Editor notes on duck hunting at Big Marsh with water diversion to shape the marsh for opening day. Also a casual shift to 1961 car talk, a plea for courtesy, a cheeky comment on bomb shelters, and school Chit Chat absence before next Recorder edition.
The state wide School of Instruction for County Officers will be held in Des Moines on October 6 7 and 8. The Butler County Courthouse will close Friday and Saturday October 7 and 8 to enable County Officers and deputies to attend the school.
The Rambier sophomores lost to Mason City Monroe freshmen 12 to 7 on Monday. Gary Weichers scored a touchdown on a run. The sophomores meet Allison's B squad next Monday at 4:00 at Allison.
The Chris Barber Band, a leading European jazz ensemble, will perform Friday at 8:00 p.m. in Wartburg College Chapel 4 Auditorium. The seven member group recently visited en route to Hollywood for the Look Back in Anger soundtrack and their Petite Fleur record has sold over two million copies in the U.S. and Europe, earning gold in both regions.
Louis Marzen and his wife were bitten by a dog with rabies at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. Louis received treatment after effects of hydrophobia and was dismissed after recovery. Mrs Marzen was bitten but did not require hospitalization following treatment.
Missionaries from Puerto Rico and India will headline an eight-county gathering at Ackley Methodist Church on Sunday October 9 with talks at 415 PM and 800 PM. Revs. Ross Bunce of Moradabad India and Donald Campbell formerly in Puerto Rico will speak, with a 600 PM dinner. Counties represented include Butler Benton Black Hawk Bremer Grundy Hardin Marshall and Tama.
New laws change how farm leases in Iowa can be ended. Notices must be sent by restricted certified mail to all signers at their last known addresses, 10 days before November 1. Delivery must show a receipt with date, place, and recipient. Other notice methods remain valid.
A Social Security Administration representative will be at Allison Court House on October 10 and 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to assist with applications for old age survivors or disability insurance benefits, social security number cards, and employer identification numbers. Call the Waterloo district office at Adams 4-1554 for details.
Winners of Greene Bucks listed include Mrs Archie Raymond Mrs H F Rover Mrs Bob Smith Joyce Shultz Letha Groothuis Harold Schafer Lena Busse George Peters Al Moore and Mrs Bernard Frascht each paid five dollars and Noma Backer ten dollars at the drawing on Saturday night.
Mrs. Ruluff Packard, 82, died September 17 in Corning California. Formerly Mable Crouse of Greene, she survived by her husband and one daughter Helen. A sister, Mrs. Florence Sproul, also died recently.
Greene F F A boys won emblems at the National Dairy Cattle Congress in Waterloo. Mike Jewell Gary Stauffer Harlan Martzahn and Richard Wagoner attended on October 1st. Jewell Stauffer and Schrage represented Greene in the F F A Daily Judging Contest. Forty teams earned gold emblem while Greene took silver. others won bronze and honorable mentions. Members and instructors attended a John Deere sponsored banquet in Waterloo that evening.
Friday afternoon about 1 30 firefighters responded when a stove pipe fell in the kitchen filling the room with smoke and a fire had just started in the stove creating danger of a blaze.
Jim Nixt, son of Mr and Mrs Peter Nixt, left Friday for San Antonio Texas to resume Army training at Fort Sam Houston after spending a two week furlough with his Greene family.
Girl Scout Troop 265 met at the Youth Center and elected officers: President Barbara Barth, Vice-President Ann Rottler, Secretary Mary Ellen Worley, Treasurer Bonnie Merfeld, and Sergeant-at-arms Pamela Drakle. The group planned an outdoor cook-out for October 10 with each girl bringing food and a beverage. dessert supplied by the troop. Attendees, led by Mrs Jim Drakle, sang, and the meeting closed with a friendship circle and Taps.
Charles H. Burma former Butler County Auditor and local insurance man was named chairperson of the Nixon Lodge volunteers for Butler County. He will choose a co-chairman soon. Burma, born in Butler County, is married with three children and joins civic leaders in backing Nixon and Lodge to elect a president capable of global leadership.
Sally Bartels daughter of Mr and Mrs Oscar Bartels will undergo knee surgery Thursday morning at Scholtz hospital in Waterloo.
Harry Earth announced the 1961 Chevrolet line will be on display this Friday October 7 at Greene Motor Co. Everyone is invited to inspect the new models with refreshments served. The preview follows Ford line premier last Thursday at Klassi Motors and Buick display at Starkweather Garage today.
The Rambler junior high football team won 20 to 7 at Rudd last Wednesday. Steve Clapham ran for 35 and 6 yards to score, Roger Weichers added a 4 yard TD, with Ronald Stewart and Francis Menken kicking extra points.
Next Tuesday October 11 Greene will host Riceville Junior High. The game starts at 4:00 PM and the public is invited free of charge.
Mrs J Broadston, mother-in-law of Mrs Ben Broadston, died Sunday in Montezuma. Funeral services are being held there this afternoon.
Greene Ramblers defense shuts Nora Springs to 7 as Steve Rottler gains 121 yards and key plays set up two Greene touchdowns. The win keeps Greene unbeaten in conference standings and sets up a road game at Manly this Friday to face North Central with homecoming implications for Oct 14.
Dr. J T Truitt was elected director for the northern district at the Iowa Chiropractors Association annual convention in Des Moines. Mrs J T Truitt was chosen vice president of the Ladies Auxiliary to the association.
The Butler County Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold its regular meeting on Monday October 10 1960 at 8 00 p m in City Hall Allison Iowa.

Congressman H R Gross of Waterloo led a perfect attendance and voting record in the 86th Congress. The House records show 176 roll calls in 1959 and 206 in the current year with only 13 of 437 members present for all roll calls.
Promotion Sunday observed in the Methodist Church with eight receiving Revised Standard Version Bibles for promotion to the junior department. Named promotees are Shirley Allan Donna Gersema Wendy Martzahn Jimmy Shultz Diane Steere Wendell Stuniz Tommy Truitt and Dan Weyand. Their promotion makes them eligible for the junior choir, which will practice on Thursday October 6 at 4:00 p.m. at the church.
The Youth Center sponsors a hay ride on Saturday at 7 30 p m at railroad park ending at 9 30 p m. Afterward the group returns to the Youth Center for refreshments and dancing. Anyone able to loan a hay rack wagon or a tractor should contact Bob Shultz promptly.
The Parent Teachers Association will meet this evening, Wednesday, at 8:00 in the school auditorium. A reception for the teachers will follow the meeting.
Airman Ruffridge at Castle Air Force Base California and his wife welcome a daughter named Shelley Renee born Thursday September 29 at Park Hospital Mason City weighing 8 pounds 3 ounces. Parents are Air Force family living in California.
The annual Good Turn Day Clothing Drive is postponed one week from October 15 to October 22. Cub Scouts will deliver goodwill bags on Saturday October 15 and the Boy Scouts will pick them up the following Saturday.
The board of Investors Mutual Inc declared a regular quarterly dividend of 914 cents per share from investment income and a 73 cent per share distribution from realized security profits. A total of 17 cents per share is payable September 30 to shareholders of record September 29, 1960. This marks the 80th consecutive quarterly dividend. Investors Mutual, Inc. has about 148,800,000 shares outstanding, up from 138,564,746 at the end of the prior fiscal year.
