A reader laments that Greene's strong underclassmen were overlooked for All-Conference honors, while seniors predominated. Mrs. Henry Brinkman and daughters Janice and Janet presented the new fifty star flag to Greene Community School for use at the athletic field during Ackley-Greene football night last Wednesday. The flag honors Henry Brinkman Harold who died in World War II and all ten Brinkman sons who contributed to the junior and senior high football teams since 1934 their high school years span from 1934 to 1962 with Charles entering in 1958 and due to graduate in 1962.
Mrs Harrison Bone chairs the Greene drive and announces that Christmas seals will be mailed to Greene residents on November 14. Dayton Township is chaired by Mrs Raymond Johnson and Coldwater Township by Mrs Henry Bliss. The funds support health education rehabilitation and tuberculosis research through seal contributions.
Three Greene businesses Lloyd's Repair Shop Mel's TV Shop and T and M Cities Service Station were broken into early Friday morning November 4th. Thieves took batteries wrenches cigarette lighters lighter fluid and transistor radios. Butler County Sheriff's office investigates.
Katherine Ruzicka nee Adams born in Czechoslovakia in 1874 came to Roseville at three. She married Frank Ruzicka in 1901 at St. Mary’s Greene. Survived by husband three sons Rev Francis J Ruzicka Emil Anthony two daughters Emma Alvina and one grandson Paul. Rosary said Archbishop Binz. Solemn Mass at St Mary’s Roseville with Archbishop BinzAbsolution and sermon by Msgr John Smith. Interment Roseville Church cemetery. Relatives from Missouri Illinois and Iowa attended.
Conferences will run Monday through Friday November 14 18 with most meetings Friday November 18. Kindergarten has no school Thursday November 17 or Friday November 18, and grades 1 6 have no school Friday November 18. Time and place notices will come by mail, and questions go to Mrs. Iva Barnett at 229 between 8 10:30 a.m.
National Children s Book Week runs November 13 to 19 for the 42nd year, sponsored by the Children s Book Council to foster a love of reading among children. The Greene Public Library will showcase posters by noted illustrators and feature new children s and young adult books across genres.
New residents Mr and Mrs Earl Parcher of Marble Rock welcomed a son named Kenneth Fugene born Monday November 7 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 7 pounds 4 ounces. Mr and Mrs Wendell Crooks of Charles City welcomed a daughter born Tuesday November 8 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 8 pounds 1% ounces. She coincides with her sister Colleen's fifth birthday. Mrs Crooks was formerly Donna Vorhes of Greene.
Melvin Brown of Merrill Iowa will start as Butler County Extension Assistant on November 10 for about six months while Varlyn Fink is on military leave. A 1958 Iowa State agronomy graduate, Brown served in the armed forces, then worked on his father's farm and gained 4-H experience. He will reside in Allison and assist the full Extension program with emphasis on 4-H club work.
Rev. Paul D. Friederichsen, former Philippines missionary and war internee, will present a Bible teaching and Missions program at Calvary Baptist Church from Tuesday November 15 to Sunday November 20 at 730 p.m. daily and 11 a.m. Sunday. He will use Wu-Graph slides and sound kodachrome films to depict missionary principles and living Bible messages. The Friederichsens endured internment and starvation during the war and were liberated February 3, 1945, by the First Cavalry Division. The community is invited to attend.
Greene sparked the Ramblers with two early touchdowns but Ackley responded with explosive plays led by Lawton and Muller. Muller's 82 yard kickoff return and a pair of scores kept Ackley ahead, as Greene’s late rally could not overcome the visitors in the final contest of the season. The Ramblers finish with defensive stalwarts Buttjer Butzlaff Brinkman and Jewell back next year.
A new post office for Greene has been authorized from the St. Louis region Post Office Department. The one story masonry building sits on First Street between Traer and Rowley with 96 by 120 feet frontage and 2839 square feet of space. It will be built under the lease program with private funds, aiming for completion by July 15 1961 and occupancy August 1 1961.
The Junior Class presents the play We Shook the Family Tree on Friday evening November 11 at 8 00 in the high school auditorium. Cast includes Dallas Steere Sue Clapham Sandra Edwards Nora Needham Judy Hildebrand Douglas Marsh Ewing Miller Bruce Cheney Sharon Andrews Don Butzlaff Darlene Junker Connie Schoenfeld.
Dr Gustave G Prinsell missionary to Sierra Leone will speak on Tuesday November 15 at 8 00 p m at Bennedette Wesleyan Methodist Church in rural Bristow He is a graduate of Haughton College New York and trained in medicine at Columbia University prior to his Sierra Leone work He is married with four sons and plans to return to Sierra Leone in summer 1961
Cub Scout Pack 26 Greene plans a fall Dad and Lad outing this Sunday. Cubs and dads depart Greene at 8:15 a.m. from Drelle's corner. Protestant services start at 9:30 and Catholics attend their churches before meeting at the scout camp. Food is provided by leaders and costs are shared. Return to Greene by 2:30 p.m. Notify Bob Shultz by Friday evening.
Charles A. McClure died in Los Angeles on October 2, 194? He was born September 2, 1874 in Greene to Mr. and Mrs. Co. McClure. A Spanish American War veteran, he served in the 49th Town Volunteer Infantry and Fred W. Green Camp 120. United Spanish War Veterans members conducted services in Venice, California October 7, with burial at Fort Rosenecrant National Cemetery.

Vote totals show John F Kennedy leading with enough electorial votes for the presidency. In Iowa, Norman A Erbe defeats Edward McManus for governor while Richard Nixon leads in the state. Jack Muller wins US Senate seat over Herschel Loveless as a fire station measure passes. Reapportionment issue returns to Iowa Congress after Constitutional Convention fails. Butler County totals show a turnout of 7586 versus 7961 in 1956.
A Social Security Administration district representative will be at Allison Court House on November 14 and 28 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to assist with applications for old age survivors and disability insurance benefits, original and duplicate social security cards, and employer identification numbers. Tom Kruse, 89, of Parkersburg, died after being struck by a car on highways 20 and 14 at the west edge of Parkersburg. The driver, William Mulder, 71, backed from a driveway and hit Kruse as he moved onto the street. No charges were filed.
Six Ramblers were named to the Corn Bowl All-Conference football team last week. The banquet honoring the players was held Monday night at Manly. The seniors named include Larry Gabe Don Clikeman Larry Peters Tom Weixt Steve Rotiler and Dennis Wunsch.
Mr and Mrs Wilbur Dye of Dumont welcomed a daughter born Sunday November 6 at Cedar Valley hospital Charles City. She weighs 8 pounds 14 ounces and is named Christine Anne. Mr and Mrs Gary Gerhard Marble Rock welcomed a son born Friday November 4 at Cedar Valley hospital Charles City. He weighs 8 pounds 1 ounce and is named John Vern. Mrs Gerhard is the former Donna Osier of Greene. Mr and Mrs Russell Goodsell Sheffield welcomed a daughter born October 20 weighing 8 pounds 2 ounces named Minty Jo.
Vandals shot out several windows at Fremont No. 8 School eight miles east of Greene using a 12 gauge shotgun. The incident occurred Saturday or Sunday and is being investigated by the Alison Sheriff’s office.
