Mr. and Mrs. Tom Tiernan of Waverly announce the birth of a son on Tuesday May 14 at Scholtz Hospital in Waterloo. The infant weighs 7 pounds. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Tiernan of Allison and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Stubbe of Greene.
Mr and Mrs Mike Potter of Minneapolis Minnesota welcomed a son born Tuesday May 14 weighing 4 pounds 3 ounces He is named Timothy William and has a brother named Christopher to greet him at home.
W J Ramker mayor announces a canvass to map semi permanent housing in Greene for Charles City tornado victims. He will recruit local groups to assist and says details appear next week in the Recorder.
Round Grove Golf and Country Club hosts Ladies Day on Wednesday May 29. Memorial Day events Thursday May 30 include shotgun golf at 9 00 a m a holiday potluck at 12 30 p m and mixed 2 ball four some at 2 00 p m.
Senior bowlers from near Greene competed in the Senior Bowling Tournament at Marshalltown. Walter Gabe won the Iowa State Senior Handicap singles in Class D with 685, Galen Maxwell took second with 675, while Kenneth Jackson placed 19th with 620. Maxwell led Class D All Events with 1313, Gabe was 12th with 1250. Leo Gabe finished seventh in Class C Handicap singles with 643.
Jim Lawler passed away at a Washington hospital on Friday May 17 following surgery. He was known as the advance and publicity man for Tilton Comedians. Funeral and burial services were held in Mount Sterling Illinois.
A killer tornado struck Charles City at 4:50 p m on Wednesday May 15 destroying over twenty million dollars in property and taking at least 14 lives. It destroyed three square miles from the south end through the town to the northeast, tossing cars and buildings and injuring hundreds. Homes and farms across Floyd County suffered major damage including 372 homes destroyed and 13 farms devastated. Additional damage was reported near Aredale and Marble Rock with farms hit and outbuildings demolished.
Dr Hugh Gordon MacLeod 73 died May 19 at Chautauqua Guest Home Charles City after five months at Chautauqua Eleventh Street Home He was born July 10 1894 in Pictou Nova Scotia earned his MD from Dalhousie in 1922 and practiced medicine in Greene since 1926 Survived by wife Margaret three daughters seven grandchildren and a sister Funeral at First Presbyterian Church with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery Memorials to medical scholarships.
Mr and Mrs William F Debner welcomed a daughter Susan Kay born Monday May 13 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital Waverly. The 7 pound 15 ounce infant is greeted at home by sister Margaret and brother Marvin. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Willie Debner of Greene and Mr and Mrs Clyde Mathes of Shell Rock.
A tornado uprooted trees and blew out windows as debris littered fields and roadsides. It touched down on the Max Wedeking farm, damaging a large machine shed and other structures, with Milton Standts also affected. A preceding hail storm produced golf ball to 14 inch circumference hail, while residents sought shelter in basements or under heavy objects.
American Legion Auxiliary members will sell Poppies Friday and Saturday this week. Friday they go house to house, Saturday in the business district. The poppies are made by disabled American Veterans. Mrs. Edward Heitland is chair woman.
Lowell Maxson the local fire chief announced a two long blast warning system for tornadoes. An error last Wednesday caused the whistle to blow mistakenly and he urged anyone spotting a tornado to call the Greene Fire Department so two long blasts can alert residents of the approaching danger.
Lou H Franke born November 28 1888 in Floyd County died May 17 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital age 79 5 months 19 days. Survived by wife Jessie two sons Ray and Robert of Charles City daughter Inez Marten Greene 14 grandchildren 18 great grandchildren 3 brothers and 1 sister. Funeral May 20 at St John s United Church of Christ Pleasant Hill burial Rose Hill Cemetery Greene. Reid s Funeral Chapel in charge.
Commencement exercises will be held this evening at 8 at the high school auditorium for Greene Community High School. The Class of 75 is the largest to graduate. Ronald Matthias of Wartburg College will deliver the address titled The Case for Confidence. Baccalaureate services were held Sunday with Rev. Wayne Gjerde speaking on To Struggle With All.
Two scouts from Troop 26 received Eagle ranks at a Monday evening Court of Honor held in St. Peter's Lutheran Church parlors. John Mead led the ceremony with Henry Smeins as Scoutmaster, while Rev. Donald Welsh offered the invocation and benediction.
Memorial Day services will be held Thursday May 30 with a 9 30 am bridge service and a 10 am program at Rose Hill Cemetery. Guest speaker is Ralph F. McCartney of Charles City Floyd County state representative speaking on The Price That Was Paid. Cemetery traffic plan directs entry through north and south gates and outgoing traffic through center gate to ease jams. Public urged not to park in drives during 8 to 11 am and to follow one way traffic.
The Greene Fire Department was called to the Carroll Frerichs home near Packard at noon on Saturday when an oil burner overheated. There was no damage reported.
The Community Service Committee of the Greene Woman's Club announces a six week summer recreation program running June 17 to July 26. Activities include bowling for grades 3–5, golf for grades 5–12, archery with later class age ranges, and a general activities program for grades 1–4 led by Cadet Girl Scouts. Sam Sneed leads golf, Dexter Alexander archery, Elmer Stock bowling. Minimum 10 participants per activity. Contact program chair Mrs. Donald McBurney or committee members for questions.
Delaware Senator John J Williams will headline the June 1 Salute to H R Gross at Electric Park Ballroom Waterloo. Iowa Senator Jack Miller and Congressmen John Kyl and William Scherle join the event with many GOP officials and candidates attending.
The Little League practice for boys in grades 5 6 and 7 starts Friday May 24 at 4 30 pm. Other players wait until summer vacation. All players should watch the paper for notices.
