Mrs. Charles Cottrell 82 died at her daughter’s Washington home on September 26. Born March 18, 1884 in Sharon Wisconsin, she moved to Greene as a child. Survived by eight children, a brother Carl in California, four sisters, and four Kahuda siblings. Funeral at Bruce Funeral Home Fort Dodge with interment there October 3.
Clyde Grey, a Towa State University freshman in Ames, was injured when his bicycle struck a storm sewer. He was thrown, struck the curb, bruising his face and breaking all upper front teeth. He was taken to the college hospital for emergency care and will lose his teeth. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Grey of Greene.
The Butler County Selective Service Office maintains weekly hours: Monday to Thursday from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM and Friday from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM.
Parents and visitors are invited to an open house at Greene Elementary School this evening. The program by children in kindergarten through sixth starts at 7 30 p m and refreshments will be served at the close.
Butler County shows 74 percent progress toward its 1966 savings bond quota, with August sales of Series E and H reaching $87,690. Iowa as a whole posted $8,873,547 in August, up over 10 percent from August 1965, totaling $82,702,928 for eight months. County chairman John McWhirter of Allison noted the eight month county total of $605,866.
Mrs. Fred Blaas died Tuesday at Clark Nursing Home Greene after four months as a patient. Emma Kromer born August 24, 1878 in West Point Township, married Fred Blaas March 3, 1898 and lived in Greene 64 years. Survivors: husband, two sons Emil Blaas Greene and William Blaas Allison, two grandchildren, four great grandchildren. Funeral Friday October 7 at 2 PM at St. Peter's Lutheran Church with Rev. I J Deines. Burial Wilmar Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
Mrs Grace Barnhart’s son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Charles Barney of Perry Missouri report they have adopted a week old baby boy Michael Wayne Their family also includes an adopted daughter Lori Ann who turned 2 in July Mrs Barney was formerly Thelma Barnhart of Greene
Elmer F. Busse 57 died at his North Cedar home on Tuesday September 27 from a heart condition. Born September 16 1909 at Greene he married Alice Reiter in Elma on September 6 1939. They farmed near Shell Rock and later near Waterloo before retiring in 1964. He also drove for Exceptional Persons Inc. Survivors include his wife a daughter Mrs George Knoop a son Ronald a sister and a brother. Funeral Saturday at First Lutheran Church Waterloo with burial in Garden of Memories.
Mrs Albert Steere underwent surgery Friday morning at Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City. The patient's condition was not disclosed.
About fifty three Iowa high schools join a nationwide This Atomic World program by the U S Atomic Energy Commission. A 40 minute assembly leads to classroom sessions to boost atomic energy understanding. Oak Ridge Associated Universities runs other Midwest showings in Ohio and Michigan. Greene Community High School hosts the event on Friday October 28.
Mr and Mrs Maurice OBrien announce the birth of a daughter on Thursday September 29 at Floyd County Veterans City. The infant weighed 8 pounds 1 ounce and is named Lori Ellen.
Mr and Mrs Keith Walker of Charles City welcomed premature twin sons born September 26 at a Riceville hospital. Bruce weighed 3 pounds 5 ounces and Brian 2 pounds 14 ounces. They were transferred to Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City and placed in incubators. The twins are grandsons of Mr and Mrs Douglas Walker of Greene.
Iowa State Highway Commission will accept bids October 11 in Ames for two Butler County bypass projects on Iowa 3 near Shell Rock and Iowa 14 near Greene. Projects include realignment, 5.1 miles on Iowa 3 with 24 foot pavement and 30 foot bridges, and relocation on Iowa 14 with safety and paving phases. Traffic counts from 1965 show 1,410 to 3,069 vehicles daily. past accident records indicate several injuries and property damages.
Mrs Henry Bruns 60 of Clarksville died October 1 at St Josephs Mercy Hospital Waverly after a lingering illness. Former Greene County residents, she left behind three daughters Betty McGowan of Tucson Arizona Dorothy Wedeking of Clarksville and Jean Henning of Clarksville six grandchildren five brothers Charles Bohner George Robert Harold and Sebert and three sisters. Funeral held Tuesday at 2:00 PM at the Community Church in Clarksville.
Norman R. Graven of Greene is named Butler County Chairman of Young Iowans For Miller, a statewide youth campaign supporting Senator Jack Miller. Appointed by Mrs. John Platt Jr., the group will organize in every county and engage locally, with Des Moines leader George A. Wilson praising the energetic youth support for Miller’s re-election.
Hugh S. Mosher 82 of Allison died September 29 at Chautauqua Nursing Home Charles City. He served 30 years as Butler County Clerk of Court and held various posts from rural mail carrier to railroad clerk. Survivors include wife Clara a daughter Merna McDaniel son Charles and six grandchildren. Funeral at United Church of Christ Allison with burial there.
The October 1966 term of Butler County District Court opens October 26 with Judge B C Sullivan of Rockford presiding. Trial jurors will report November 14 at 10:00 a m. The jury list by township, announced by Clerk Walter W. Wilhelm, includes residents from Albion, Beaver, Bennedette, Butler, Coldwater, Fremont, Jackson, Madison, Monroe, Pittsford, Ripley, Shell Rock, Washington and West Point townships.
Secretary of the interior Steward Udall announced a 7500 grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund to Iowa to acquire 14 acres as an addition to Beeds Lake State Park in Franklin County. The state will match the grant to complete the acquisition. Beeds Lake State Park serves picnicking camping swimming boating and fishing with attendance up sharply over the past five years.
A county wide Career Night for high school students in Butler and Franklin Counties will be at Allison Bristow High School on Wednesday evening October 12 at 7 30. Dr Ray Bryan head of the Department of Education Iowa State University Ames will give a keynote You In Future. Students and parents may attend two career sessions with professionals in fields ranging from Agricultural Equipment Technology to Teaching. Kay Connelly and Guy Olson oversee arrangements.

In 1966 the Office of Economic Opportunity funded the North Iowa Community Action Organization to serve Cerro Gordo Franklin Butler Worth Floyd Winnebago Mitchell and Hancock. Beginning October 11 1966 the group conducts a required fact finding survey in education health and employment needs to inform corrective projects.

Arthur Martzahn was taken to City Sunday where he underwent surgery Tuesday morning. He remains under medical care as doctors evaluate his condition and plan further treatment.
