Local basketball fans recall Riceville opener where both boys and girls teams won in a double victory. The note reflects on friendship, community spirit, and a wish to join a Christmas Savings Club last year. It also laments government focus on protocol over cold war problems.
The Community Service Committee seeks applicants for the Supervisor of Summer Playground. Interviews will occur during Christmas holidays. Send letters to Mrs. B V Andersen, president of the Greene Woman's Club. The six week position runs June and July 1962.
The American Legion Auxiliary collects Butter-Nut coffee strips and labels from jars to make Christmas gifts for children in orphan homes and for children of disabled veterans. Containers and labels will be at Drakle's B. W. Fine Food Store Truex Grocery and Morey's West Side Grocery.

Funeral services for Mrs William Van Horn age 92 of Aredale were held Saturday at 1 30 p m at First Methodist Church Aredale Rev Kenneth J Harden officiated burial was in Dumont Cemetery She was born July 15 1869 in Nieuw Beerta Holland and married William Van Horn May 17 1890 They came to America in 1913 and lived in Butler County most of the time later in Franklin County Then thirteen years in Aredale Survivors include eight children Harm Parkersburg Dick Greene Louis Mason City Bill Aredale Mrs Anna Kampman Dumont Mrs Willie McKee Sheffield Mrs Fred Kusian Parkersburg and Carrie Van Horn Aredale 39 grandchildren 86 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren Preceded in death by husband 1958 and son Ben who died November 8 of this year
Butler County residents bought 87 per cent of its bond quota by purchasing 87 866 in Series E and H savings bonds in October. The ten month total rose to 992 668. John McWhirter Allison volunteer chairman said Iowa sales in October totaled 9 797 967, up over 800 000 from 1960. Iowa's ten month total reached 121 105 974 for 81 per cent of the annual quota.
Butler County R E C power use adviser Mr Armin Buls will meet the adult farmer class next Monday at 8 pm to discuss Farm Use of Electricity. All adult farmers invited to attend at the high school building. The young farmer class meets Tuesday evening to discuss Buying or Raising Feeder Pigs.
Mike Jewell won the FFA traveling trophy awarded for the highest overall GPA across all subjects. The trophy is given to a member who wins it four times, marking a new activity this year to encourage members to strive for higher grades in all subjects.
The Butler County grand jury indicted Myrtle Sherman 44 of Greene on manslaughter charges for the November 13 gunshot death of her husband George 54. Sheriff Pete Boomgarden and Deputy Marvin Barth arrested her in Greene after the indictment. Sherman posted a 2000 bond and was released pending March trial.
A Social Security Administration representative from the Waterloo district office will visit Allison at the Court House on December 1 and 15 from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon to assist with applying for federal old age survivors and disability insurance benefits as well as social security numbers and employer identification numbers. Greene Community School reports a successful campaign reaching 35 students for its Beginners Band after fourth grade aptitude tests and parent meetings. Interested parents may contact the Instrumental Music Department for lessons and enrollment details. The list of new band members includes Diane Meyer, Mary Stauffer, Judy Wilkinson, Valerie Starkweather, Danea Fischer, Diane Debner, Gary Johnson, Carol Ruggins, Paul Rover, Linda Loomer, and others.
The Greene Public Library hosts a Christmas themed story hour with stories poems and records on Saturday November 25. There will be no story hour in December due to seasonal activities.
The Greene Quarterback Club sponsors a banquet honoring the 1961 Corn Bowl champions on Tuesday evening November 28 at 6 30 in the new elementary school. Main speaker Stan Sheriff head coach at the State College of Iowa Cedar Falls. His teams won the North Central Conference crown in the last two seasons with a 16 3 overall record. Music Mothers will serve. Tickets may be bought from Jim Drake Hoton Bellows James Mead or any Quarterback Club member.
Three Greene Community High School Band members will perform at Des Moines All-State Festival this week. Charlene Young plays alto saxophone, Vae Brinkman clarinet, Sara Green violin, all chosen after tryouts. Rehearsals Friday morning at Hotel Fort Des Moines Ballroom and Hotel Savery Grand Ballroom and Kant Theatre under directors McGinnes and Levine. The festival, part of the fall conference, ends with an 8:00 p.m. concert Saturday, November 25 at KRNT Theatre.
Greene Schools announce first quarter honor roll under Principal Vern Gard. with min 3.0 GPA required, A B C D F points define GPA. Seniors, juniors, sophomores, and freshmen named. D or unsatisfactory PE disqualifies.
Greene Ramblers beat Riceville 44 to 40 on the visitors court behind Doug Marsh and Ken Barth. The Ramblerettes defeated Riceville 57 to 44 with strong shooting and rebounding, while Nora Springs fell 60 to 29 as Bong Marsh led the Ramblers in an overall decisive victory. Survived by wife Amelia Debban son Glenn Claremont three grandsons Earl James Roy Haase and sister Lillie St Paul Minnesota. He moved to California 37 years ago.
New residents Mr and Mrs Norman Pierce of Cedar Falls announce the birth of a son, Bradley David, at Sator Hospital on November 4. He weighed 7 pounds. The baby’s mother is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Clarence Teeple.
