Christmas Seals Mailed Recently

The fifty first annual Christmas Seal sale began as town and township chairmen mailed about 9 000 letters to Butler county residents. Donors are urged to purchase many seals and mail the return envelope promptly to aid chairmen and ensure letters are not lost. Funds support tuberculosis research, x ray surveys, health education, and rehabilitation, with Fern Stauffer as town chairman and Mrs Erik Anderson chairing Coldwater township.

Dr D T Drees to Practice Veterinary Medicine in Greene

Dr D T Drees and his wife Janet Hoben will move from Mount Pleasant to Greene on December 1. He will begin veterinary practice with Dr J P Hoben, joining the Hoben family practice. Drees, a 1957 graduate of Iowa State College, has practiced in Mount Pleasant since graduation.

Boy Scouts Sell Christmas Trees Grown by Scouts

Greene County Boy Scouts announce their annual Christmas tree sale. Trees grown on the hillside overlooking the Shell Rock River have been planted and cared for by the scouts over several years. Customers may pick their own or have the scouts select one, with delivery arranged by Tom Albrecht to support the scouting program.

Thomas Sisters Teach In Alaska

Marjorie and Dorthy Thomas, daughters of Ira and Mrs Thomas, left Minneapolis Friday night November 22 by plane for Homer Alaska. They were honored at a farewell party at Minnesota Bible College. The sisters are connected with the Alaska Christian Home for homeless children in Homer and expect to serve there for three years, with mail to be sent care of the Alaska Christian Home Star Route Homer Alaska.

Boy Scout Clothing Drive Totals Reach Record Bags

Winnebago Council and Boy Scouts completed the Good Turn Day clothing drive for Goodwill Industries. Totals include 443 bags returned from Greene, 167 percent in St Ansgar, and 13 971 filled bags collected after rain with seven semi trucks needed to move 13 791 bags to the Sioux City plant. Disabilities avoided with full time winter work for handicapped at Goodwill.

The Internal Revenue Service announces that the 1957 edition of the Farmers Tax Guide will be available to the public during December. The free publication may be obtained from local IRS offices and county extension offices. The Guide explains in plain nontechnical language most income tax rules that concern farmers.

Pathfinder to Bring Midwest Atomic Plant Development

The Atomic Energy Commission approved development of the first midwest atomic power plant, named Pathfinder, to be built northeast of Sioux Falls on the Big Sioux River. The 66,000 kw facility will be developed by Central Utilities Atomic Power Associates led by Interstate Power and NSP funding, with licensing and site approval pending.

Butler County to Have Two New Parks

The Butler County Conservation Board plans two new parks. One near Shell Rock west of Shell Rock on Highway No. 1 includes a small lake and river access, with land donated by Mr and Mrs Thompson and purchases from Mr and Mrs McInroy and Mr and Mrs Frank Bowen. The second twelve acre site sits southeast of Dumont on Lake Candidine with improvements similar to the Shell Rock park. Fireplaces and picnic tables will be added at both sites and Hi Way Park in Allison will receive two fire places and two tables. The board meets monthly at Allison Court House and invites public suggestions.

The annual Corn Bowl Conference banquet was held recently in Nora Springs. The Greene Ramblers ranked second with 4 wins and 2 losses. Nashua was the conference champion with 5 wins and a tie. Riceville placed third with 3 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties. Rockford was fourth with 3 wins, 2 losses and 1 tie. SL Ansgar fifth with 2 wins and 3 losses. Nora Springs sixth with 1 win and 5 losses. Manly had 5 losses. Four Ramblers made the All Conference roster led by guard Roger Schuknecht and backs Jim Brinkman and Jack Hagarty. Ends included Dick Hynes and Charles Neidert. Ina Nichol guides the program as 11,800 high schools participate in a 60 minute test to pick state and national winners. Scholarships totaling 106,900 dollars are offered by General Mills with awards of 1,500 and 500 dollars for top state runners up.

Election yields 5 directors and a treasurer in Greene Community School District. Harry Ott 93 votes beat Will Debner. August Backer 137 over --. Walter Gabe 88 over John Pyatt. County Bonds Drive Reaches 64 Percent Of 1957 Goal

Iowans bought 39,395,914 in United States savings bonds in October an increase of 793,000 from September. Ten month totals reach 113,409,364 placing Iowa at 79 percent of its quota while the national average is 76 percent. Butler county residents contributed 53,585 in October raising the 10 month total to 804,548 for 64 percent of the 948,352 annual goal.
