Greene Ramblers opened summer league with a 6 to 0 win over Nashua as Lynn Gabe pitched a no hit game with three walks and hit a bases loaded homer in the third. Greene also edged St Ansgar 1 to 0 in four innings when lights failed. Gabe notched another no hitter with 10 strikeouts as Greene scored in the second. Upcoming: at Manly this evening, at Rockford Monday, at Nora Springs Wednesday June 14.
Miss Annie Campbell aged 83 died in Marshalltown Pennsylvania on Tuesday morning May 30 after three years ill health Survivors include brothers A D Campbell Greene Riley Campbell Rudd and J B Campbell Ickesburg Pennsylvania Funeral services were held Saturday at Syville Pennsylvania
Greg Majewski seven year old son of Mrs. Joan Majewski had a tonsillectomy at Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital in Charles City.
Eldred FE. Kingery son of Mr and Mrs Orval Kingery returns home late Saturday after discharge from the Navy. During four years of service he visited ports in England France Spain Italy Turkey Greece Lebanon Crete Malta Sardinia Mexico and the United States. This fall he plans to attend North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City as a business major.
Red Cross sponsored swimming classes for Greene Allison Clarksville and Shell Rock start at Greene Community Pool for six weeks. Kids must be eight by August 1 1967 and have signed permission slips. Greene area pupils bring slips June 13 and split by last name A-M 9 10 am N-Z 10 11 am. Area towns schedule Clarksville Wednesdays Shell Rock Thursdays Allison Fridays. Adult night 18 and up Wednesdays 6 30 8 pm. Pool hours 1 00 5 30 pm and 6 30 9 30 pm.
The Greene Fire Department rushed to extinguish several grass fires along railroad tracks from inside the city to the Greene Rendering plant at 4 20 Saturday afternoon. Investigators say the flames were apparently started by a freight train that had rolled through town earlier.
Local typing instructor at Greene Community School announces 40 and 50 typing pins for high school students. All students may pick up the pins at the instructor's home.
A Farmers Inc Cooperative Society ammonia tank rolled down the embankment behind the Rock Island Depot in Greene Monday night or Tuesday morning. The 850 gallon, four ton tank prompted investigation by Deputy Sheriff Marvin Barth with elevator officials suspecting local youths. If valves had broken, ammonia gas could have killed nearby vegetation and endangered residents.

Girl Scout Day Camp at Old Round Grove near Greene begins Monday June 19 for a five day session from 9 30 to 3 30 daily. Girls meet at Perrin Park for transport. Outdoor skills taught include lashing knots trail signs compass distances fires outdoor cooking and Morse signaling. New activities include boating and canoeing. Cadet Scouts can work on badges. Apply to Day Camp director Mrs Laverne Kehoe by June 5.
Vickie Schipper daughter of Mr and Mrs Harm Schipper returned home Friday from Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo where she received treatment.
Ray Holtz announces a summer beginners band with 55 fourth and fifth graders, the largest ever in Greene. Free lessons and a trial rental plan allow students to try instruments before deciding on fall enrollment. Names of participating students include Jacqueline Hauser and Vicki Heitland on flutes, Denise Landers on saxophones, Mike Constein on trombone, Sheila Barnes on drums, and many others.
Diane E Marsh Nandell, among 97 candidates for June 4 graduation at the University of Dubuque College of Liberal Arts, earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. Her parents are Leon B and Mrs. Marsh of Greene, who attended the exercises in Dubuque. Mr and Mrs Robert Nandell, Milwaukee, Wis, where he works as a staff photographer for the Milwaukee Journal.
Mrs. 1towarda Nalsty, chairman of Greene poppy sales, reported that $123.56 was collected from sales in the residential and business districts.
In Floyd County Veteran's Memorial Hospital Charles City Mrs. Herman Mason was admitted last week for treatment. Dale McRoberts was admitted to Mercy Hospital Mason City on Monday afternoon in room 552 for treatment. Cliff Fischer was taken by ambulance to Floyd County Veterans Memorial Hospital Charles City on Tuesday afternoon for treatment.
Augusta Martzahn 91 died May 31 at Lutheran Hospital Fort Dodge while visiting her daughter. Born Feb 3 1876 in Waverly she married John Martzahn in 1897. Survived by daughter Hilda Becker three granddaughters and one great granddaughter. Funeral June 3 at 3 with Rev. Paul Metzger at Rose Hill Cemetery. Leonard Gunther Funeral Home Fort Dodge in charge.
Mr and Mrs Albert Barth learn of the birth of their first great grandchild a boy to Mr and Mrs Jack Stewart of Maywood Illinois on May 29 weighing 6 pounds 5 ounces The baby is named Jack Parker Stewart the III The mother is former Mary Lynn Hyers daughter of Mr and Mrs Earl Hyers of Berkeley Illinois.
Congressman H R Gross Brownawill be honored by the nonpartisan Americans for Constitutional Action with its Distinguished Service Award at a reception in the Nation's Capital tonight. ACA cites his voting record supporting constitutional principles and a strong economy. Admiral Moreell notes the award honors dedication to the Constitution, without implying agreement on all ACA principles. Gross, in his tenth term, serves on Foreign Affairs and Post Office and Civil Service committees.
The Little League and Babe Ruth League opened with wins over Rudd last Thursday. Little League won 6 to 1, with Van Eschen and Eimers pitching a 1-hitter and 10 strikeouts. Babe Ruth followed with a 3 to 0 victory as Jerry Shultz and team defense shut down Rudd, aided by solid fielding and base running. Greene's bats were limited to four hits, while the Shultz duo combined for key first-inning runs and defensive plays. Greene will host Marble Rock Thursday then travel to Rockford Monday.
August Grendler retires July 1 after 18 years as Greene Community High School custodian. He and wife plan to move to 555 5th St. W Garner with sons Paul, Francis and Clare. Grendler helped shape the school during his tenure, from gym renovations to library system updates, and previously worked at Jordan and Bradgate. He led the Butler County Chapter of Custodians for years.
Greene Merchants split a doubleheader with Charles City, winning 3 to 6 as Weiss allowed one hit in the opener, then losing the final 5 to 4. Weiss hit a homer for Greene. In the tournament, Greene beat Northwestern Mason City 1 to 0 in round two. Sheffield toppled Greene 6 to 2 in finals. Greene hosts Webster City next, with a doubleheader at 1:00.
Jerry Eimers announced practice times starting next week on Tuesdays and Fridays for Babe Ruth and Little League. The Babe Ruth boys will practice from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m., 4th to 6th graders from 9:45 to 11:00 a.m., and 1st to 3rd graders from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m.
Greene area children may join the summer reading program now in progress at Greene Public Library. The slogan Be Wise Read Good Books this Summer appears on posters. Each child’s name is recorded on a large chart with the books read tallied. recognition awaits the top readers in lower and upper elementary divisions. Fourth and fifth graders with Read Good Books posters on display may call for information at their convenience.
Connie Schrage aged 15 daughter of Mr and Mrs Verlyn Schrage had an emergency appendectomy at Floyd County Vet Charles City on Monday May 29. She returned home Saturday.
