Scoutmaster Henry Smeins leads the Boy Scouts in the final part of the Good Turn Day Clothing Drive for Goodwill Industries. Bags from Greene homes will be collected by 8:00 a.m. and taken to a central station for pickup by the Goodwill truck next week. Do not place newspapers or magazines in the bags.
Lowell Maxson the local fire chief urges Greene and nearby communities to hold the Operation Edith home exit drill today. Families should practice two easy exits and designate a meeting place to prevent reentry, ensuring all members can escape safely.
Expenditures from public assistance funds totaled 6 182 630 for September with medical care at 557 856 and payments to recipients delayed by the state under Title XIX. Butler County total 31 990 with 19 444 Old Age Assistance 8 794 Aid to Dependent Children 1 008 Aid to Blind and 2 744 Aid to Disabled.
Vernon O Larsen Butler County Auditor was elected president of the Iowa State Association of Counties at the Counties twenty fourth Annual Conference held at the Hotel Fort Des Moines from October 5 to 7. He has served four years on the executive board and previously as president of the County Auditors Association of Town two years and as second and first vice president for one year each. This marks the first time a Butler County official has held the post. The I S A C Annual Conference is the largest event of its kind in Des Moines.
The Quarterback Club will meet Tuesday evening October 17 at 8:00 in the high school cafeteria. A film will be shown.
The Rambler reserves were defeated by Aplington varsity 30 to 7 on Saturday evening. Aplington scored two touchdowns in the first and third quarters and one in the second, failing on extra points. Greene scored Rambler’s lone touchdown on a late pass from Gary Johnson to Jim Merfeld, with another Johnson to Merfeld pass good for the extra point. Rambler and Aplington each had 8 and 7 first downs respectively.
Master Masons of North Central Iowa plan a Masonic Workshop at the Masonic Temple in Mason City on October 21. Twenty nine Lodges across nine counties including Winnebago Wright and others will be represented. The meeting opens at 1 00 p m DST led by Clifford Bryant and Ted Enabait of Hardin Lodge No 649 Mason City.
Mr and Mrs Wayne Thomason received a call from Specialist Terry Thomason stationed with the List artillery at Wackerheim Germany. He said he would undertake a ten day tour covering Austria the Alps France Italy and Spain.
The Iowa State Tax Commission released the report for the quarter ending June 30 1967 showing taxes paid on retailers for the quarter ending March 31 1967 Allison led county towns with 23803 77 Greene was second with 17814 37 Other towns followed Parkersburg 14894 76 Clarksville 11615 80 Aplington 6594 56 Shell Rock 5803 29 Dumont 5686 92 New Hartford 3422 70 rural 2407 97 under 500 population 1693 20 and non permit 93 69 A total of 305 77 was sent in for consumer use tax from Butler County and 14009 23 was used for motor vehicles and trailers bought in the county.
The first story hour of the year will be held at Greene Public Library on Saturday October 14. Mrs. Robert Fischer reports that children four years old and over should arrive at 1 15. The program will conclude about 2 00. Children are requested to use the side entrance.
Jim Anthony called his mother Mrs. Mable Anthony on Sunday for his 21st birthday anniversary. He is stationed at Phu Bai Vietnam and relayed his message via short wave radio from the west coast.
Jerilyn Worley was crowned homecoming queen at the Nora Springs Eagles versus Greene Ramblers football game on Friday night. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Worley. attendants include Lynette Kingery Barbara Osier Marilyn Johnson and Ann Allison. Floats from the junior and junior high won prizes for themes Debeak the Eagles Clip Their Wings and Were Expecting a Victory respectively.
John L. Stock USN son of Elmer C. Stock and husband of Sharlene Hildebrand of Greene serves as fire control technician aboard the destroyer USS Black off the coast of Viet Nam. The ship joins the Seventh Fleet providing gunfire support and taking part in operations.
Nursing home records show Hans Joe Johanson of Greene and Leo Harvey of Clarksville becoming new residents at Clark Nursing Home in Greene.
Butler County Career Night at Allison-Bristow High School on Tuesday October 17 at 7 30 pm. CAL High School of Latimer will join. keynote by Donald Lippold, Hawkeye Institute of Technology, Waterloo, on The World at Work. Various career sessions cover many fields. Pre enrollment forms were distributed. organizers Kermit Kildahl and Guy Olson coordinate.
