Editor praises graduates and community values in reflective column

The editor notes graduates are smarter and facing complex problems, praises proud parents, and lauds ordinary citizens. Rudd Hero for Little League Opener Thursday

The Little League and Babe Ruth League summer seasons begin Thursday with Little League at :00 and Babe Ruth at 7:00. Greene coach Jerry Eimers announces Rudd hosts the opener, followed by a schedule listing games through July including Nora Springs Marble Rock Rockford Nashua and Rudd sites. The Babe Ruth Tournament dates are set for July 24 26 and 23.

Rites Held for William Heuer 62

William Hf Heuer 62 died May 24 at Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo after a few days of illness. He was born March 12 1905 at Allison to Edward and Minnie Heuer. He married Ida Drakle and they farmed in Wilmar. Survivors include Ida, son Edward of Allison, daughter Mrs Roger Harrs of Allison, brother Alfred of Bristow, five sisters, and seven grandchildren. Funeral May 27 at 2 pm at St John Lutheran Wilmar. Burial South Wilmar Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.

Vilmar Pastor Feted at Farewell

Rev and Mrs Emmett Busch and family were honored at a farewell gathering at St John s Lutheran Church in Vilmar on Sunday evening. The Busch family moves today to Bellevue where he will lead St John s Lutheran Church. They joined Wilmar Lutheran in February 1961 and Rev Paul Matthias of Clarksville led prayers during the event. Lunch followed and gifts were given to the Busch family.

Marines Discharge Returns Home After Service

Gets Discharge Sergeant Richard D. Backer, son of Mr. and Mrs. August Backer, has received his discharge from the Marines after three years of service. He spent one year in Vietnam and the last months at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He arrived home on Sunday.

Baptismal Service At Brethren Church

Baptismal services were held at the Church of the Brethren in Greene Sunday morning. Young people receiving the rite of baptism were Jim Fish Bruce Littterer Douglas Litterer David Schuknecht Mary Kate McRoberts Becky Smith and Lois Kingery. A fellowship dinner followed. Out of town guests included Mrs Pearl Rube Stanton California Miss Donna Van Deventer Rockford Mr and Mrs Kenneth Miller and family Cedar Falls and Mr Theophil Litterer Clarksville.

Graduates were feted at receptions hosted by families across the community. Terri Rutz, Tom Anthony, Sue Brinkman, Bruce Burroughs, Craig Cheney, Karen Jewell, Carolyn Kehoe, Craig Kemming, Russell Landers, Gerald Loomer, and Donald Krull were honored after graduation. Relatives and friends gathered from Charles City, New Hartford, Mason City, Osage, Allison, Greene, Waterloo, and beyond, with family hosts listing out of town guests and future plans at each event.

Bruce Nettleton son of Mr and Mrs J Clair Nettleton has been chosen to attend Boys State at Camp Dodge near Des Moines from June 4 through 10. A Greene Community High School junior he lettered in baseball and football and played basketball. He has belonged to the Dayton Busy Gophers 4 11 Club for seven years.

The largest Iowa State University graduation class, 1290 students, received diplomas on Saturday May 27. The 1959 record of 1215 was surpassed. Ninety five graduates earned With Distinction for GPAs of 3.5 or higher. Daryl Fischer earned a B S in Mathematics. Philip Pooley earned a B S in Physics. Butler County Achieves 35 Percent Bond Quota

Russell J. Perry of Aplington, volunteer county savings bonds chairman, reports April sales of Series E and HW United States savings bonds in Butler County at 53,538. The four month total reaches 276,070 toward 35 percent of the 1967 goal. Iowa April sales total 8,694,422 and four month state total 39,426,197 for 32 percent of the 1967 quota.

Greene Girls Graduate From Wartburg College in Largest Class

Wartburg College capped its largest class with 279 students at Saturday’s commencement. Among 46 summer graduates earning Bachelor of Science in Education degrees were Carole Kollman and Diane Wolf, daughters of local families.

Bids Set for Hwy 14 Paving in Butler Floyd Counties

The Iowa State Highway Commission approved low bids from Allied Construction Company of Charles City for Iowa 14 paving in Butler and Floyd Counties. Butler County project covers 1.8 miles of grading and Portland cement concrete paving costing 428,600 dollars. Floyd County project covers about two tenths of a mile of grading and Portland cement concrete paving at a cost of 37,944 dollars.

Mrs. Pearl Rube of Stanton California visited Greene last Wednesday and will remain until next weekend. Her son and daughter-in-law Mr and Mrs Robert Esslinger of Titusville Florida will join this weekend and accompany Mrs Rube back to Florida.

Awards Given at Commencement Program at Community School

Commencement exercises filled the Community School auditorium as the 1967 class graduated. Valedictorian Theresa Rutz led with a 4.00 GPA after earning 38 credits, while Jolene Mehmen and Genie Glass tied for salutatorian with 34 credits each and a 3.676 GPA. Other awardees included Barbara Melcher, Joyce Hauser, Rhonda Majewski, Lynn Gabe, Marilyn Walker, Amita Meyer, and Douglas Jewell, plus several scholarships and aid recipients for college study.

Greene Band Festival Representation By Marilyn Walker

Marilyn Walker daughter of Mr and Mrs Douglas Walker will represent Greene at the North Iowa Band Festival on Tuesday June 13. Greene High School 1967 graduate active in band mixed chorus National Honor Society Girl Scouts drama and church groups. Seventy eight school bands over 5000 musicians will march in the parade with a mass concert at Roosevelt Stadium at 5:30 directed by Paul Yoder. Greene’s Stage Band was among four selected to play in Central Park about 1:00 with Greene’s performance around 2:30.
