Butler County Social Security Recipients Reach 1744 in 1960

By year end 1960 Butler County had 1 744 people on Federal old age survivor and disability benefits per the Waterloo district office manager. December 1960 benefits totaled 101 373 with 12 3 percent more recipients and 13 624 more in monthly payments than December 1959. Retired workers, wives and dependents, children and widows comprised the monthly total across multiple beneficiary groups.

Restaur ant Operators of Iowa hosted a Coffee on the House bene fit for Mentally Retarded Children of Town. Dick and Fern Witwer owners of Riverside Cafe joined the event and contributed 24 dollars to the fund.

Death of Former Lutheran Pastor H Stughs

Word was received of the death of Rev. H Stughs 287 former pastor of the Lutheran Church here who died last week after a week of illness at his Milwaukee Wisconsin home He served St Peters from May 1913 to Sept 1918 After leading a Wisconsin congregation he retired in 1924 and moved to Milwaukee.

Sixteen Earned Points in District Track Meet Friday

Rambler Tracksters scored across 13 schools in Osage in the Class A district meet. Dennis Wunsch set a district record in the 220 yard dash, Larry Gabe added to the football throw, and Greene placed first in the medley relay. Vern Gard to Attend Institute for NSF Summer Program

One hundred high school teachers from 24 states were selected for the National Science Foundation summer institute at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City running July 3 to August 25. The eight week program, funded by a 128,900 grant, offers institutes in chemistry geology physics and mathematics with 25 teachers per institute. Participants receive travel allowances and 600 for attendance plus dependent allowances for married teachers. NSF covers tuition and fees. Vern Gard of Greene will join the chemistry division.

Plan Record Breaking Season at Winnebago Scout Reservation

Scotty Thompson, director of the Winnebago Scout Reservation, predicts a record season based on early registrations. The 362 acre site, three miles north of Marble Rock, Iowa, opens June 18, 1961 with five camping periods for Scouts 11 and older. About 1100 boys expected to attend across troop-led camps at $17 per period with a $3 registration fee. The camp features nature trails, rifle and archery ranges, swimming, canoeing, lifesaving training, and campfire programs. Plan Summer Typing Course at Greene Community High School

A summer typing course will run at Greene Community High School starting June 12. Classes meet Monday through Friday from 9 to 12, with enrollment open to grades 8 through 12 and adults. Instructors are Gerald Stephenson and Vern Gard. Fee is 5 dollars and students may earn one semester credit.

Dr William Grossheim to Observe 40th Ordination Anniversary

Dr William Grossheim, associate pastor at First Presbyterian Davenport, will celebrate the 40th anniversary of his ordination on May 22. A native of Cincinnati, he previously led Greene and other Iowa churches, studied at Dubuque and Lenox College, and now resides with Mrs Grossheim at 2023 N Ohio Ave Davenport with two grown children.

Nichols Family Guests Visit Kelly Household

Dr and Mrs Roger Nichols and daughters Kathleen and Wendy spent three days visiting in the home of Mr and Mrs Calvin Kelly and daughters. The Nicholses lived four years in Dhahran Saudi Arabia where Dr Nichols was staff manager at a hospital set up by the Arabian American Oil Company. Dr Nichols is a friend and former schoolmate of Mr Kelly.

Mark Edward Maxwell died at University Hospitals Iowa City after a leukemia illness of about fourteen months. Born December 11 1953 in Charles City he lived in Greene before moving to Charles City three years ago. He is survived by his parents two brothers James and Robert one sister Sylvia and grandmother Olga Dickinson. Funeral services were at Congregational Church Charles City at 10 00 Monday with Rev George O A McKinley and burial followed at Rose Hill Cemetery Greene.

Wartburg Official to Speak at May Commencement

H. C. Engelbrecht, assistant to Wartburg College president in Waverly Iowa, will deliver the principal address at the May 31 1961 high school commencement in the gym. A longtime educator and public figure Engelbrecht holds a master's degree from Iowa University and has leadership roles in Scouting church and civic groups. He joined Wartburg in 1949 as head of public relations and is now a college administrator with two sons two of whom pursue Navy service and architecture respectively.