Vandals broke into the Allison High School building through a rear window and pried open three offices causing ransacking. About 340 dollars from a cash box and 10 from a pop machine were taken. At Farmers Feed and Grain, operator Lester Van Raden reported a broken door, a tipped safe, and 70 dollars plus 10 dollars from a pop machine stolen. Similar Wednesday night break-ins were reported at the Nashua school.
The Round Grove Golf and Country Club held its annual meeting on Tuesday evening October 3. George Sam Sneed was elected president, Harry Green as vice president, and Mrs Elmer Stock as secretary treasurer. New directors are William Nordmeyer and Mr Sneed for three year terms and John Backer for a two year term.
Mrs. Wilma Flora Gallaghar died October 31 in Rockford Washington. Born September 1 1900 in Greene she was the daughter of Harvey and Flora. She married William Gallaghar in 1917 at Turtle River Minnesota. Survivors include son seven grandchildren sister Esther Barnett of Greene and brothers Earl Flora Cass Lake and Paul Flora Charles City. Husband and a daughter preceded her in death. Burial was in Colville Washington October 6.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Shatzer report their son Lt Col Dale Shatzer has been moved from Rochester New York to Norfolk Virginia He serves as communications electronics operations plans and training officer on the staff of Lt General Weede the commanding general of the Fleet Marine Force Atlantic Over the Marine ground and Air Force on the east coast including the Mediterranean Caribbean and Cuba
Mrs. Ralph Sylvester was taken to Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Monday evening for treatment. Henry Bliss was admitted by ambulance to the same hospital on Tuesday morning for treatment.
The Ramblers upset Nora Springs 40 to 13 to stay 2-0 in Greene conference play and share the lead with Nashua and Rockford. Jeff Drake stood out with 28 points on 4 touchdowns, 212 rushing yards, 18 receiving yards, and 23 tackles. Stuntz Merfeld and Siemens fueled the offense while Nettleton Wunsch and Truitt anchored defense.
Greene junior high football swept three wins with the Ramblers defeating Nora Springs 21 to 6 on Tuesday. Shultz, Trees and Schoenfeld scored with Osier adding the extra points. Freshmen beat Rudd 12 to 6 and freshmen-sophomores beat Nora Springs 13 to 7. Upcoming games include Marble Rock at Rockford 4:00, Manly at home Monday 7:00, and Nashua away Tuesday at 4:00.
Six persons filed nomination papers for city council and two filed for mayor for the November 7 election by the filing deadline last evening. Incumbent W. J. Ramker and Myron Eikenberry filed for mayor, while incumbents Douglas Walker Clarence Teeple and David Markle sought council seats. Also filing were Gordon Anderson Kenneth Henline and Marvin Nelson. Five councilmen and a mayor will be elected on Tuesday November 7.

Linda Stuntz daughter of Clyde and Mrs Stuntz will receive a nurses cap in a candlelight ceremony at 2 p.m. October 15 in the Ballroom Iowa Memorial Union University of Iowa College of Nursing. Loretta Ford professor at University of Colorado will address attendees and Dean Laura C Dus tan of the U of I College of Nursing will welcome the class.
Twenty five pew Bibles will be dedicated in memory of Wm. S. Johnson by family and friends during the 10 15 Sunday worship at the First Presbyterian Church. A set of Daily Bible Study commentaries for the church library will be dedicated in memory of Mr and Mrs James A Miller by their family and friends.
Aviation Fire Control Technician Airman David C. Ritter, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace W. Ritter of Greene, completed the Aviation Fire Control Technician School at the Naval Training Center Memphis. He studied safety, reports, and basic aviation gunfire control theory after a prior two week Aviation Familiarization and a 19 week Electronics Fundamentals course.
Mr and Mrs Orval Kingery returned home Wednesday after attending funeral services for Clarence E Hunter in Basin Wyoming on Monday afternoon. Burial with Masonic rites followed in Rawlins Wyoming Tuesday afternoon. Hunter born May 23 1661 at Encampment Wyoming to Edward and Delphine Hunter died September 28 in Casper Wyoming after a long illness. Survivors include his wife Nellie two daughters one son five brothers two sisters and eight grandchildren.
