William Boyd son of Mr and Mrs Bert Boyd of Aredale is stationed aboard the aircraft carrier U S S Ranger CV at San Francisco California for a Far East tour of duty. He is expected to return to the United States this fall.
High Scholastic Students Listed if Greene High School promotion activities were held Tuesday morning in Greene Community School. Seniors Sally Bartels Betty Jumbling Kenny Parks lead class rankings with honor certificates. Awards also given for American History International Relations Junior High American History Danforth and Citizenship honors to multiple students.
Pamela Opperman of Allison paid a $5.00 fine and $4.00 costs for a stop sign violation. Leonard Moser of Marble Rock faced a $5.00 fine and $4.00 costs for the same offense. Vernon Claude Carr of Nashua was cited for disturbing the peace with a $100.00 fine.
Girl Scout Day Camp will be held at Old Round Grove from June 13 to 17 with daily sessions 9 30 to 3 30. Activities include games singing nature dramatics campcraft hiking and outdoor cooking for about 35 girls. Director is Mrs Harold Allison and business manager Mrs Clair Curtis with Mrs Elizabeth Jones aiding for two days. Registration open to any girl by Friday with prep items listed and a pre camp training session June 3 at 9 15.
A Social Security Administration representative from Waterloo will be at the Allison Court House on June 6 and 20 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to help residents file applications for federal benefits and obtain social security numbers and employer IDs. Those who cannot attend may call the Waterloo district office at ADams 4 1554 for assistance.
A dance will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Wednesday evening, June 8. Tickets are available from Norman Wolters Cecil Rhoads Dean Ott Gene Majewski and Jack Brandt.
The North Iowa Methodist Churches hold a five day conference starting Sunday June 19 in Marshalltown with 600 delegates and several hundred visitors. Greene attendees include Rev. Clayton Becker and Clyde Stuntz with Calvin Kelly as alternate. A key proposal would reduce districts from eight to seven to improve efficiency with centers planned for Cedar Rapids Dubuque Fort Dodge Mason City Sioux City Spencer and Waterloo.
Milo Ghion Mather a Clarks ville lay scientist died in his sleep on Friday May 27 at 76. Born near Clarksville March 22 1884 he earned a ISU mechanical engineering degree 1907 and later founded Mather Machine Works. He helped establish the Iowa Observatory with a 24 inch Cassegrain telescope completed in 1950. Survivors include son Robert and grandchildren Anne and David Mather. Funeral Tuesday at Hammel and Martin Funeral Home Clarksville with burial at Lynnwood Cemetery.
A Girl Scout Court of Awards will be held in the school gym on Wednesday June 1 at 8 00 PM Badges will be awarded and senior scouts from Charles City will present slides from the Girl Scout Roundup in Colorado A welcome is extended to Brownies Scouts parents and friends The public is invited Refreshments will be served.
Sally Bartels valedictorian with 1.34 GPA and Linda Jackson salutatorian with 1.48 GPA are the top seniors. Bartels, daughter of Mr and Mrs Oscar Bartels, excelled in basketball teaching band speech and student government and held multiple officer roles. Jackson, daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Jackson, participated in concert and marching bands vocal music dramatics and world history awards and led youth fellowship. Bartels plans to attend Iowa State Teachers College Cedar Falls while Jackson will study at Simpson College Indianola.
Mrs. Caroline Ellis hears of the death of her grandmother Mrs. Caroline Lena Kollman Sievers 84 in a Chicago hospital from old age complications. She leaves four daughters Mrs Herman Chotzke Mrs Ted Breihan Mrs Walter Dahl and Mrs Wilhelmina Poppe and two sons Trarry and Chris. A brother Herman Kollman of Clarksville also survives. Funeral services and burial will be in Chicago on Thursday afternoon.
