A community publication lauds the 1961 graduates as an exceptional group with record achievements. Dennis Wunsch, a standout student employee, is praised as a fine scholar and athlete. The note wishes health and good fortune to the class in their future endeavors.
The Whitehead Painting and Decorating Bowling team placed fourth in the Waterloo Courier tournament held last weekend. Waterloo Craft Cochran won with 2758 points, followed by Waterloo Left Handers with 2743 and Charles City Uptown with 2724. Greene totaled 2717, and Vinton 2681. Team members Alma Heckman 399, Ruth Armstrong 426, Evelyn Bohnke 448, Barbara Stock 503, and Dorothy Fischer 494. Each bowler on the top five teams received a silver bowl.
Charles Pagles 81 of Amsterdam New York a former resident of Greene died at his home on May 18 funeral services were held in Amsterdam on Saturday Survivors include three brothers Arthur Pagles Jim Pagles of Greene and Will Pagles of Glidden
A Social Security Administration representative from Waterloo will be at Allison Court House on June 2 and June 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon to help residents file applications for old age survivors or disability insurance benefits, obtain social security numbers, and employer identification numbers. Call Waterloo district office at ADams 4-1554 for information.
The Trail Ride planned for Sunday May 28 has been postponed to a later date. Local organizers announced the delay and urged participants to watch for a new date.
A pot luck supper will be held at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Memorial Day Tuesday May 30 at 5 30 p m. The coffee committee includes Mr and Mrs Verle Barth Mr and Mrs Donald Bachman Mr and Mrs Clyde Stuntz and Mr and Mrs Norman Wolters.
Larry Lee Mehmen, 18, of Waverly, was arrested Monday by the Sheriff’s Office in Alison on a charge of securing beer as a minor. He allegedly bought beer in a Clarksville tavern Saturday night, was arraigned in Aplington Justice of the Peace Court, bond set at 300 dollars, and released after bond was furnished.
The Junior Senior banquet and prom occurred Saturday night May 20 in Greene High School auditorium with a Hawaiian Cruise theme. Seniors and guests enjoyed a tropical setup, student speakers, and dancing to Eddie Randall and the Downbeats, followed by a movie on campus.
John Richard Bailiff of Waverly faced speeding charges and was fined 10 dollars with 4 dollars costs in Mayor Kelly's Court. The incident reflects local enforcement actions for traffic violations.
Ronata Jenison age 18 of Clarksville was arrested Saturday by Sheriff Pete Boomgarden on a larceny charge. Jenison allegedly stole four hub caps from a Clarks ville garage, appeared in Justice of Peace Court in Allison, pleaded guilty, and paid a $114.00 fine plus costs before being released.
Pete E. Timmer and Jerome F. McDermott have signed contracts to teach at Greene Community School. Timmer will teach high school Biology and some Junior High Science after graduating Wartburg College with a science major from Clarksville. McDermott, a Nebraska State Teachers College graduate with chemistry and graduate work at Iowa and Missouri, comes from Oto Iowa and has three years at Quimby teaching science and coaching girls basketball. he will teach Chemistry Physics and Junior High Science in Greene and he and his wife have two children.
Robert Siemens nine year old son of Mr and Mrs Henry Siemens suffered a left eye injury when a rock thrown by a power lawn mower struck him. He was admitted to Mercy Hospital in Mason City for treatment on Tuesday May 16.
The Cole Circus, celebrating its 51st year, will perform in Greene on Friday June 2 as a Greene Commercial Club sponsored event. About twenty trucks with over 100 animals forty staff and gear arrive Friday morning with tents going up around 7 00 am. Elephants assist in erecting the setup and wild animal cages will be open for inspection 9 00 am to 11 30 am. Tickets for matinee and evening shows are on sale through Commercial Club members.
