A meeting to organize a Greene Historical Society is set for Thursday October 4 at 7 30 p m in City Hall. Residents interested in preserving Greene history and culture are urged to attend as the community nears its centennial year 1978 and an area has been offered to serve as a museum for historic articles.
Area students joined 194 graduates from Hawkeye Institute of Technology's 16 programs on Sept. 21. Named graduates include Paulette Shultz of Greene in architectural drafting, Ene Wedeking of Clarksville in auto body, James Kramer of Allison in auto parts management, Randy Busching of Clarksville in industrial service technician, Mario Neal of Clarksville in practical nursing, and Stanley Hewitt of Bristow in auto mechanics.
Beginning this week the public library observes new hours Mon Wed Fri 1 p.m. to 3 30 p.m. Sat 9 a.m. to 11 30 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. Children’s story hour starts at 1 15 p.m. Saturdays so doors close to the public until 2 p.m. The summer reading program The Wise Old Owl drew 44 readers who completed 516 books with Gina Gambaiani at 48, Grace Tinderholt 47, Toby Richards 41, Todd Richards 39, Jon Grice 33, Lisa Schafer Marilyn Barth Beth Ann Hardy 28 each. Coming reviews on new books soon.
The Goodwill truck will be in Greene on Tuesday October 9 to collect discarded clothing toys shoes and small household articles for Goodwill Industries. Bring items to United Methodist Church basement by Monday the day before. Handicapped workers will repurpose these items to help themselves.
The Greene Public Library will hold a weekly Story Hour every Saturday starting this Saturday October 6 at 1 15 pm led by Story Lady Mrs Dennis Wunsch. Children should enter through the side door. A bake sale and bazaar with lunch and coffee will follow at the United Methodist Church from 9 am to 1 30 pm this Saturday.
Graveside services for Mrs Ralph (Nettie) Beal 80 of Greene were conducted at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev. Howard Dukelow officiating. Born March 18, 1893 in Ontario New York to Jacob and Sarah Finch, she is survived by husband Ralph two sons Benjamin Indio California John Kings Beach California a daughter Faith three grandchildren and three sisters.

James Bernau of Charles City won the Grand Champion Market hog at the Butler County Fall Market Hog Show held in Greece on Sept 15. The novice class premiered, with top finishers including Brian Niehaus and Jim Knapp. Divisional winners featured lightweight, heavy, and carcass prizes, judged by Rex Boatman of Rath Packing Co.
Fire Chief Francis Teeple emphasizes escape first in home fires and urges preplanning and drills. NFPA studies link most 6500 U.S. home fire deaths to lack of practice, so families should map at least two exit routes per room, keep doors closed, use roofs or trees for upper-floor escape, designate a meeting point, and know how to call the fire department quickly.
The Greene Community Elementary School will host an Open House this evening Wednesday October 3 starting at 7 30 PM. Parents may tour classrooms meet teachers and refreshments will follow the visits.
Services for Mrs. Jens Marina Petersen 81 of Greene were held October 1 at St Peter's Lutheran Church in Greene with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery. Rev J F Wipperman officiated. Petersen died September 26 in Downey California while staying with her daughter. Surviving: son Don of Muscatine three daughters Dorothy Kock of Downey Lucie Sampson of Middletown Ohio and Marian Renken of Manson 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren one sister Johanna Jensen Milltown Wisconsin and two brothers Fred and Abild Jenssen of Frederick Wisconsin.
Greene Ramblers spoil Rockwell-Swaledale's first home game, earning the Rams first win as Rockwell's offense struggles. Coach Larry Helmers lauds a stout defense limiting Rockwell to 30 yards past the 30 and 3 completions for 38 yards. Offensive line openings praised. Homecoming versus Riceville eyed as tough.
Five candidates are listed for GHS Homecoming Queen: Nancy Miller Deb O'Brien Susan Miller Mishelle Wust and Janis Shultz. Events begin with a Thursday pep rally at 7 30 p m a parade at 2 p m through town a 7 30 p m football game versus Riceville and queen coronation at halftime followed by a 9 30 p m to 12 30 a m dance with no parade floats this year and class float themes decorating cafeteria windows posters and other spirit activities.
The Greene City Council held its regular meeting with Mayor Arthur Weiss and six councilmen present. They adopted the 1974 75 budget, dispensed with three readings for ordinances 280 and 281, and approved several building permits. They authorized inclusion of Greene in a Chickasaw Ambulance contract for 1974, set the mayor and fire chief stipends and council pay, renewed a beer license, approved water and sewer analyses, and approved paying general and public safety bills.
At a Board of Directors meeting First State Bank Greene announces Janice Kingery promoted to Cashier and John Dale Barth named Assistant Cashier. Kingery joined as bookkeeper after Greene High School graduation in 1959 and became assistant cashier in 1966. Barth joined in 1972 as bookkeeper after graduating Waldorf College in 1969 and attending Mankato State College. Both active in local churches and community groups. Kingery treasurer of Church of the Brethren and Barth member of St Peters Lutheran Church and the Greene Jaycees. Barth married to Carol Casanova with one son Jamie.
