The editor urges Charles City officials to map long term needs after the tornado and coordinate with neighboring towns. A plan should cover personal problems, lodging, and avoid feast and famine cycles by aligning food, labor, and housing assistance in upcoming weeks.
Benefit softball games for the Tornado Relief Fund at Charles City will be held at the Greene ball diamond Friday night. The Larry Lang Waterloo 1967 state champions will play the Bud Alitz Used Car Mason City team in two games, first at 7 30 p m. Bud Alitz players include Bob Barth Kenneth Sutton Douglas Ruf Douglas Marsh Charles Meek and Larry Staudt. Admission charged at the gate. children admitted free.
The Greene Public Library sponsors a summer reading club for young readers with theme Circus Fun. Registration begins today, May 29, for a limited time. Each child receives a Circus Fun Reading Chart to track progress. About 60 youngsters joined in 1967. organizers hope for more enrollment this year.
Disaster victims with income, property or resource losses from the Charles City tornado may purchase food stamps for at least one month. Apply before June 15 in the county of residence. Butler County access is Mon Fri at the Social Welfare Office above the Bank in Allison, stamps sold Monday 9 to 12 and 1 to 3.
A Social Security Administration representative will visit the Allison Court House on June 5, 12, and 26 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Vernon S. Meyer, district manager, stated contact options include the Waterloo district office at 525 W. 5th Street or by phone 234-1554. The Waterloo office hours are Mondays 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Greene Community Swimming Pool will open on Thursday May 30 weather permitting. Hours are 1 00 to 5 00 p m and 6 30 to 9 30 p m daily. Manager James Shoemaker says rules will be strictly enforced and noncompliant individuals will be denied entry. Season tickets for children juniors and families may be purchased at the pool or from Claire Curtis the town clerk.
Bible School at St. Peter's Lutheran Church starts Monday, June 3, and runs through Friday, June 7, from 9:00 to 11:20 a.m. Superintendent is Mrs. Quentin Hildebrand. Teachers include Mrs. Ivan Schafer, Mrs. Paul Metzger, Mary Wolf, Mrs. Harold Heer en, Mrs. Dean Debner, Mrs. Dave Markle, Mrs. Fred Voigts, Esther Landers, Mrs. Darrell Brinkman, Betty Wirth, and Rev. Paul Metzger with several girls assisting.
Butler County Republican Women will sponsor a Fun Day rain or shine at Beaver Meadows Park north of Parkersburg on Wednesday June 19. Activities include golf bridge 500 Chinese checkers and table games. attendees may chat on the clubhouse porch. Scott C. Frascht, son of Mr and Mrs Russell Frascht, was promoted to sergeant while serving with the Air Force in England since October 1966. Memorial Day observances will be held Thursday May 30 with a 9 30 a m service at the bridge and 10 a m at Rose Hill Cemetery. The Greene High School Band color bearers firing squad VFW American Legion Girl Scouts Boy Scouts and Club Scouts form the parade line led by grand marshal Aaron Jewell. Veterans from World War I through Vietnam are invited to march in Sunday dress. firing squad in khaki. Meeting times at City Hall 9 15 a m. Buses will transport band ministers and others to the cemetery. The Rose Hill service features invocation by Glenn Randall selections by the high school band and Gettysburg Address by Patti Rutz. Floyd County auditor Ed Folkerts died en route to Rochester Minnesota after months of ill health. Born December 29 1900 in Wellsburg he married Elsie Hurd in 1928. He served as Floyd County Auditor since 1960 and owned Folkerts Printing in Charles City. Funeral in Rudd with burial at Evergreen Cemetery.
A new beginners band is formed in Greene Elementary School fourth grade. Free summer instrumental lessons are offered for participation. Parents may visit the music room on May 29 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to discuss lessons and instruments. Summer lessons begin Monday, June 3.

Pastor George S Knutson invites the public to a Monday June 3 concert at 745 p m by Trio of Triumph from Grand Rapids Baptist Bible College and Seminary in Grand Rapids Michigan The group includes Donna Squires Clare Jean Bush Priscilla Marquardt and Carolyn Bergman pianist Rev Clair L Saliers will accompany and speak on Christian education The college moved to a new 94 acre campus on Grand Rapids Beltline and expects about 550 students this fall including 60 seminary students
Greene Community High School held an awards night on Tuesday May 21. Superintendent W J Tatum gave basic letter awards to a large list of sophomores juniors and freshmen. Stage Band directed by Ray Holtz performed several numbers. Track awards recognized Neil Burroughs Allan Hogue Steve Ebling Jim Shultz Edwin Freese Bill Landers and others. Baseball honors were presented by Jerry Eimers and Kenneth Sutton including Jeff Drakle Bill Landers Larry Eimers and Bruce Nettleton.
Daily Vacation Bible School at First Presbyterian Church runs from Monday June 8 to Friday June 7 with sessions 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. Teachers include Nancy and Laura Hamilton for kindergartners, Mrs Donald Welsh, Mrs Lowell McGee, Carol Litterer and others for primary and junior levels. Mrs Leslie Larson is secretary. United Presbyterian Women provide daily refreshments under Mrs Jim Mead.
Sergeant First Class Jerry B. Caldwell won the Crusader of the Year for 1967 at Olathe Naval Air Station Kansas. The ARADCOM award honors the person with the most significant reenlistment contribution in the command, with Caldwell directly involved in reenlisting 34 men during the past year. He has previously earned regional and command trophies since becoming Group Career Counselor in May 1967 and holds the AAADCOM Mugwump award for 21 re-ups in FY 1968.
An event at the Country Club this weekend features a husband and wife shotgun golf match at 3:00 p.m. Sunday followed by a hamburger fry at 6:30 p.m. Local members are invited to attend and participate.
Greene Community School honored 75 graduates of the 1968 class at a Wednesday night ceremony. Valedictorian Anne Voigts earned a 4.00 GPA and 34 credits, while salutatorian Linda Wunsch logged a 3.76 GPA and 34 credits. Several students received scholarships from Wartburg College, Floyd County Memorial Hospital, and local foundations, including the Bert Pooley Memorial Scholarship to Edwin Freese and the Margaret Amy Pooley Scholarship to Dennis Tack.
John Van Eschen 39 of Greene announces Democratic bid for U S Congress in old North Iowa District. Navy veteran and 1958 University of Iowa Law School graduate, he practiced law in Greene since. He seeks change in Third District leadership.
Dave Markle was released Saturday from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City after a ten day stay for fractures to both legs suffered in the Charles City tornado. He returned home Saturday afternoon.
Floyd Wayne Mauch of Bay Center Washington born October 4 1891 in Floyd County died May 15 in a South Bend Washington hospital. He married Louella Sloper November 5 1918 in Portland Oregon. Funeral and burial were held in Bay Center Washington May 18. He survived by two daughters two sons and a sister.
Mrs Marvin Bruns entered Allen Memorial Hospital in Charles City on Sunday and underwent surgery on Tuesday. She is listed in room 427.
Governor Harold E. Hughes issues a 40 day and 40 night Reverence for Human Life in Iowa from May 29 to July 8 urging drivers to treat safe driving as a moral obligation amid rising highway deaths. The proclamation asks spiritual leaders to help raise awareness among motorists.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Petter of Anoka Minnesota announce that both were hospitalized at Mercy Hospital in Greene. Mrs Petter has returned home while Mr Petter underwent treatment for a heart condition and is now recuperating at 3550 Aldrich Circle Anoka Minnesota 55303.
