The fifty first annual Christmas Seal sale began as town and township chairmen mailed about 9 000 letters to Butler county residents. Donors are urged to purchase many seals and mail the return envelope promptly to aid chairmen and ensure letters are not lost. Funds support tuberculosis research, x ray surveys, health education, and rehabilitation, with Fern Stauffer as town chairman and Mrs Erik Anderson chairing Coldwater township.
Mr and Mrs Edwin Scheer of near Greene have purchased the Arthur Waltmann farm at Wykoff Minnesota from Calvin Kelly. The Scheers and their family expect to move to the new home around March 1 1958.
Dr D T Drees and his wife Janet Hoben will move from Mount Pleasant to Greene on December 1. He will begin veterinary practice with Dr J P Hoben, joining the Hoben family practice. Drees, a 1957 graduate of Iowa State College, has practiced in Mount Pleasant since graduation.
Union Thanksgiving services are set for tonight at 8:00 at the Church of the Brethren. Rev. G. Butler of First Presbyterian Church will deliver the sermon. The public is cordially invited to attend.
The Greene Recorder will print the Christmas Shopping Guide on Wednesday December 4. Sample copies will be mailed to everyone in this area. Any interested in placing an ad should have copy in the office as soon as possible.
Greene County Boy Scouts announce their annual Christmas tree sale. Trees grown on the hillside overlooking the Shell Rock River have been planted and cared for by the scouts over several years. Customers may pick their own or have the scouts select one, with delivery arranged by Tom Albrecht to support the scouting program.
December 3 starting at noon a fish fry will be served in the Farm Bureau Auditorium for members who will work on the 1958 membership drive. Dale Nelson IA Farm Bureau Federation director will speak, with Walt Willson chairing. A New Idea All-Purpose wagon will be awarded to a dues paid member.
Marjorie and Dorthy Thomas, daughters of Ira and Mrs Thomas, left Minneapolis Friday night November 22 by plane for Homer Alaska. They were honored at a farewell party at Minnesota Bible College. The sisters are connected with the Alaska Christian Home for homeless children in Homer and expect to serve there for three years, with mail to be sent care of the Alaska Christian Home Star Route Homer Alaska.
The Handicraft Department of the Woman's Club, originally set for 2:00 p m today at Mrs. M K Sperry's home, has been postponed to 3:00 p m.
Greene Community High School students Jann Fletcher Sally Bartels and Jackie Marsh spoke on KRIB Mason City on Tuesday November 26 at 415 p m. The trio represented Greene in the 24th annual high school radio Speaking Program for the 51st Annual Christmas Seal campaign aiding tuberculosis education and control in Butler County and Iowa.
Deborah Landers five daughter of Mr and Mrs Wilbur Landers underwent surgery at Cedar Valley hospital in Charles City Monday morning.
Clarence P. Witwer 51 died in St Marys hospital Rochester Minnesota from burns suffered when the Standard Oil truck he drove lost control near Clarksville Friday November 15 He was born in Ottawa Iowa October 14 1906 He served in the US Navy 1942 1945 and held a 20 year pin with Standard Oil Funeral services set for 2:00 PM at Williams Mortuary Rose Hill Cemetery Greene Iowa He is survived by his widow Helen Hardman a son Richard two daughters Mrs Gerald Stalin and Jane two sisters and two grandsons
Winnebago Council and Boy Scouts completed the Good Turn Day clothing drive for Goodwill Industries. Totals include 443 bags returned from Greene, 167 percent in St Ansgar, and 13 971 filled bags collected after rain with seven semi trucks needed to move 13 791 bags to the Sioux City plant. Disabilities avoided with full time winter work for handicapped at Goodwill.
The Internal Revenue Service announces that the 1957 edition of the Farmers Tax Guide will be available to the public during December. The free publication may be obtained from local IRS offices and county extension offices. The Guide explains in plain nontechnical language most income tax rules that concern farmers.
Mr and Mrs Lowell McGee greet daughter Debra Jo born Thursday November 21 at Cedar Valley hospital Charles City weighing 7 pounds 13 ounces. Mr and Mrs Richard Witwer welcome a son born Tuesday evening at Cedar Valley hospital Charles City weighing 8 pounds 1 1/2 ounces.
