Greene High School stage band joined three other Greene students at a Mason City clinic hosted by the North Central Iowa Bandmasters Association. The 115 piece concert band sight read new publisher materials as part of the afternoon program, with Greene members Sally Hammel Mary Worley Joyce Riggins Helen McBurney and Steve Barnett among the performers.
Five year old Barbie Jones daughter of Mr and Mrs Lloyd Jones from Lancaster California won Space Age Miss America at Hollywood Bowl event by Screen Children's Guild Agency. More than 500 youngsters competed across five age divisions. Barbie was chosen for personality and appearance. She studies for a film career with Jimmy Lloyd Drama Productions and is granddaughter of Mrs William Sylvester of Greene.
Mrs. Charles Price and Mrs. Duane Leavens came home Friday from Rochester Minnesota after Mrs. Leavens attended the Clinic there. Albert Barth returned from Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City after surgery last Tuesday. Fay Goodsell, treated at the Veterans Hospital Iowa City since September 2, went home Sunday and will return October 14 for further treatment.
Mrs. Leora Williamson reports her son H. M.3 Larry Williamson aboard the USS Independence Aircraft Carrier recently visited Naples Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius in Italy. The tour will continue to the Republic of Lebanon and the Holy Land this fall.
Greene High School hosts Homecoming Friday with a 7 45 pm football game against Nora Springs. Queen candidates Judy Bruns Vicki Brunsma Lana Cheney Joan Stauffer and Sherilyn Stuntz will be voted on Friday with the winner crowned at halftime. A Thursday pep rally bonfire snake dance and float parade precede the events. The Homecoming dance runs 10 pm to midnight with Mark V Quintet providing music.
Airman Third Class Michiel Brunsma left Sunday for Kingsley Air Force Base at Klamath Falls Oregon after a 16 day furlough at home with his parents Mr and Mrs B G Brunsma. He completed basic welding training at Chanute Air Force Base Illinois and will join the Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Kingsley Field.
Todd Mauser 13 months old, son of Mr and Mrs Roger Moser, underwent eye surgery at St Josephs Mercy Hospital in Mason City last Friday morning. He returned home Saturday morning.
The Winnebago Area Council Cub Scouts begin Scout Good Turn Day clothing drive for the handicapped at Goodwill Industries on October 5. Cubmasters will distribute bags in Greene, with bag delivery led by Cubmaster James Drake and aid from den mothers. Citizens are urged to support by placing items in bags for collection on October 12.
The Quarterback Club took thirty five Ramblers players and four coaches to Minneapolis to watch the Minnesota Vikings defeat the San Francisco 49ers 45 to 14. Seven Quarterback Club members also joined the trip.
The general meeting of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be held at the Veterans Club this evening Wednesday at 8:00 o'clock.
In Hospital Birs. O. C. Perrin is a patient in Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City undergoing treatment. Don Duffield entered the hospital in Iowa City on Wednesday September 25 for treatment. His address is Room No. C-31 at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
Rev Willis J Vander Kooi and Rev Nevin Hines announce county wide CROP drive plans in Butler County Iowa. Township chairmen and co chairmen named in Bennedette Coldwater Jackson Jefferson Fremont and Butler townships with a kickoff meeting set for October 30 at Allison to recruit workers for farm to farm corn soliciting planned during the week of November 10 depending on harvest.
Results of the annust ASCS community elections held in all townships of Butler county on Thursday, September 19, announced by Herman Stubbe, chairman of the county ASC committee. One year terms begin October 1. Newly elected committeemen include Ted DeBerg Bristow, Eral Williams Dumont, Paul Kramer Elmer Bramer Aredale, Graydon Anderson Greene, Joseph Downing Greene, etc.
The first of Iowa's two duck seasons will open at noon October 5 and run through October 13. The second season opens noon October 26 and runs to November 17 as major migrations approach. Snipe and rabbit seasons run early October with limited vegetation hampering small game hunters.
The Butler County Council of Republican Women will host a banquet October 11, 1963 at 6 30 p m in the Farm Bureau Auditorium Allison. Charles B. Weston, 88, died Sunday at the Veterans Hospital in Alhambra California. He was formerly a Greene resident over sixty years ago and was the last member of the C B Weston family. Relative Uncle D D Weston reported the death.
The Greene Commercial Club will hold its final 1963 meeting on Thursday Oct 3 at the Country Club with a 6 30 dinner. The summer and fall promotion committees will report and organize while the Christmas decorating group outlines holiday plans. Members and wives urged to attend. ticket committee includes Charles Ray Jim Drake Kenneth Jackson Dave Schroeder Mrs Clarence Saultz and Mrs Lyle Shultz.
Don McGee sustained minor injuries Thursday morning in a Barneveld Wisconsin truck crash. His loaded semi tied to Madison swerved to avoid a head on collision with an auto on the wrong side of the road. Thirty eight hogs died and the Stanton Livestock Greene owned semi trailer suffered extensive damage. McGee was hospitalized overnight.
A morning notice states knitting classes start this evening at Greene Community High School with instructor Miss Donna Thomas. Evening sessions in typing shorthand art economics and current news analysis will follow. minimum ten students per class. Lawrence W. Blum, son of Mr and Mrs Lloyd W Blum of Greene, finished 11 weeks of indoctrination at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island SC on September 12. The program covers discipline, military life, physical conditioning and infantry training including M 1 rifle use.
Promotion and Rally Day occurred at the Methodist Church on Sunday morning. Primary to junior department promotions included Raymond Truitt, Joe Shultz, Mary Jane Tefft, Ann Wegand, Maria Woodley, David Blum, and Ruth Lantz. Sunday School teachers were honored at a recognition service.
Darwin Stock of Greene charged with speeding received a $15.00 fine and $4.00 costs. Larry Bass of Cedar Falls was fined $5.00 plus $4.00 costs for a stop sign violation.
Greene Ramblers overpower Riceville 34 to 6 at homecoming. Clapham and Weichers pace the attack with multiple long runs and a 48 yard interception return. Riceville's lone score comes in the third quarter. Greene seals the win with a late touchdown and perfect extra points.
Gene Ross was admitted to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Friday afternoon for an appendectomy. He expects to return home around the middle of this week.
Butler County Fair Association elected 1963 64 officers with Herman Faber of Parkersburg as president and E W Brandt and Virgil E Shepard of Allison as vice president and treasurer. New directors include Russell Hummel and Justin Winkey, filling vacancies from H W Burma and Gomer Evans. Re-elected directors include Floyd Wessels Joan Stock Ray Hansen Elmer Hramer Donald Hagarty Harry Wilder Bill Miller J B Weires and Emmett Allan. Secretary Mrs John Brandt resigned with successor to be announced. 1964 dates July 30 31 August 1 2 set. program to be finalized within two months.
The Greene Public Library will hold Story Hour on Saturdays from 1 15 to 2 00 p m starting October 3 for children four years old and older. Attendees should enter via the side door.

Janice Krueger is former Mrs Ruby Johnson. John E Nagy Jr and wife announce son Tom John Nagy born September 26 weighing 7 pounds 1 ounce. Mary Annette Green is mother to the baby.
Mrs Edith Wright of Jacksonville Illinois arrived Friday morning for a visit at the home of her brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Arthur Pagles.
