The Iowa Commerce Commission approved the merger of Hudson Mutual Telephone Co of Hudson with United Telephone Co of Iowa of Newton. Effective October 1, Hudson Mutual staff joined United, with Paul Degener remaining local manager. United serves about 60,000 telephones in 52 Iowa communities. Hudson serves roughly 1,200.

An intensified cattle tuberculosis eradication program is scheduled this month for a nine county area in Northeast Iowa including Butler County. Testing begins mid October with fifteen heavily infected herds identified. The effort aims to locate remaining infected animals to protect farms and farm income while ensuring milk safety through pasteurization.

Richard Fischer returned to the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Robert Fischer on Monday evening from the Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames where he underwent back surgery on Monday September 30.

The Third District American Legion and Auxiliary conference will take place in Iowa Falls on Saturday October 12 drawing over 350 delegates from Benton Blackhawk Bremer Butler Franklin Grundy Hardin Marshall Tama and Wright. The Auxiliary meets at the Methodist Church with registration at 8 30 a m and coffee. The banquet at 6 30 p m features Robert R White Davenport Department Commander and Mrs Kenneth Rhea Crawfordsville Auxiliary President.
Parents Mr. and Mrs. Daryl Barnett announce the birth of their son Dana Jon on Sunday October 6 weighing 7 pounds 14 ounces at Floyd County Memorial Hospital. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Marvin W Hobert of Charles City and Mrs. Iva Barnett of Greene.
Butler County reports September public assistance payments totaling 33,034 dollars, part of a statewide 5,467,458 dollar month. Increased costs stem from Aid to Dependent Children and Aid to the Disabled, with rising caseloads and higher average costs, while Old Age Assistance and Aid to Blind show smaller changes.