Cecil Starkweather announced that during snow cleanup everyone should park off the street. Streets will be cleaned faster and more efficiently if Greene citizens follow these instructions.
The Atomic Energy Commission approved development of the first midwest atomic power plant, named Pathfinder, to be built northeast of Sioux Falls on the Big Sioux River. The 66,000 kw facility will be developed by Central Utilities Atomic Power Associates led by Interstate Power and NSP funding, with licensing and site approval pending.
A Social Security Administration district representative will be at the Allison Court House on December 4 and December 18, 1957 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon to assist residents in filing applications for Old-Age Survivors and Disability Insurance payments.
Dr. John B. Herrick of Iowa State College Ames spoke at the Greere Community School meeting on Beef Cattle Diseases and Ailments. Thirty attended with Drs. Toben and Andrews assisting. Wives hosted an oyster supper. Next meeting set for Tuesday December 38 at Greene Community School with Dale O Hull to discuss Farm Use of Oils and Lubricants.
The Butler County Conservation Board plans two new parks. One near Shell Rock west of Shell Rock on Highway No. 1 includes a small lake and river access, with land donated by Mr and Mrs Thompson and purchases from Mr and Mrs McInroy and Mr and Mrs Frank Bowen. The second twelve acre site sits southeast of Dumont on Lake Candidine with improvements similar to the Shell Rock park. Fireplaces and picnic tables will be added at both sites and Hi Way Park in Allison will receive two fire places and two tables. The board meets monthly at Allison Court House and invites public suggestions.
Greene stores will close all day Thursday November 28 to observe the Thanksgiving holiday.
The annual Corn Bowl Conference banquet was held recently in Nora Springs. The Greene Ramblers ranked second with 4 wins and 2 losses. Nashua was the conference champion with 5 wins and a tie. Riceville placed third with 3 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties. Rockford was fourth with 3 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie. SL Ansgar fifth with 2 wins and 3 losses. Nora Springs sixth with 1 win and 5 losses. Manly had 5 losses. Four Ramblers made the All Conference roster led by guard Roger Schuknecht and backs Jim Brinkman and Jack Hagarty. Ends included Dick Hynes and Charles Neidert. Tackles Art McGovern and Dennis Parker. Guards Merlin Christensen, Lenos Connor, and others listed. Center Faber Miller was also named.
A skating party will be held Saturday November 30 at 7 00 PM at the Clarksville skating rink. The Dayton Busy Gophers 4-H Club sponsors the event and invites all residents to attend.
Home economics students in Greene Community School join national Homemaker of Tomorrow day on December 3. Ina Nichol guides the program as 11,800 high schools participate in a 60 minute test to pick state and national winners. Scholarships totaling 106,900 dollars are offered by General Mills with awards of 1,500 and 500 dollars for top state runners up.
The Chicasaw County court in New Hampton dismissed the case involving Hubert Girard and Harry Barth. Barth is fully exonerated of all charges, with the proceedings marking a formal end to the matter.
The Navy unveils a Nurse Candidate Program offering selected senior college nurses an opportunity to join the Navy while finishing their degree. Ensigns in the Nurse Corps will be commissioned after graduation with a two year active duty obligation. Applicants aged 20 to 33 at graduation may apply through the Omaha Nebraska Navy Recruiting Office.
Election yields 5 directors and a treasurer in Greene Community School District. Harry Ott 93 votes beat Will Debner. August Backer 137 over --. Walter Gabe 88 over John Pyatt. Dr Bruce Andersen 77 over Francis Brinkman. Elmer Bramer 110 over Galen Shultz. Verle Barth elected treasurer with 126 votes. four spoiled ballots, two write ins. Turnout about 151 of 1,300 eligible voters.
The Greene Community School will dismiss at 3 45 today for the Thanksgiving vacation and will resume on Monday December 2.
Iowans bought 39,395,914 in United States savings bonds in October an increase of 793,000 from September. Ten month totals reach 113,409,364 placing Iowa at 79 percent of its quota while the national average is 76 percent. Butler county residents contributed 53,585 in October raising the 10 month total to 804,548 for 64 percent of the 948,352 annual goal.
The American Legion Auxiliary collects Butternut coffee strips to provide gifts for children in an orphan's home. Drop off at Buchholz and Drakle B and W Morey's West Side Grocery or the Greene Recorder Office by December 10.
