Army Private Merlin D. Schuknecht 19, son of Mr and Mrs Elwin H Schuknecht of Greene, completed a field communication crewman course at Ft Leonard Wood Missouri on September 15. Training covered wiring from field to the communication center, basic electricity switchboard installation and operation and pole climbing.
Mrs. Josephine Elliott Belle 90, formerly Josephine Markle of Greene, died Sunday morning at a Sioux City hospital. Survived by three children Mrs. Richard Sparke of Sioux City and John and Joe of Spokane, Washington. Husbands Leon Elliott and John Belle and daughter Elsie predeceased her. Funeral and burial in Sioux City.
On Saturday October 1 Greene celebrates 26 years of Barth family Chevrolet sales and service. Harry Barth started in October 26 years ago with Darrel joining 19 years ago and Charlotte 15 years ago. Longtime staff include Chick Starkweather 25 years and Ralph Litterer 16 years. An open house September 29 will coincide with the new 1967 Chevrolets display, with free coffee donuts and four door prizes drawn at 8:30 PM, no attendance required to win.
Norman P. Graven attended a Newton Estate Planning Institute on September 21 presented by the Jasper County Bar Association. Joseph W. Price 111 of Philadelphia, a noted national authority on estate planning, headlined the session. Lawyers from across Iowa attended to hear about recent developments in the field.
Butler County Republicans announce a county wide Rally Day on October 20 with a 6:30 p.m. fundraising dinner at the Boyd Building in Shell Rock. Tickets priced at $5. The caravan visits Allison, Clarksville, Greene, Aredale, Bristow, Dumont, Kesley, Austinville, Parkersburg, New Hartford, and Shell Rock, featuring major candidates including U.S. Senator Jack Miller and Representative Charles Grassley.
Myron Nelson began work September 21 at Interstate Power Company in Greene, after transferring from Elma. A Line, South Dakota native and Navy electrician, he previously worked for Los Angeles Power Company and the REA in South Dakota. He and his wife Helen have three children Andy 7 Steve 4 and Karen 18 months, and have moved into 210 West Traer Street. The family attends the Lutheran Church.
Clinton Lockwood returned home Wednesday from Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City after a four week surgical stay.
An open house will be held at the elementary school on Wednesday evening October 5 at 7 30. All parents and visitors are invited. Coffee and donuts will be served. Children from kindergarten through sixth grade will present a program and parents may meet their child's teacher.
Steve Hildebrand son of Mr and Mrs Dale Hildebrand showed two head of Brown Swiss at the 4 H show during the Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo. He received blue ribbons for a Brown Swiss heifer calf and a two year old.
Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Frudden suffered facial lacerations and a leg cut after their car rear ended a Greene Rendering truck driven by Merle Krueger as the truck turned from the viaduct onto the road near Glen Shaffer property and Elassi Motors. Krueger and the truck were unharmed. The crash occurred about 5 30 p.m. Thursday at the city limits north edge.
Scoutmaster Henry Smeins and the Boy Scouts will finish the annual Good Turn Day Clothing Drive for Goodwill Industries this Saturday October 1. Bags and boxes from Greene homes will be collected and taken to a central station for pickup by the Goodwill truck next week. Residents should place filled bags on the front step by 8:30 a.m. Saturday as doorbells will not be rung. If a home was missed last week, place clothing in boxes ready for pickup by a Scout.
Pvt Francis Menken arrives home Sunday September 18 from Fort Bliss Texas for furlough at his parents home Mr and Mrs John Menken. He is a member of Hamilton College Mason City graduating class and completed junior and senior machine courses before service. He will report to Fort Dix New Jersey on October 1.
The 1967 Chevrolets Buicks and Fords will be displayed for the first time this week end Earth Chevrolet Inc will be showing the 1967 Chevrolets on Thursday Starkweather garage will display the new 67 Buicks on Thursday and Klassi Motors will be showing the new Fords on Friday
Cedar Rapids based Bar Association President David M. Elderkin announces appointments to several committees. Included is James H. Graven named to the grievance committee.
County corn price support loan rate set at 93 cents by Kenneth E. Hart ASC County Committee chair. Based on a 1966 national average loan rate of $1.00 per bushel. Total Butler County support $1.23, up 4 cents from 1965. 1966 payments include 20 cents per bushel on top of the loan rate, with limits for up to 50 percent of a grower’s feed grain base. Loans mature July 31, 1987 unless demand arises sooner.
A church supper is set at St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Thursday evening September 29 serving begins at 5 00 p m local time with proceeds aiding church activities and programs.
The NIAD Culture Committee met September 20 with reps from Winnebago Worth Mitchell Cerro Gordo Hancock Wright Franklin and Butler Counties. They noted existing culture in WMAD but called for greater development especially in visual arts. Frank Jeffrey said Mason City Art Museum attracted 20 000 visitors with about 2000 monthly. The North Iowa Chorus under Adrian Johnson Waldorf was praised. Women’s clubs sponsor cultural events and education. The group plans to meet the third Monday monthly, next October 17.
The Greene Public Library will resume Story Hour next Saturday October 10 from 1 15 to 2 00 p m. Children four years old and older are welcome. Mrs Robert Fischer leads the session using stories and poems. Children should enter through the side door.
Keith E. Myers of Grundy County announced the organization of the Farmers For Gross Committee to back Congressman H. R. Gross in Iowa's Third District. The group, active in 16 counties, vows a working, local campaign to counter a liberal Democrat opponent and defend Gross's farming friendly voting record.
Florian Rutz underwent surgery last Wednesday at the Floyd Hospital in Charles City. The brief health notice confirms a surgical procedure and location.
Three area counselors joined 37 Iowa colleagues on a three day Blue and Gold program at Annapolis. The group flew from Waterloo to Andrews AFB, toured the academy, met department heads, attended briefings, and saw Washington D C sites before returning home.

Greene Ramblers dominated Riceville 40 to 7, scoring four quarters after a scoreless start. Jeff Drake led with a 29 yard reception TD and two rushing scores, while captain Clark Allen added a tackle eligible TD and strong play on both sides. Riceville’s lone score came late as reserves closed strong.
New resident Mr. and Mrs. Don Clikeman welcomed a son born Thursday September 22 at Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City. The infant weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces and is named Bret Don. Grandparents are Ivan Clikeman Greene and Roy Beck New Hampton. Great-grandparents are Mitchell Doty Clarksville and Emma Rabe New Hampton.
Farmers who diverted acreage under the 1966 feed grain and wheat programs may graze this land starting October 1 without losing benefits. Kenneth E. Hart, Chairman of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation County Committee, announced the six month no grazing period ends then. Hay remains prohibited and Conservation Reserve land cannot be estated or harvested. About 1380 butter farms participate in the 1966 diversion program.
A Social Security Administration representative from the Waterloo district office will visit Allison Court House on October 5 19 and 26 from 9 00 to 11 00 am.
