Mrs. Lowell Maxson, chairman, reports Greene residents raised 580.35 for the Cancer Drive. Of this total 15.00 is recorded as a memorial gift for Mrs. Hazel McCray.
The Greene freshmen track squad finished second in the Little Mohawk Relays at Charles City last Friday, earning two trophies and 49 points, behind Charles City. Top finishers included Gary Rottier, Eldred Kingery, the shuttle hurdle relay crew, and the 440 yard relay team, with multiple athletes earning medals and Kingery and Rottler each claiming multiple wins.
Mayor Kelly court records list Richard Klunder of Greene fined ten dollars plus four dollars costs for illegal muffler and speeding with twenty five dollar fine and four dollar costs. Lester Dennis Juhl of Greene cited for improper parking with five dollar fine. Fred Hildebrand of Charles City fined ten dollars and four dollars costs for not having vehicle under control. Roy Paul Largent of Mason City fined ten dollars for stop sign violation. J P Knight’s court records show speeding at forty dollars fine and thirteen dollars costs.
Mrs W H Buchholz is back at home after treatment at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City last Wednesday.
Mrs Eva Kingery died May 19 at Lutheran Rest Home Hampton at 94. After a long Greene area life she left behind three sons Frank Albert Delmer and four daughters including Mrs Fred Hardy and Mrs Dayton Mather. Services were at Church of the Brethren with burial in Rose Hall Cemetery.
The Cub Scout pack meets Wednesday evening June 1 at 7 30 in the high school cafeteria. Scouts wishing to go to the Marble Rock Scout grounds must bring their money to this meeting for submission. Eligible scouts must be 10 years old.
The B and W Fine Foods bowling team placed sixth with 2720 points in the Waterloo Courier tournament held last weekend.
Clare Grendler son of Mr and Mrs August Grendler receives a $500 grant-in-aid scholarship from Upper Iowa University in Fayette for the 1960 61 school year. He has enrolled and plans to participate in football and basketball.
Weekend visitors at the home of Mr and Mrs Fred Wirth and their family included Mr and Mrs Fred Bense and family of Millstadt Illinois and Jeanette Wirth of Decorah. Mrs Bense and Mrs Wirth are sisters.
The annual bicycle inspection sponsored by the City Council and Explorer Post No 26 will run two nights starting Tuesday evening May Bist at 7 00. Inspectors will review each bike, provide repair suggestions, and add scotch lite tape for night safety. The program aims to reduce accidents and promote safer riding for youngsters.
Memorial Day events will occur Monday May 30 with Veterans of Foreign Wars American Legion Boy Scouts Girl Scouts and Greene High School band assembling at City Hall at 10 15 am. A 10 30 service at the bridge features band numbers wreath laying prayer by Rev G F Butler rendering of taps and firing squad. Rose Hill Cemetery service starts about 11 am with two band numbers prayer by Rev George Knutson Gettysburg Address by Diane Murphy and wreath placement by Girl Scouts. Guest speaker Mr Edward J Gallagher Jr of Waterloo. Traffic will flow via North South Gates for in and Center Gate for out with one way driving. parking and vase removal deadlines noted.
The Greene Rambler Little League and Babe Ruth teams begin play on Thursday May 26 with the Nora Springs Eagles on the local diamond. Little League starts at 6 00 pm Babe Ruth at 7 30 pm. Coaches plan multiple teams, with players aged 8 through 12 from Greene enjoying equal playing time after Bible School ends.
Mike Adams five year old son of Mr and Mrs William Adams fell down the hay chute in the family barn at their Greene home on Friday evening and broke both bones in his right arm above the wrist. He received a cast at Cedar Valley Hospital and is recovering at home. The arm will be in a cast for about a month.
New residents Mr and Mrs Lous Downing welcomed a daughter born Wednesday May 18 at Cedar Valles hospital Charles City. The baby Sandra Jane weighed 8 pounds. Mr and Mrs Ecsmond Haus er welcomed a daughter born Thursday May 19 at Cedar Walls hospital Charles City. The infant Corrs Jo weighed 10 pounds. Mr and Mrs Tin Groshens Cresco welcomed a son born Monday May 23 at Cedar Valley Hospital via Chews City. The baby Thani weighed 6 pounds. Mrs Groshens is formerly Phyllis Osier of Greene.
The Methodist Church will host Vacation Church School from May 31 to June 3 and June 6 to June 10, with sessions 9 30 to 11 30 each morning for kindergartners through 6th graders and a junior high class for 7th and 8th graders. Mrs Dwight Barnhart chairs the planning committee with teachers Mrs Howard Clapham Mrs Don Gersema Mrs V J Tatum Mrs Richard Wagoner and Mrs William Nordmeyer. Assistants include Barbara Ray Sheryl Ott Elaine Daub Barbara Crooks Linda Jackson Sue Clapham Connie Foster and Nancy Kaiser. Mrs Clayton Becker handles records reports films supplies and materials.
Harold Johnson of Parkersburg was convicted by a jury on May 16 of making beer available to minors and faces sentencing later. Romaine Jannsen of Ackley was found innocent by a jury last Friday on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
Memorial Day May 30 hosts a pot luck supper at Round Grove Golf and Country Club. Coffee committee includes Gerald Stephenson Richard Wagoner Jim Mead and Calvin Kelly.
Friday afternoon May 22 marked senior day exercises at Greene Community School. The program opened with selections by the band and featured many award presentations led by Supt. V J Tatum. Seniors Dean Brinkman Larry Busma and Roger Nixt received basic letter awards alongside juniors seniors and younger students in a long list. Numerous music and instrumental awards followed with many named recipients across years including Linda Busse Maureen Allison Ronald Crooks and Carol Crosby. The program included special honors such as the John Philip Sousa Award and the Mathematical Association of America Award and concluded with cheerleader awards and other recognitions.
Nicholas Nixt 79 of Union Township near Marble Rock died Saturday after a several months illness at his home north of Greene. He married Mary Kiefer on October 30 1906 and farmed all his life. Survived by wife Mary son Wilbur Greene daughter Mrs Frank Katcher Greene five grandchildren. Funeral held Tuesday at St Marys Catholic Church with burial in St Marys Cemetery. Tamultons Funeral Chapel handled arrangements.
Returned home Mr and Mrs Wayne C Jones of San Diego California left for home yesterday after spending twelve days in the home of her mother Mrs Florence Woodling Other visitors were Mr and Mrs Carl Shafs of Logansport Indiana and also Mr and Mrs Tom Silver and baby of Oehvein
B and W Fine Food Stores announced the purchase of the Samson Ford Company building and lot in Clarion to open a new supermarket in September. The Hampton based chain operates in Hampton Sheffield Greene and Allison and plans a modern 68 by 120 foot store with parking across the street and air conditioning. Remodeling begins soon with Evans Bay Construction Company handling the complete project. The store will be north of the courthouse in Clarion next to the Clarion ware.
Visiting parents Mr and Mrs Harry Downs Jr and family from Cambridge Massachusetts arrived Monday for a week long visit in the home of the former's parents Mr and Mrs Harry Downs.
