The editor praises local groups for organizing Doctors Day events. The Woman's Club Commercial Club Jaycees and Music Mothers organized planning setup and service. Ray Holtz provided music with improv and local talents Bruce Cheney Pam Drake Jerry Stark and Go Go Gals contributed. The evening fostered community pride and memorable honors.
The Greene Commercial Club offers free Thursday evening films in Railroad Park starting May 25. This week features Turf Boy, a family horse race show starring James Dunn, Buzz Henry, and Doris Day, shown after dark.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Mielke Jr. was born Friday May 19 at Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City. Todd Christopher weighs 8 pounds 2 ounces. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Norman Mielke Sr. of St Paul Minnesota and Mrs. Edith Farmer of Superior Wisconsin. Mr. Mielke has taught French in Greene Public Schools for four years.
A group of neighbors and friends planted 91 acres of corn and 40 acres of beans for Mrs. Robert Keck and family over several days. Helpers include Gerald Kingery, Lyle Stauffer, Harry Eliasen, Walter Eliasen, Clarence Eliasen, George Menken, Galen Menken, Walter Gabe, Vern Van Raden, Valeris Taylor, Quentin Hildebrand, Lowell Hobert, David O'Dowd, Donald Ritter, Bill Bahlmann, Art Schuett, Herbert Schafer, Emery Neumeyer, and Kenneth and David Kock. neighbor ladies provided meals and served. Aaron Jewell supplied fuel.
Senior Bowlers aged 55 or over competed in the Iowa State Senior Bowling Association Championship at 20th Century Lanes Ames over the first two May weekends. Leo Gabe and Lester Stock finished second in handicap doubles with 13814, Kenneth Jackson and Galen Maxwell were 26th with 1204, Veric Barth and Walter Gabe 27th with 1203. Gabe took second in Class 10 all events with 1280 and finished 23rd in handicap singles with 618.
A Greene elementary School fourth graders begin a new beginners band with free summer instrumental lessons. Ray Holtz, band director, says instruments can be rented on a two month trial or used instruments may be purchased. Parents and interested fourth through sixth graders are invited to the school music room Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. to discuss lessons and instrument options. Lessons start Thursday June 1.
Mr. and Mrs. John Hauser welcome a son born Monday May 22 weighing 7 pounds 10 ounces named Donnie Ray. He will be greeted at home by four sisters. Grandparents are Myron Wiltse, Mrs. Florence Wiltse, Mr. and Mrs. August Hauser, and great-grandfather Harry Wiltse.
Commencement exercises will be held in the Greene Community High School auditorium this evening at 8:00. Robert J. Lux of Charles City Senior High School speaks on But A Decision Away. American Legion and Citizenship awards, plus scholastic honors, to be presented by Vern Gard and John Van Eschen.
Fractured hip sustained by Herman Schroeder of Greene after a fall at the home of his son in Benson Minnesota. He was transported by ambulance to Floyd Hospital where surgery on the fracture was performed Monday morning to pin the hip.
About 1,216 workers in Butler county's non-farming businesses earned taxable wages under the old age survivors and disability insurance program, in the latest County Business Patterns. 339 reporting units paid out roughly $986,000 in taxable wages in the first quarter of 1965, with 528 workers in retail trade and 115 in building materials and farm equipment and 115 in automotive dealers and service stations.
Larry Dean Eimers son of Mr and Mrs Jerry Eimers earned second place at the Iowa Industrial Arts Fair held at the State College of Town Cedar Falls for a walnut gun cabinet entry. A Greene Community School MWe student under industrial arts teacher Jack Dudley.
Agnes McMahon Hardman a former Greene resident died in Anaheim California on May 20. Born February 2 1885 in Greene she was daughter of John and Elizabeth McMahon. Survivors include sisters Mrs Anna Sylvester Greene and Mrs Charlotte Rex Osage. Husband preceded her in death. Funeral services are in San Diego today with burial in National Cemetery San Diego.
Members will sell poppies Friday and Saturday this week to raise funds for disabled American Veterans. Friday house to house, Saturday in the business district. Mrs. Howard Raisty serves as chairwoman.
John Stauffer returned home Saturday from Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital in Charles City after undergoing surgery.
On furlough after 13 months in Viet Nam Sergeant Jim Anthony spends 30 days with his mother Mrs Mabel Anthony. He served at Phu Bai and will return to Viet Nam to complete a six month volunteer extension after the furlough.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Friedrichs returned home Friday evening from Valley City North Dakota where they attended funeral services for Mrs. Friedrichs sister Mrs. Lawrence Lee who passed away suddenly. They drove to Brem er Minnesota Wednesday where they visited another sister Mrs. Ann Fehr and also fished at Lake Washburn.
The Greene Merchants defeated Hamm's of Mason City 4 0 in the opener with Charles Weiss tossing a one hitter and took the nightcap 5 4 as Sutton hit a homer in the 5th to break a 4 4 tie. Frascht allowed three hits in game two.
Memorial Day events are set for Tuesday May 30 with a 9 15 a m gathering at City Hall and a 10 a m program at Rose Hill Cemetery. The Greene High School Band and Scouts lead a procession to the bridge and cemetery, followed by invocations speeches and taps, with traffic control measures and cemetery access details to ease flow and safety.
Mr and Mrs Leroy V Kingery of Nigeria West Africa announce the birth of a daughter named Tenya Ann born May lith at Garkida Nigeria. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Orval Kingery Greene and Mr and Mrs August Krehmeyer Hlaxtun Colorado. Mr Kingery teaches biological science at the Lassa Mission Field Bin Nigeria. A large Greene crowd joined a 45 float parade, a reception at the elementary school, and an evening recognition banquet at the high school auditorium to honor Dr. H G MacLeod and Dr. B V Andersen. Local leaders officials and many groups participated in the event. Memorial Day closings were announced for Greene stores on Tuesday May 30.
Ten graduates of the senior class will receive certificates at St. Peter's Lutheran Church on Sunday morning May 28 at the 10 15 service. They completed four years of high school Sunday School and include Anita Meyer Sandra Lord Daniel Van Raden Bonnie Schafer Sue Brinkman Mary Wolf Russell Landers Margaret Senne Erica Ennen and John Barth.
Memorial Day Tuesday May 30 observes a national legal holiday at all postal installations. There will be no window service or rural route service that day. Mail will be received distributed and dispatched as on all holidays.
In Hospital Clair Starkweather admitted to Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City on Monday for x rays. Mrs Zula Ramker admitted to Mercy Hospital Mason City Thursday evening for treatment. Her room 312 third floor. Cecil Starkweather admitted Charles City on Friday for treat. Vickie Schipper six daughter of Harm Schipper admitted Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo Monday May 15 room 130 pediatrics. Loran Duffield returned to University Hospital Iowa City Monday for further treatment.
Friends gather at the Earl Herman farm on Tuesday May 16 to plant 165 acres of corn and 100 acres of beans. A long list of men helped with planting and many women provided food for the dinner and lunches.
The Ramblers defeated Newman of Mason City 6 to 5 in a late burst. Doug Ruffridge homered twice in the first and again over the tennis courts for two long balls, then added a double. Larry Eimers worked six innings, Mason City stretched to 3 runs in the fourth, and Jerry Eimers’ club answered with a 2-run fifth to knot the score at 3.
The Greene Fire Department was dispatched to the Michael Bullock residence two miles southeast of Greene at 5:40 pm Tuesday to extinguish a wall fire. The blaze was stopped before causing damage to furniture or personal belongings.
