After eight straight wins, the Ramblers face Ackley in a key contest that could boost Greene in final polls. A big win would lift morale, rally local fans, and showcase the team’s full strength for the four quarters.
Greene Elementary schedules first quarter parent-teacher conferences for Monday November 13 and Tuesday November 14. No school for kindergarten through sixth graders on those days. Cards will be mailed November 8 with times and locations. parents may call 229 to reschedule if needed.
Ed Hicks was admitted to Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City on Saturday afternoon following a heart attack. He expects to return home Thursday.
Mr. R. W. Tornowske and Mr. Vern Gard attended a safety and driver training education conference at New Hampton for driver training instructors and school administrators in Northeast Iowa. The meeting reviewed high school program administration and new instructional methods. 15 of 22 represented schools require driver training for graduation, with some offering it only in summer. A six year graduates survey shows over 40 percent completed driver training for one semester. The program aims to produce beginners with solid safety foundations, stressing parental role and early safety education.
Iowa's pheasant season opens November 11 at 9:00 am with officials reporting strong populations. Biologists credit ideal hatching conditions, roadside mowing delays, and the ASC program for added nesting land. Season runs November 11 to December 15, 1961, with a three-bird bag limit and six in possession. Shooting hours are 9:00 am to 4:30 pm.
The Greene High School vocal music department presents a Fall Concert on Tuesday November 14 at 8 00 p m. The program features the mixed chorus the girls glee club and several small groups.
Mrs. Hampel of Allison, Butler County Chapter, American Red Cross, has been appointed regional fund chairman for the 1962 Red Cross campaign. She has long served as a Red Cross volunteer, organizing first aid, water safety, home nursing and blood programs, and has held secretary and home service roles. In the new post she will assist Red Cross leaders in Butler, Chickasaw, Franklin, and Hardin counties in planning the local fundraising drive.
A Navy recruiting officer visited Greene Community School last Wednesday and held a meeting with all junior and senior boys. He explained military laws including draft registration and a six year service obligation while noting the talk applied to all branches of the armed forces.
Bob C. Barnett 39 died Saturday in Veterans Hospital Iowa City after a week there from cancer illness. Born Floyd County December 5 1921 son of Fred and Carmen Barnett he married Iva Smith February 3 1941 in Charles City. He served in the 15th Air Force in Europe during World War II and belonged to American Legion Post 268 Greene. Surviving wife three children father and siblings. Funeral at St Peter’s Lutheran Greene with burial Rose Hill Cemetery military honors.
Kenneth Sutton head girls coach and the squad invite their parents to a pre season practice next Monday November 13 at 7 30 p m in the gym. The girls will demonstrate drills and play an inter squad game.
Vivian Kingery won the mayoralty while John Hamilton Francis Teeple Dr. D. T. Drees David Markle and Melvin Yerkes won council seats. The election saw 328 voters with 17 spoiled ballots. Drees Markle and Yerkes new on council. terms run 1962 to 1964.
Robert W Tornowske announced Greene Community School Industrial Arts Department received a test engine from Allis Chalmers Tractor Division for engine mechanics courses. The device lets students practice trouble shooting under supervision by replacing faulty parts and reading test equipment readings. Training focuses on equipment operation then quick fault isolation.
The Greene Parent-Teacher Association met last Wednesday evening for National Education Week. Paul Lewison outlined six guiding points of the pupil personnel services including tests, information, orientation, confidential counseling, placement with employment linkages, and follow-up to assess outcomes. George Koons discussed grade school testing and how accumulated data aids counseling. Ruth Haugenburg chaired, Vern Gard led singing, Ruth Barnett accompanied, and a sophomore parents committee served refreshments.

Mr. and Mrs Harold Williams of Charles City welcomed Veresa Lynn on Nov 3 at 7 6 17. Connie Jane born Oct 31 to Mr. and Mrs Les Conn. Mary Jane Wagner of Dumont pre mother. Robert Anderson Cedar Falls son Christopher V born Oct 2 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 8 13. Grandparents include Dr and Mrs TR V Andersen and Mr and Mrs Wilson Ray.
The annual Veterans Day supper is scheduled for Saturday at the Veterans Club. It invites all veterans and auxiliary members along with their families to participate.
Greene Ramblers stampede Nashua 26 to 7 to sew up the Corn Bowl Conference title and retain the Little Brown Jug. Raymond Baldwin paced the Bulldogs with the opening score, while Ron Taylor and Weichers fueled late drives and Marsh added key quarterback plays as Greene built a 12 to 7 halftime lead and pulled away 26 to 7. The victory leaves Greene atop the standings as Ackley awaits.
The Junior Class presents a play titled Down to Earth in the high school auditorium on Friday evening November 10 at 8 p m. Cast includes Edith Worley Mike Jewell Don Mc Burney Joyce Kelly Diane De Berg Ferrell Setme Barbara Allison Eldred Kingery Roger Stewart and Kent Burroughs.
The first adult farmer meeting will be held Monday November 13 at 8 pm in the high school. Panelists Dr. Andrews Drees Hoben and Weires will discuss Controlling Hog Cholera Leptospirosis and Erysipelas with an oyster stew to follow. All adult farmers invited. The young farmer class will move to Tuesday night starting November 14.
Bus departures for Ackley game at 6:30 p m today Wednesday. Future Teachers Club seniors travel to Prospective Teachers Day at State College of Iowa campus Thursday, sponsored by Mr Paul Lewison. Junior Class play Friday at 8:00 p m. High school party Saturday evening hosted by seniors to honor freshmen with a freshman king and queen chosen for the celebration.
State Services for Crippled Children will hold a medical clinic in Charles City at St. John Lutheran Church on Friday November 17. Eligible patients under 21 from Butler Cerro Gordo Chickasaw Floyd Franklin Grundy Howard Mitchell and Worth counties may receive free diagnostic and evaluation services from pediatrics orthopedics pedodontia psychology speech and hearing, physical therapy, nursing, medical social work, and electrocardiography consultants.
Alan Trees, son of Mr and Mrs Duane Trees, a sixth grader at Greene Community School, attends classes via an intercom system linked to three classrooms. Sponsored by the Special Education Department and installed by United Telephone, it helps him participate in lessons while recovering from rheumatic fever last May and spending about three months in bed.
The trout streams of northeast Town will be lightly stocked this fall depending on weather and fishing pressure. Richmond Springs in Backbone State Park and Twin Springs and Trout Run near the Decorah hatchery will receive the most fish due to accessibility. Winter stocking will use brood fish from the Federal Hatchery at Manchester.
Butler County is no longer eligible for federal brucellosis blood testing funds after failing to complete the modified certified brucellosis-free status campaign in time. County Extension Director Kay Connelly cites the Iowa state senate’s failure to pass enabling action as the reason. The county continues efforts to keep dairy herds free and progress toward area brucellosis-free status, with 153 herds left to be tested and about 100 showing suspicious reactors.
O M V . reports 69 year old Harry Henry Majewski of Greene arrested Saturday night November 4 by Highway Patrol on an operating while intoxicated charge. He appeared in Greene Justice Court Sunday with $500 bond for next term. bond posted and he was released from Allison County jail.
