In Iowa a flood story frames a call to clear the island below Greene. The editor notes ice jams backing up water toward Coreens and the creamery street area, threatening nearby businesses. He suggests removing trees or dynamiting the island to restore flow, urging local residents or army engineers to act this year.
Bruce Cheney and Edmund Brumskill have been chosen to perform in summer productions for the St. Louis Municipal Opera. They will have small roles and join a 30 member chorus in openings such as Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, with plans later for Camelot and Oliver. Both study under Jane Birkhead at State College of Town Cedar Falls.
Mrs Don Corning of Slater Missouri suffered burns to hands and face when a gas stove exploded on Monday afternoon She and her husband live in a trailer on the swimming pool site Mr Corning works for Shafer Construction Company building the pool She was treated by a local doctor and recuperating at home
Construction finished on a new 72 by 44 foot fertilizer blending plant for Farmers Incorporated Co op Society of Greene. The facility includes a 10 by 30 foot mixing room with 600 ton capacity and features a two ton hopper scale and a two ton mixer. Fertilizers 06-46-0 0-0-60 and 18-46-0 will be handled to specification, with building by Quad States Construction Company of Des Moines.
Mrs Cyrilla OBrien buys the late Josephine Feyereisen s residence on North Main Street Greene and will take possession on June 1.
Greene Commercial Club plans a Welcome Wagon style program with Mrs. Truitt as hostess to greet new residents, deliver welcome letters and distribute gifts through business partners. The club also schedules a larger Fourth of July fireworks display and related children’s races at the Country Club, with possible afternoon swimming races.
The annual awards night will be held in the high school auditorium next Friday evening May 21 at 7 30. Athletic and music awards will be given to students who earned them. Special departmental awards are also made. The program includes the class of 1965 will prophecy and history. Students and parents are urged to attend with no admission charge.
Lyle Delmar Prunty, class of 1966 in Iowa State University College of Engineering, Ames, was honored at a Memorial Union recognition dinner on May NI1th. A 3.5 grade point average eligibility rule applied. Dr. George Christen sen, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, spoke. Lyle is the son of Mr and Mrs L D Prunty of Greene.
James E. Heckman son of Merle and Mrs Heckman of Greene arrives for duty at Chambley Air Base France as an RB 66 Destroyer pilot in USAFE. He is a Greene High School and University of Iowa graduate commissioned in 1950 through the aviation cadet program. His wife Delores Hull and child remain in Greene until housing in France is ready.
High winds Saturday afternoon uprooted trees and damaged structures in Greene county. A hay and cattle shed at Ardean Landers farm southwest of Greene was destroyed and a calf had to be killed. A steel corn crib and pear tree fell at Clair Kepple farm north of Greene, while Floyd Fiddick farm north of Greene lost a steel corn bin and several trees.
James A. Miler sells household goods and miscellaneous items at public auction at his Greene home. Auctioneer Franklin Schuknecht will conduct the sale starting Saturday afternoon May 22 at 1:00 o'clock.
Greene Ramblers beat Waverly Warhawks 3 1 after the warhawks started Hertel struggled in the first inning. Ott struck out 10 in six innings for Greene. In relief, Jerry Fischer faced two on and retired the side. Greene followed by defeating Dumont 7 2 with three first inning runs and strong pitching by Lynn Gabe and Jim Merfeld. The Ramblers will host Charles City High School on Friday.
Mrs. Geo Merfeld dies at Clark Nursing Home after illness. Daughter Cecelia Loughton born January 26 1895 in Mor, Iowa. Surviving include four sons Paul Eugene Maurice and three daughters Ruth Keeling Margaret Tolliver Lucille, plus twenty-two grandchildren and a brother Bernard Loughron. Funeral at St Mary's Church conducted by Rev Joseph Murphy. Burial in St Mary's Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
The Iowa Division of the American Cancer Society announces living memorials for Butler County residents including Bruno Fe Leslie Swick Duane Lande Dale Van Eman Blanchen LeRoy Miller A H Kushank Paul Shafer and Donald Frangen Funds support ACS programs services for medically indigent cancer patients and cancer research projects.
A mixed two foursome golf tournament will be held at the Country Club on Monday May 31 starting at 2:00 p.m. The event will be followed by a hamburger meal.
Visiting Mother Sp 4 and Mrs Le Williamson arrived from Fort Riley Kansas for a 30 day furlough in the home of his mother Mrs Leel Williamson Lyle and Leel He will sail from Oakland California on June 10 for Korea where he will be stationed for 13 months Williamson serves with Armored Intelligence and reenlisted after four years two and one half years in Augsburg Germany Mrs Williamson will reside at Junction City Kansas during his Korea posting.

Boyd Crandall is back at home after a brief stay at Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City for treatment. Bruce Menken has returned home from Park Hospital in Mason City after a three week stay following back surgery.
Dean W. Uhlenhopp of Garwin, a former Butler County resident, will head the Allison-Bristow schools for the coming year, beginning July 1. He succeeds Supt. Co. Long and will relocate with his wife Vae Dralle and four sons from Garwin to Allison.
A Court of Awards will be held at the elementary school on Wednesday May 26. The public is invited and parents are urged to attend. Practice for this event will be on Monday May 24 at 2 00 oclock p.m.
PFC and Mrs Bruce Maier and Gary Lee depart Monday for Fort Bragg North Carolina where he will be stationed until October for discharge. En route they will visit the Crawford family in Effingham Illinois after six weeks with the Allan and Barth households following two years in Japan.
The district observes Baccalaureate at Greene Community High on Sunday May 23 at 8:00 PM and Commencement on Tuesday May 25 at 8:00 PM. Rev Darrell Fryman will deliver the Baccalaureate sermon. Rev Wayne Gjerde assists with invocation and benediction. Glenn pl. nolmes of Iowa State University will address graduates on "The Destiny of Decision." Local American Legion Auxiliary members sell poppies Friday and Saturday May 2 and 22 to support veteran rehabilitation and child welfare programs.
The final concert of the year by the Elementary and Junior High Music Department is tonight at 7 45 in the high school auditorium. Featured are elementary and junior high choruses directed by Miss Marilyn Bundy plus the 5th grade Beginners Band 6th grade Cadet Band and the Junior High Band directed by Ray Holtz. Music Mothers will provide refreshments and tickets are available from music students or at the door. Everyone is invited to attend this last concert of the year.
The Rambler golf team defeated Riceville in two meets. The first nine hole match ended with a 15 stroke margin, the second on Friday at 179 to 209. Greene's top scorers were John McRoberts 44, Jim Truitt 44, Steven Barnett 45, Greg Drakle 46.

Mr and Mrs Henry Dralle left Sunday to spend three months in Europe. Their son and daughter in law Mr and Mrs James Dralle brought them to Minneapolis where they left Sunday night for New York City by jet. They sail today on the Queen Elizabeth for a conducted tour of ten countries. They will join a tour group and plan to return August 3 aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam from Rotterdam after visiting Germany.
A Social Security Administration district representative will visit Allison Iowa at the Court House on June 2 16 and 23 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Earl T Johnson district manager reports.
