Iowa Officials oppose guard plane tour and plate slogan
Secretary of State Melvin Synhorst criticizes Governor Erbe for plans to use an Iowa national guard airplane to tour state mental and penal institutions. Synhorst and State Treasurer Abrahamson decline to ride, citing policy and costs, while Erbe says the trip is legal and economical. Plans for a 1963 Hawkeye State slogan on plates are dropped due to lack of statutory authority. 1963 plates will use white on black.
