Brian Frevert lowered the school record by 3 seconds with a 1 59.4 in the State Championship 880 yd race. He led from 300 yards to go after a 56.5 first quarter, finishing strong and also placing in two events. Frevert’s Class B mark topped Class A and C times, as Greene earned 7 points and Maurice Orange City won Class B.
The second Sunday of the Centennial Celebration on June 2 at First United Church of Christ Pleasant Valley ER 2 Clarksville will reunite all who were confirmed in the church’s 100 year history. Service at 10:30 am includes Rev Alfred Hardt and Rev Ralph Wedeking with classes 1893 1913 to be recognized. A noon lunch follows and an open house fellowship in the afternoon. Special guests Immanuel Clarks ville and St. John's Nashua.
The Billy Graham lecture film For Pete's Sake will be shown at Allison High School auditorium on Sunday June 3 with two showings at 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Music by Christian Flames. Admission is free.
Charles Conrad Schmidtke age 83 of Greene died May 27 at Mathers Nursing Home Greene. Born May 13 1885 in Floyd County Ia to Herman and Agusta Schmidtke. Survived by two sons LaVerne and Lyle, one brother Henry, and one granddaughter Beverly Lubben. Funeral May 29 at St Peters Lutheran Greene with burial Riverside Cemetery Charles City. Rev Paul Metzger officiated. Reid's Funeral Chapel arranged.
Troop 278 of the Junior Girl Scouts went camping at Ackley Creek near Marble Rock with leaders Mrs. Robert Schafer Mrs. Dale Johnson and Miss Sally Sorenson. Helpers were Mrs. Dan Barth Joanne Sen ne and Jan Majewski. The group arrived between 4 and 5 pm, held a pow wow and wood gathering contest, planned the next day's jobs, ate supper, set up tents and played games. A campfire featured songs and marshmallows then they slept. Morning meals included French toast cocoa grape juice and dough boys before a hike with the camp director. They saw deer and raccoon tracks, packed tents away and had a water fight before returning home.
More than 2 000 graduates received diplomas Saturday morning at the annual spring commencement exercises at Iowa State University. It was the largest class ever to be graduated from Iowa State. The article notes 26 members in the graduating group.

Ensign Richard L Knight graduates from Naval Officers Candidate School in Newport Rhode Island with distinction. He is commissioned in the Supply Corps US Navy Reserve and will attend six months of supply school in Athens Georgia. Knight son of Kenneth and (Mrs) Knight Greene Iowa State 1967 Greene HS 1971 married to Nancy Osborn Garwin a 3 month old daughter Shari accompanied him to Athens.
The Greene Community Swimming Pool will open Saturday June 2 at 1 pm and operate daily from 1 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm. It closes on cold or bad weather and when not flying the American flag. Admission includes Family 18 dollars, Child Economy 3.50 for 20, Adult 75 cents, Junior 35 cents, Child 20 cents. staff includes manager Margaret Senne and lifeguards Patti Rutz Vanda Heitland Kathi Alexander. Pool board members are Norman Graven president Gary Rottler secretary Laverne Kehoe James Schroeder and Keith Dralle.
Sister Mary Alice O.S.F. observed her Golden Jubilee at Freeport Grand Bahamas where she is headmistress of St. Mary Star of the Sea School. Bishop Hagarty Nassau celebrated Mass and preached the homily in honor of the occasion. Sister Alice taught at Sacred Heart Academy in 1928 and 1929.
James Alan Meek earned a Bachelor of Arts in business education at UNI Cedar Falls on May 26. A dinner followed at the Mr. and Mrs. Meek residence in Cedar Falls attended by Warne and Pat Meek and other relatives. Jim plans summer study at UNI and the University of Arizona and will teach in MacGregor in the fall.
Dr Paul Grendler the commencement speaker at Greene High School on Wednesday May 30 at 8 pm. He is a Greene High School graduate of 1933 and has earned multiple scholarships and fellowships including a Fulbright. He will be visiting Greene with his wife Marcella and two children Peter and Jean. He has held posts at University of Toronto Pittsburgh Wisconsin Florence and is connected with Cornell for the coming year.
Second grade students at Greene Community Elementary launched a children's safety campaign by placing Patch the Pony posters in local stores. The posters urge kids not to accept gifts or ride with strangers, with the motto Nay Nay From Strangers Stay Away. Mary Lou Murphy leads the project at B and stores including B W First State Bank Barnes Library Dralles Gambles.
