Charles Bone of Greene High School is named a Commended student in the 1969 National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. He ranks in the top 2 percent nationwide among high school seniors expected to graduate in 1970, with 39,000 peers earning commendations.
Gary Holzschuh, 23, the son of Mr and Mrs Harold Holzschuh, was beaten and robbed by eight youths Friday night at 10 45 p m in Waterloo. Passers by found him in a Del Farm Food Store doorway on East 4th Street and alerted police. He was treated at Allen Memorial Hospital from Friday night to Sunday morning, with bruises. He said the assailants attacked him in the 700 block of East 4th Street, stealing $15 wallet and a walkie talkie radio, which police later recovered damaged.
Two more local businessmen filed for city offices ahead of the November 4 election. Lyle Mathers seeks the mayor post, joining three candidates, and his wife runs a nursing home here. Charles Stanton entered the council race along with a dozen others, for a 5 member board. Incumbent Mayor Bamk er faces Griner and Mathers. council incumbents Markle Nelson Teeple and Walker seek reelection. other contenders include Krutsinger Pooley Menninga Miller Schafer Stanton and Stewart. Gordon Anderson is not seeking reelection.
Almost 200 Iowa State University students gain practical teaching experience by teaching five weeks in elementary and secondary schools in Iowa. Clyde Grey of Greene, a senior, will teach science in the Charles City School System under the program as part of ongoing teacher preparation.

Homecoming events Friday October 10 include a 2:30 p.m. parade and 7:45 p.m. football game against Manly. Queen candidates are Melinda Dralle Nancy Kingery Linda Loomer Val Starkweather and Connie Wihim. Wendy Martzahn will crown the queen at halftime.
A district court suit filed in Allison seeks 146,822.16 dollars in damages from a September 2 Greene highway 14 crash. Plaintiff Gordon J. Schupback of Mason City names Galen Sehuknecht and Ivan L. Schnknecht as defendants. The collision involved a truck mounted corn shelter and left passenger Harry A. Neumann dead and Joseph Jones injured.

Residents of Greece receive Goodwill bags for Winnebago Council Good-Turn Drive in Waterloo. Boy Scouts collect filled bags Saturday October 11 and return them to the Goodwill shop for sorting and repair by handicapped workers.
Fire Prevention Week runs October 5 to 11 with school drills held Monday. Students heard talks on fire safety and the importance of prevention. Tonight at 6 30 p m the fire siren sounds as residents are urged to join Operation Edith in home exit drills led by Fire Chief Lowell Maxson.
Local residents are urged to donate repairable toys to Operation Toys for the Needy. Donated items will be collected at Claire Curtis Insurance Office for pickup, then transported to Charles City for restoration by seniors before free distribution to children in Charles City and surrounding communities. The program now gathers used toys from over 40 area towns for repair and distribution to needy families.

Greene Ramblers crushed Nora Springs 42 to 0 at home last Friday extending their conference lead.
