The editor weighs in on debt as a trap and the tough road for U S negotiators with North Vietnam amid student riots. He notes early meetings may consist of name calling but prefers rhetoric to grenades and cites French disillusionment with DeGaulle diplomacy.
The girls and boys golf teams finished second in sectionals last weekend earning district berths on May 17 and 18 at Decorah. Charles City led the girls with 424, followed by Greene 434 and Newman of Mason City 445. Newman’s Diane Cross was medalist with 98 and Kris Pelz of Charles City was runner-up with 100. The Ramblerettes and Ramblers posted strong scores, with the girls led by Pelz 100 and the varsity boys led by Kienast and Denny with 80s. The district dates and site are Decorah. The Ramblerettes later defeated Hampton 222 to 227, and the reserves 240 to 258. The Ramblers beat Manly and Rockford in prior meets, giving the teams a 9-1 and 5-3 record respectively for the season.
Walter Wunsch of Wunsch Plumbing and Heating Inc. Greene attended a Lennox Industries Dealer Training School in Marshalltown. The program showcased the latest air conditioning service techniques with engineers from the factory presenting.
Audit by Auditor of State Lloyd R. Smith confirms Butler County 1967 finances with real and personal property valuing 41.6 million and 9.34 million in monies and credits. Tax collections show 3.29 million current, 2.10 million school districts, 0.30 million cities, with 27,819.37 in delinquent taxes and 41,812.63% delinquent collection rate. Warrants outstanding amount to 56,156.50, and fines total 16,257.44. County offices show year end balances across Auditor, Treasurer, Clerk, Recorder, and Sheriff. Investments include 200,000 in certificates of deposit earning 9,000 interest for the general fund. Some clerical corrections noted.
John Vernon Gersema, SP 5, arrived at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Gersema, for a 30 day furlough. He completed eleven months with the First Infantry Division near Saigon, Vietnam and will resume service for six more months after the furlough.
Myron Beguelin son of Mr and Mrs Francis Beguelin and Sherill Peterson of Clarksville were treated for injuries after a semi trailer failed to stop at a T intersection near Amboy Minnesota on May 4. Myron received a mild brain concussion and bruises while Sherill suffered lacerations a broken ankle and chest injuries. The tractor unit owned by H and M Transport of Rudd was demolished.
The Annual Revue by high school students will be held this evening at 7 30 p m in the high school auditorium. A variety program is planned and the public is invited to attend.
Six men from Butler County left for Fort Des Moines April 30th to be inducted May 1st. Two of the six, Bruce D. Whitaker of Iowa City and Alan C. Trees of Greene, reported as volunteers. Those drafted were Lowell A. LeMaster Clarksville Harold D. Miller Parkersburg Dewey R. Johnson New Hartford and Richard A. Wihlm Greene. Thomas R. Poland Clarks ville enlisted in the regular army for three years. All are at Fort Bliss Texas for basic training. Four more will depart May 27th for induction, making ten from Butler County in May. Twenty-two will undergo preinduction physicals May 22nd. June induction call will be for four men.
The Ramblers defeated Allison 7 to 1 on Monday behind Gary Johnson who pitched a 1 hitter with 12 strikeouts and 3 walks. Allison’s only run was unearned. Greene led a late scoring burst in the sixth inning with Eimers, Netleton, and Sanders delivering key hits as four more runs crossed.
Ottumwa resident DuWayne Starkweather son of Mrs Cecil Starkweather of Greene has been elected vice-president of Region VI of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He previously led the Ottumwa Jaycees and will start the new post July 1. He works as a technologist at the Southeast Tow a Blood Bank in Ottumwa. His wife won Jaycee Ettes state treasurer at the convention in Iowa City.
A Boy Scout Court of Honor will be held at the Lutheran Church parlors in Greene on Monday May 20 at 8:00 p m. Advancement awards will be presented to local scouts and explorers and the Eagle Award will be given to Greg Dralle and Jeff Dralle. The public is invited.
Twenty Iowa State University veterinary medical students one teacher and the wife of a veterinary student were honored at the annual College of Veterinary Medicine Honors Convocation in the Great Hall Memorial Union on May 1. Dean R L Kitchell and industry representatives presented awards including the Henry Dale Bergmann Award of 100 dollars to Dean Barnett of Greene for academic standing need and extracurricular participation.
James Shoemaker’s Rambler Tracksters finished fourth among 16 high schools at Blairsburg district. Allen Hogue won the high hurdles and placed third in the low hurdles. Steve Hildebrand was second in the 440, Jim Shultz set a Greene mile record, and Danny Eimers won the two mile. Top five teams listed with Prairie Gowrie leading.
Mr and Mrs Garth Butler returned home Thursday evening May 9 from Detroit Michigan after a week long vacation visiting their son and daughter in law Rev and Mrs John G Butler and their children Elizabeth David and Stephen The trip was by plane.
Edwin Leroy Roy Starkweather 78 died at his Greene home after a brief illness. Born June 17 1889 on a Greene farm, he married Clara Stepp August 4 1909 and farmed southwest of Greene before retiring to Greene. Survived by wife Clara son Clair two daughters Ruth Irene Thelma E five grandchildren five great grandchildren and four brothers. Funeral at United Methodist Church Greene Friday May 17 at 2 pm with Rev Wayne Gjerde officiating. Burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
A summer recreation program for the community youth in grades 1 through 12 is being planned. Activities run June 17 through July 27 with more details to be announced next week.
Butler-Franklin County won the first invitational Special Education Track Meet in Iowa held at Woodward State Hospital School on May 10. One hundred fifty participants aged 9 to over 16 from multiple schools competed in 17 events.

Ken Sutton's girls track team placed third at the district meet in Titonka as Lincoln Center led with 63 points, Titonka 42, Greene 38, with 28 schools competing. Three school records fell and five events qualified for state, including the 320 shuttle relay, 880 medley relay, 320 shuttle hurdles, 440 relay, and 880 relay.

Mr and Mrs Wilbur Klassi depart late Tuesday night for a Caribbean cruise aboard the S S Independence. The voyage includes stops at St Croix St Thomas San Juan and Bermuda with a return docking in New York City on May 22.
The Greene Ramblers finished third at the Corn Bowl Conference Track Meet held in Rockford last night. Riceville won, with the host Warriors in second place.
