The Rev. Merril Clark missionary to New Guinea will headline the St. John's Lutheran Church Wilmar Mission Festival on October 7. He is on furlough after seven years in New Guinea and currently attends the University of Wisconsin at River Falls. The Wilmar church sponsors the event to boost the American Lutheran Church mission program.
Joe Wood a patient at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines underwent spinal surgery last Friday. He resides in 3B Room 372. Esther Hollingsworth also had surgery Tuesday morning at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City.
A pass punt and kick contest for 8 9 10 and 11 year olds will be held at the Athletic Field on Sunday October 21 according to Wilbur Klassi local Ford dealer sponsor. Prizes include an athletic jacket for first place runner up helmets for second and footballs for third. Distances will be sent to the state and top distances to NFL area with 10 winners advancing to national championships. Entry blanks at Klassi Motors.
John McWhirter of Alison, county chairman, reported Butler county August savings bond sales at $39,094, raising the night-month total to $585,994 or 51 percent of the annual quota. Iowa August Series E and H sales totaled $8,134,726, eight-month state total $77,794,394, reaching 52 percent of its goal.
Daryl Davis will begin duties on October 1 as Conservation Aid for the Butler Soil Conservation District. He replaces Herb Beaver transferred to the State office in Salina Kansas last June. Davis, 34, married with two children, previously served as Conservation Aid in Wayne County District for several years.
The first county wide Career Conference will be held Tuesday October 16 at 7 30 pm at the Allison High School building. Dr Ray Bryan head of Vocational Education Iowa State University will be the guest speaker. Two conference sessions will follow with successful men and women explaining their vocations. The event is a joint effort of Butler County Schools and County Extension Service for all high school students and parents. About 25 vocations will be represented and students are completing a questionnaire to determine offerings.
The Butler County Dairy Promotion Committee re elected Kenneth Rodman of Clarksville as president for 1963. Harley Hansen of Plainfield was chosen treasurer and Ronnie Miller of Clarksville plus Marvin Westendorf of Allison will serve on the committee. Two vacancies remain to be filled this fall. Plans for the 1963 Daily Day were discussed and will be co sponsored by the Parkersburg Chamber of Commerce and held in Parkersburg in June.
Returned home sped with Mrs. Roger Marsh and daughter Julie after a two week visit in the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. Willard Marsh in Fort Devin's Massachusetts.
Memorial services for George A. Crabtree will be held Saturday October 6 at 2:00 PM at the Reid-Hamilton Funeral Chapel in Greene. Mr. Crabtree died in Ventura California on September 17 and burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Renee Hagarty was named Homecoming Queen at Greene High School during halftime of the Greene-Riceville game. Her attendants were Sara Green Joyce Kelly Diane Cheney and Jo Ann Backer. The senior class float won top honor and a large crowd attended the festivities with the dance and refreshments served by the student council.
Mr and Mrs Fred Brinkman returned home Sunday after a several days visit with Mr and Mrs Carl Bose in Dumas Texas Mrs Nelson Bose and daughter Lori joined the Brinkmans and will stay several weeks Mrs Bose is in Washington DC
Mrs Herbert Barnett is recuperating at home after a fall at her residence last week. X rays show no broken bones and her condition is improving.
Dale Leonard Creeden 54 of Cedar Falls died at home from a heart attack on September 28. Born August 10 1908 at Aredale to Will and Ethyl Creeden he married Kathryn Kittlesby August 31 1944 in Calmar. A former Greene resident he moved to Cedar Falls about 30 years ago and led Cedar Crest Hatcherr Inc as president. Survived by wife two sons Bill and Paul two daughters Mrs Harold Squires Mary Ann a Kahler Nursing student. mother Ethyl of Hampton four brothers Gerald Lloyd Carl Bernard two sisters Mrs M M Sullivan Mechanicsburg PA and Mrs Robert Kelly Milwaukee WI and two grandchildren. Funeral at Nazareth Lutheran Church Cedar Falls with Rev Homer Larsen. burial Greenwood Cemetery Cedar Falls.
New resident families report newborns in North St. Paul Dumont Charles City and Pensacola details include birth dates at Cedar Valley Hospital and base hospital. Scott Timothy Lana Lee Joan Margaret and Julie Ann are listed with weights seven pounds thirteen ounces seven pounds six ounces eight pounds fifteen ounces and six pounds eleven ounces respectively. Grandparents named for the Pensacola birth are listed.
The Black Hills Passion Play, one of the world’s oldest stage attractions, comes to Charles City High School October 15 to 18 with four evening shows and two matinees. Sponsored by the Lions Club, the 100 member cast and 22 scenes recount Jesus’s last days with camel and donkey on stage, 8 pm shows and 1:30 pm school matinees.
The last Stag Supper of the season is scheduled for Tuesday October 9 at Round Grove Golf and Country Club. Martin Senne and V K Birth serve as committee chairmen.
Butler County Farm Bureau and twenty other counties will sponsor a TV program titled Frankly Speaking with Art Rankin, KCRG Farm Director. The show airs Sundays 6:00 to 6:30 p m, began September 30 and will run 26 weeks through late March.
Catholics across the Archdiocese of Dubuque invite all faiths to visit parish churches on Sunday October 7 from 2 to 5 pm. No services will be held. the event aims to promote understanding and showcase worship spaces. Archbishop Byrne endorses the program run by Catholic Men and Women councils across 238 parishes in 30 counties.
The Butler County Tuberculosis and Health Association will start a Mantoux tuberculin testing program in all county schools on November 5. Mary Chapman RN explains the test, its meaning of negative or positive results, and the follow up with chest X rays for reactors. The free school health program is approved by the County Medical Society and funded by Christmas Seals purchases.
Douglas Marsh, son of Mr and Mrs Ralph Marsh, was crowned king at the Homecoming Dance held Friday evening at Mason City Junior College. He is a freshman student at the college.
Vern Gard the high school principal says the decision on offering adult evening classes will be delayed another week. In a homecoming clash at Nora Springs the Ramblers overpowered Riceville 33 to 7. Greene built a strong ground game led by Kingery who ran for 123 yards while Gary Weichers scored three touchdowns and added two extra points. The win featured a rugged defense and key plays from Rattler, Stauffer, and Jewell.

John Hockspier of Alta Vista faced a stop sign violation with a $500 fine and $4 costs. Conrad Lancelle charged with uttering a false check received five days in county jail. William A. Schwieson fined $10 and $4 costs for nighttime speeding. John Kneppe, 67, of All ison, was arrested in Allison on a lascivious acts with a child charge. bond set at $1,000 and posted. Ned L Bailey, 66, of Bristow also charged with the same crime. bond $1,000 posted. George Wilmot, 41, and Richard Wilmot, 21, of Clarksville pleaded guilty to assault and batter. each fined $5 plus costs. The case State of Iowa versus Craig Fisher, accusing an assault on Loren Reiher of Allison, was dismissed by Justice Blair Moffett for lack of prosecution.
Mr and Mrs Frank Cutler of Aredale have purchased the Paul Lewison residence on North 5th Street in Greene from local realtor Calvin Kelly. The Cutlers plan to move here soon.