Greene Little League and Babe Ruth League teams both lost opening games to Nora Springs last Thursday, then won against Floyd to post 1 and 1 conference records. Nora Springs scored early and added the fifth inning tiebreaker in the Little League, while Dale Poppe limited hits in the Babe Ruth game despite seven Greene errors. The Little League topped Floyd 11-10 Monday night, with Bramer and Gabe on the mound and Daryl Barnett collecting three hits. Both teams travel to Marble Rock Thursday for league games, then host Rudd next Monday.
Requiem Mass for Nicholas Frank Nixt held at St Marys Church Greene on May 24. He died suddenly May 21 at home. Born July 29, 1880 near Marble Rock, he married Mary Kiefer October 30, 1906. Survived by wife, son Wilbert, daughter Irene Katcher, five grandchildren, three brothers Simon Dubuque Matthias Marble Rock Peter Greene. Burial in St Marys Cemetery. Hamiltons Funeral Chapel in charge.
Ed Barth is a patient at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City for treatment. The hospital stay centers on his ongoing medical care and recovery under physician supervision. Charles City officials have not released additional details about his condition.
Mrs John Scott received word of the death of her brother Leo Hall 48 of Rockford at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City of a heart condition. He had been in hospital since the previous Monday. Funeral services are being held this afternoon at Weaver Funeral Home in Rockford with burial in Riverside Cemetery in Charles City. He is survived by his wife and five children Leon of Charles City Lards Mariel Maureen and Marcie at home.
Mr and Mrs Suliwin Smith of Clarksville welcomed a daughter born Saturday May 28 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. Weight seven pounds fourteen and a quarter ounces, named Deborrah Louise. Grandparents are Galen Smith and J Kingery, Mauree Merfeld. Gregory Alan born May 28 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City, weight six pounds ounces. Grandparents Mr and Mrs J Kingery and Mauree Merfeld.

Maureen Allison daughter of Mr and Mrs Harold Allison Greene will be Miss Greene and a candidate for Miss North Iowa at the Band Festival in Mason City on Tuesday June 14th. She just completed her senior year in Greene Community School and was chosen by band members as Greene's candidate. She was active in band mixed chorus glee club basketball tennis speech and class plays and served as drum majorette.
Greene High School principal Donald Bachman releases the second semester honor roll naming juniors Shirley Bruns Carol Crosby Saundra Curtis Larry Gabe Tom Green Hita Kepple Jeanette Lindell Diane Murphy Donna Reed Steve Rottler Judy Spratt Mary Lou Squires Sally Townsley Dennis Wunsch and others across sophomore freshman and eighth grade groups with denoted straight asterisk markers.
Herman Beenken of Morrison, age 29, was found guilty by a district court jury on May 4. He was arrested by the State Patrol in Parkersburg on August 24. Beenken paid a $300 fine plus $79.27 in costs.
Republicans and Democrats will hold primary elections next Monday June 6. Voters in Coldwater township Greene town vote at City Hall 8 am to 8 pm. Dayton township residents vote at Packard School 8 am to 8 pm. New voting machines will be used countywide with officials available to assist. Voting eligibility requires 21+, Iowa residency six months, county 60 days, and township 10 days. Names on ballots include Erbe Nichols Schroeder for governor and Grassley among the state tickets.
Vandals broke into the Frith Greene Rendering Company between 8:00 and 10:30 Saturday evening and caused extensive damage. They damaged tanks and calcium sacks, splashed contents on the floor, cut a conveyer belt, dumped partially cooked products and arease barrels, and vandalized lockers and the locker room. The company offers a 100 reward for information leading to arrest and the sheriff's office is investigating causing a lengthy cleanup before operations resume.
Committal services were held yesterday for Secott M. Mathers stillborn at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City Saturday. Rev Clayton Becker of First Methodist officiated with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery Baby land. Williams Mortuary handled arrangements. Surviving are the parents grandparents Mrs Jennie Mathers Rockford and Mr Mrs Abel Heitland Geodell.
Mrs. George Hamilton presents her piano students from the third grade up in a recital at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o clock. The public is invited to attend.
