opening TD and Gary Johnson adding a 35 yard TD after a Rudd pass. A Woodley reception set up another score. In Greene against Marble Rock the team trailed 12-0 at halftime but came back to win 13-12 on strong defense and key plays by Worley and Johnson. The next game is October 12 at Greene against Riceville.
The Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service in Allison announced that effective October 1 farmers may graze livestock on diverted acres but hay may not be taken from these acres. Designated diverted acres may also be plowed at any time.
About 175 Jaycee members and guests gathered in Greene for Charter Night. Larry Voigts served as master of ceremonies and Rev. Wayne Gjerde offered the invocation and benediction. Dr. R. H. Jaspers was installed as president with officers named including Levi Ackart as VP and Norman Graven secretary. Guest Evan Hultman of Waterloo, former Iowa Attorney General, spoke.
Donn Schafer of Greene is one of 48 candidates on the State College of Iowa freshman football team. The squad opens a four game schedule Thursday October 7 at Mankato State Minnesota with Schafer bidding for a starting guard position. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Ivan Schafer.
Mr and Mrs Joe Miller of Allison announce the birth of their son Timmy Russell in a hospital at Waverly on Friday October 1. The baby weighs 6 pounds 11 ounces. Mrs Miller is the former Marlene Meyers daughter of Mr and Mrs Russell Meyers of Greene.
Roger Fleming, secretary treasurer of the American Farm Bureau Federation, will be the featured speaker at the Butler County Farm Bureau annual meeting on October 21 at 7:00 p.m. A free ham supper will follow at the Farm Bureau Auditorium in Allison. Fleming, a Tama County cattleman and Iowa State College graduate, has held Iowa Farm Bureau posts and led the Washington office since May 15, 1948.
Iowa Republicans unveil two first time projects for October. A statewide Buck Night fund drive targets every county on October 21 to boost party organization and campaign funds. Mary Brooks will tour Iowa October 11-13 to address precinct workers across seven districts, with a Mason City library meeting on October 13 at 2:00 p.m.
A tree trimming party is planned at the Country Club on Sunday morning. All members should gather at the Country Club at 9 00 with their saws axes and other trimming gear.
Miss Candy Ray daughter of Mr and Mrs Charles Ray was crowned Homecoming Queen at Greene High during halftime of the Greene Nora Springs game. Attendants Ann Rottler Bonny Siemens Flora Stubbe and Linda Stuntz. Jane Witwer former queen placed crown and clock. Senior float won with Wooden Shoe Know Nora's In Dutch. The queen and attendants hosted a post game dance with refreshments.
Two evening meetings on swine production will be held at Allison this month per Kay Connelly County Extension Director. Dr M D Whitaker and Dr Emmett Stevermer from Iowa State University will discuss nutrition breeding and management October 14 and 28 at 7 30 p m at the County Extension Office. All swine producers are urged to attend both sessions for practical information and Q A.
Postmaster Robert L. Curtis announces Iowa wide Scheduled Service for parcel post. The system covers 356000 square miles with 1096 offices and 1 096 post offices offering one and two day delivery. Assistant Postmaster General Tyler Abel says the program delivers first rate service for fourth class mail and hinges on precise timing of bulk mail transfers at major cities. In Greene the service will start with 4 00 pm pickups and next day delivery for nearby offices, with a two day option for distant locations five days a week.
Leon Glaspie of Greene charged with losing control of vehicle. paid a $10.00 fine and $4.00 costs. Roger Arthur Juhl of Greene charged with failing to yield one half of traveled portion of highway. paid a $16.00 fine and $4.00 costs.
Scoutmaster Henry Smeins leads the Boy Scouts in the final part of the Good Turn Day Clothing Drive for Goodwill Industries. Greene residents should place filled bags on their front steps by 8:30 a.m. Saturday for pickup and avoid doorbell ringing.
Officials announce cost-sharing available to farmers in Butler County who have not engaged in conservation work recently. Eligible participants can receive aid for any conservation practice they undertake this season. Poor weather has paused most work, but limestone spreading may resume after ground freezes this fall.
The Ramblers edged the Nora Springs Eagles 15 to 14 at home last Friday in a tense game. Darwin Ramker returned to boost the offense alongside John Barth and strong defensive play from Gary Schafer and others. Nora Springs received solid drives from Bill Witt Randy Hoel Kim Coates John Gooder Duane Koch and Dave Sletten before a late Ramblers stop preserved the win.
Crowned queen is Jean Janssen daughter of Mr and Mrs Bert Janssen of Plainfield. The Janssen family former residents of Greene and members of the Presbyterian Church attended Plainfield homecoming Friday evening.
Darvl Barnett, son of Mrs Iva Barnett, underwent knee surgery at Mercy Hospital Mason City on Thursday morning and returned home Tuesday. Mrs Ernest Gist of Greene had major surgery Tuesday morning at Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City.

Mrs Max Dougherty was discharged Thursday to home in Mason City after undergoing minor surgery at Park Hospital.

In Hospital Roger Ponto is a patient in the Mercy Hospital in Mason City where he is under observation and treatment. Clarence McCracken was taken to Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Monday for treatment.
Local weather observers note over 15 inches of rain in Greene during September. Farmers to the south and west report up to 18 inches, while those north of Greene recorded 12 to 14 inches.

Iowa law requires vaccination for all dogs over three months old. Dr. John B. Herrick of Iowa State University warns dog owners to vaccinate, obtain a certificate and tag, and ensure licensing. After June 1 1966 unvaccinated dogs found at large will be impounded pending vaccination and payment.