Airman Keith E. Maier, son of Mrs. Helen Allan of Greene Iowa, completed basic training at Lackland AFB Texas and now attends Aircraft and Missile Maintenance Specialists technical training at Chanute AFB Illinois. He is a Greene Community School graduate. Training selects based on interests and aptitudes, with reassignment to the school after five weeks. After special technical training, airmen are assigned to USAF units.
Sara Jane Green, a Greene Community High School sophomore, won the district tennis title at Waterloo on May 13 defeating Barbara Wilson and Barbara Diehl to reach the finals. She tied for third at the state tournament, beating Judy Johnson and Judy Hofsommer before losing to Karen Moser in the semifinals.
The Greene Firemen finished a six week firefighting training school conducted weekly Mondays in Greene. Captain Harrold Schurtz of the Mason City Fire Department led the sessions. Sponsored by the Firemanship Training Department of the Engineering Extension Program of Town State University in Ames, the group learned firefighting methods and proper equipment use.
In Iowa City Bob Barnett was admitted to Veteran's Hospital on Thursday for treatment. Mrs Mae Morfoot is in Cedar Valley hospital for treatment after a fall at her son-in-law and daughter's home. Mrs Louis Freese is recovering after hip surgery at Cedar Valley Hospital. Judy Kingery nine is a patient at Cedar Valley hospital for observation and treatment after a fall from a gas tank on Sunday.
Mrs Henry Carney 86 formerly of Nashua died Thursday night at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City She had been at Starr Rest Home for three years Born November 23 1874 in Germany daughter of Mathew and John Kirsch She survived by a brother John Kirsch Charles City a sister Mrs Charles Hurd Greene twelve nieces nine nephews Funeral services were held Monday at St Marys Catholic Greene with burial in Greenwood Nashua Williams Mortuary arranged the services
Miss Maude Landis aged 88 died Tuesday at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 at Hamilton's Funeral Chapel.
The Youth Center sponsors a record hop at the school auditorium on Saturday evening May 27 starting at 8 00. All high school and college students are invited to attend with parents chaperoning the group.
Greene Ramblers roll to a 6 3 sub state win over Fredericksburg after a 2 1 district victory over Rockwell Swaledale. Doug Marsh allowed one hit in five innings with nine strikeouts as Ken Barth drove in three and Gabe, Marsh, Barth and Rottler contributed late for Greene.
Mrs George Hamilton presents two piano recitals on Sunday May 28 and Sunday June 4 at 3:00 PM in the Presbyterian Church. Public is cordially invited.
Berkeley couple Mr and Mrs Don McClelland announce the birth of son Mark Timothy on May 11 weighing 7 pounds 9 ounces. Kamiseya Japan lieutenant junior grade and Mrs Clair Raney report daughter Laurie Claire born May 18 weighing 6 pounds 13 ounces. Allison couple Mr and Mrs Craig Fishel welcome son Clint Charles born May 16 at Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo weighing 7 pounds 9 ounces.
Greene School hosts Baccalaureate on Sunday May 28 at 8 00 PM with Rev G S Knutson delivering the sermon and Gloria Day handling music. Commencement follows Wednesday May 31 at 8 00 PM with Wartburg College assistant H C Engelbrecht as speaker and various presentations and awards by school officials.
Butler County residents bought 568,902 dollars of U S savings bonds in the first four months of 1961, reaching 50 percent of the county’s annual quota. The county’s April sales totaled 158,554 dollars, with town average 41 percent and national 36 percent. John McWhirter of Allison chaired the program as volunteer.
Memorial Day services are set for Tuesday May 30. Veterans of Foreign Wars American Legion Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts along with the Greene High School band will march from City Hall. The 10 30 service at the bridge includes a band number wreath lowering by Girl Scouts a prayer by Rev Clayton Becker and taps. Buses will shuttle veterans band members ministers and scouts to the cemetery. Rose Hill Cemetery service begins about 11 00 with two band numbers prayers by Rev G F Butler General Logan orders read by David Osier the Gettysburg Address by Jane Witwer and wreath placement on a grave.
