Ramblers rout Waterloo 14 to 5 and advance as Kanawha looms in the sub state. The piece urges community support for local boys and notes the rainmaker’s two good turns this week aiding farmers and delaying sub state baseball.
Iowa Supreme Court ruled the Greene Community School district was not a legal district due to non contiguous areas. The decision requires termination by September 1, 1957, following a split and merger attempt with Coldwater township district.
Pastor Robert Floy was installed as pastor of St. John s Lutheran Church Wilmar by Dr H W Siefkes president of the Iowa District ALC. A large crowd attended the morning service and installation A Sunday evening reception honored Pastor Floy and family Judy and Kent A devotional was by Rev I J Devies Greene and the sermon by Rev Paul Matthias Clarksville A purse was given to the Floy family.
The annual dinner of the Butler County Tuberculosis and Health Association drew thirty two attendees at the Allison Associated church. New officers include President Mrs Frank Schoneman and Treasurer Mrs Ray Opper man all from Allison. committee chairs span Allison and Greene with Dr Floyd Rolfs of Parkersburg as medical representative. Health topics featured films on Oakdale and on Christmas Seal funding for University of Iowa research. Three active TB cases were reported in Butler county with two patients at Oakdale. Marian Law of Waterloo attended as district field representative.
The State Music Contest for large groups was held at Latimer on Saturday May 4. The concert band directed by Ramon Holtz earned a division one rating while the mixed chorus under Mrs Jim Drakle received a division two rating. The band performed Sequoia by Homer LeGassey and Nut megger s by Osterling. The chorus sang Hear a Song by Hyatt and We Thank Thee Lord by Bartinisky.
Joe Downing suffered a broken right ankle last Monday when a plow lever rose and pinned his ankle to the tractor clutch. He was treated locally and is listed in stable condition with injuries from the incident.
Greene Presbyterian Church, pictured at right, will observe its 85th anniversary on May 19 1957. Organized June 1863 at Hart Schoolhouse, it became First Presbyterian Church of Greene in 1872. The current building, moved in 1921, has undergone numerous upgrades including pews, memorial windows, interior wood, and a new annex in 1955. The church has had 25 pastors with Rev G F Butler serving since 1950. current elders, officers, and the Womens Association are listed.
A Greene group including Town Council Committee Planning Board and local businessmen traveled by bus to Chatfield Minnesota to view mercury vapor color corrected street lighting. They compared the new unit with the old type at Le Roy and plans call for a demonstration unit in Greene within a week.
Eight Greene boys qualify for the state meet at Drake University Des Moines next Saturday May 18 after Friday district meet in Hampton. Second places include Allison Ronnie Juhl Lindell Roger Juhl in medley relay Boyd open 440 Davis open 220 Landers high hurdles and Andersen discus.
Town State College announces 1957 58 scholarship recipients based on need and merit from the Alumni Achievement Fund and the Merit Scholarship Fund. Included is Lynne Johnson daughter of Mr and Mrs William Johnson among those enrolled and receiving $198 awards.
The Holstein-Friesian Association of America reports a registered Holstein cow owned by Ellis and Smith produced 17 008 pounds of milk and 640 pounds of butterfat in a year while aged two. Milking twice daily, Flossie Burke Fobes Sovereign 3866388 achieved the record.
Mrs Caroline Dralle born August 25 1881 daughter of William and Wilhelmina Kammeyer of Allison died May 7 at Cedar Valley hospital Charles City after May 1 surgery. Survived by ten children, 27 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and two brothers. Funeral at St Johns Lutheran Wilmar officiated by Rev J Willis and Rev Robert Floy with burial Vilmar Cemetery.
The Greene Independent baseball team sponsored by the American Legion will host Tripoli this Sunday May 19 at 2 15 pm on the local diamond. Spectators are urged to attend and support the home squad.
Mrs George Hamilton presents a group of piano students in a recital at the Presbyterian Church next Sunday afternoon May 19 at 3 00 o clock. The public is cordially invited to attend.
Dr and Mrs Robert F Watson of Parkersburg announce the birth of daughter Nancy Jean on May 6 at Allen Memorial Hospital Waterloo. The baby weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces. Mrs Watson is former Jeanette MacLeod of Greene. Harold and Mrs Allison welcomed a son born Friday May 16 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 8 pounds 6 ounces named Richard Bryce.
The First State Bank will be closed all day next Wednesday May 22 for a Bankes Meeting allowing employees to attend.
Luella Thomas, a Mercy Hospital patient in Waverly, was brought to Clark Rest Home where she recovers from a fractured knee. She is in a cast and under care.
Greene Community Schools faced legal challenges over contiguous territory. The District Court ruled the district legal, then Coldwater Township joined to fix boundaries. The Supreme Court recently held the district illegal, ordering continued operation to a limited period prior to final disposition.
The Tilton Comedians begin their 1957 season tonight May 16 in the big tent at Rock Island Railroad park. Opening play is The Burlesque Queen with one free lady per paid adult ticket. Additional offerings include Ten Nights in a Bar Room and Sputters Stutters.
Mrs Julia Zimmerman of Aredale died Friday morning May 10 after a stroke on May 4. Born July 22 1870 at Morse Iowa she married John A Zimmerman March 19 1890 in Iowa City. Survivors include three sons three daughters and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Funeral services were at the Methodist Church in Aredale with burial in Dumont Cemetery.
The Junior-Senior Banquet will be held Saturday evening May 18 at 6 50 in the high school auditorium. Freshmen will act as waiters in a themed Oriental Gardens. The Rockets from Mason City will provide music for the prom after the banquet and a group will transport to the Strand Theater in Waterloo for a movie.
Jerry Newton sparked Greene High School Ramblers to a 14 5 victory over West Waterloo Wahawks at Wellsburg securing the district championship. Newton hit two homers and a triple driving in six, while Bob Andersen added two doubles and a single as Greene amassed 13 hits aided by wind and strategic pitching changes. The win sets Greene up for the sub state tournament at Mason City with two wins needed to reach the state finals.
At the Johnson farm east of Greene last Thursday about 23 neighbors and friends gathered to plant corn. They brought tractors and equipment and worked from plowing to planting, covering 80 acres. Vivian Kingery of Greece supplied fuel for neighbors' machines. A large group of men and women contributed food for the noon meal.
4 H and FFA members in northeast Town will stage the Fourth Annual Waterloo Quality Lamb Show at Rath's Hultop Yards in Waterloo on Wednesday June 12 starting at 839 am. About 45 lambs are expected as junior members showcase top quality lambs. Lambs must weigh 75 pounds or more be castrated and docked. Blue grade lambs bring one dollar over top market red grade lambs sell for fifty cents below top market based on Rath Market.
A stag supper and dance are planned at the Rouca Grove Golf and Country Club next Tuesday evening April 22. The event will be organized by the service committee with Mr and Mrs Jim Dralle and others in charge and an orchestra will perform.
Adrian Korinke of Sioux City born in Greene died Tuesday May 7 from a heart attack. Funeral services were held Friday in Sioux City. Survivors include his wife and 14 nieces and nephews. He was the last of his family. two sisters and one brother preceded him.
