Local Matmen Open Season with Loss to Riceville

Coach Max Dougherty's wrestling team fell 24 to 17 at Riceville last Friday. Duane Fox and James Henderson earned pins for Riceville. Ramblers led 14 to 8 before two late pins decided the meet. Reserve results kept it close until two forfeits, giving Riceville a 23 to 22 win. Next stop Nashua next Tuesday.

Lawrence Staudt 63 Dies After Illness in Marble Rock

Lawrence Jacob Staudt, 63, lifelong Marble Rock resident, died Sunday morning in Charles City after a two month illness. Born May 21 1902 near Marble Rock to Nick and Margaret Reis Staudt, he attended Roseville School. Survivors include brothers Stephen of Rockford and Mark of Marble Rock along with eleven nieces and nephews. Requiem High Mass was held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St Marys Catholic Church Roseville, Rev. A P White officiating. Burial followed in St Marys Cemetery Roseville.

Former resident dies in California after Denver illness

Chester Elgin, about 75, formerly of Greene, died October 24 following surgery in Denver. He married Harriet Taras in Greene in 1912 and after a long line of family passes, survived by Grazia Barnes, five children Ross Robert Wanda Jettibel and Jack, a sister Bertha Isom of Denver and brother Charles in California. Burial was in Denver.

Anna Louise Kohlhaass Kyle 88 died at home in Greene after a lingering illness. Born January 9 1877 at Wilmar, she married Joseph Kyle in 1909 and farmed before moving to Greene in 1924. A group of local swine producers met to plan forming the Butler County Swine Producers Association. Warren Severs heads the temporary board with Niehaus of Clarksville, Raymond Granvy of Bristow, and an Aredale representative. The Ramblerettes defeated Riceville 83 to 54 in a Corn Bowl Conference game led by Ann Roitler with 33 points and Peggy Willer with 23 as Flora Stubbe and Kristy Moore anchored defense.
