Nearly 175 people attended the Greene PTA Hobby and Family Fun Show in the school gym last Wednesday featuring the May PTA meeting. Dayon 4 H clubs from Dayton Coldwater and Bennedette led opening with Beth Drakle singing. various youth groups staffed exhibits and a book display.
Iowa anglers should mark May 11 as the start of open seasons for northern pike, walleye and sauger pike in inland waters and the Big Sioux River. Seasons run through February 15 with daily limits varying by area and a continuous open season in boundary waters including the Mississippi and Missouri. Biologists expect strong walleye fishing in Spirit Lake, Clear Lake, West Okoboji, Ingham Lake, and Lost Island.
Mr and Mrs Dale Schroeder welcomed a son born Friday May 3 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 7 pounds 6 ounces named Donald Eugene. Mr and Mrs Leo Landers welcomed a daughter born Thursday May 2 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City weighing 6 pounds 13 3 4 ounces named Rhonda Sue.
Butler County Historical Society holds its first annual meeting this Friday night May 1 at 8:00 at Allison town hall. William J Petersen of the Iowa State Historical Society will be principal speaker. Petersen is noted for his statewide preservation work. Charter memberships are open. dues are $1 per year.
The Butler County Chapter of the American Red Cross held its annual meeting at Allison city hall on Monday April 29 with Elmer Bramer presiding. Officers elected include Elmer Bramer Ardale as Chapter Chairman and Dick Tellinghuisen as First Vice Chairman. The chapter reported on home nursing first aid and servicemen outreach plus a large upcoming swimming program and junior Red Cross enrollment.
Mrs. Donald Allan received a call announcing the birth of a son to her son and daughter in law Mr. and Mrs. Roger Maier of Belton Missouri on May 5. The baby weighed 8 pounds 5 ounces and the family has a four year old daughter. The former Alice Boyenga of Hampton is Mrs. Allan. Mr. and Mrs. James Higgins of Florissant Missouri welcomed a son born April 27 named David Brian weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces. Mrs. Higgins is the former Harriett McRoberts, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin McRoberts.
The Tilton Comedians tent show opens its 1957 season in Greene on Thursday May 16 for four nights. The cast includes Trixie Maskew Tennessee Floyd Patty Emig Buddy Manley Diane Craig Bob Gentry Jim Lawler and Mr and Mrs M R Tilton. The opening play is The Burlesque Queen with other acts Ten Nights in a Bar Room and Sputters Stutters. One lady free with each paid adult on opening night.
The directors of Investors Stock Fund Inc have declared a quarterly dividend of 100 cents per share. It will be paid May 9 to shareholders of record April 30 and is funded entirely from net investment income. This marks the fund's 47th consecutive dividend.
Three local high school students earned medals at the American Institute of Business Typing contest held in Des Moines. Joyce Fiddick won first in Class A Novice, Carol De vies second, and Verlene Barth third, each receiving gold silver and bronze medals respectively. Carol Devies also placed among the top ten girls in the Personality contest with 80 entrants.
Joseph E Naumann of Greene was named to the third quarter honor roll at Loras College Dubuque. A junior, he is among 252 students honored this quarter and is the son of Mr and Mrs William J Naumann.
Butler County Welfare Board members were honored with Certificates of Appreciation from the State Department of Social Welfare. Lowell Olson presented the certificates to the guests. Among the recipients were Freda Maass of Greene and John Schoeneman of Parkersburg, each with long tenures on the board, plus C. C. Fishel of Allison receiving a posthumous award for his father Frank Fishel.
The Iowa School of Religion celebrated its 30th year at the State University of Iowa with Chancellor emeritus R H Fitzgerald of the University of Pittsburgh as the featured speaker. Trustees and guests heard three professors set to interpret the Iowa program in European centers of learning in June, including Frederick Bargebuhr George Forell and Robert Welch. Judge Henry N. Graven of Greene serves on the board of trustees.
Donald Feldman won the Teen-Age Road-E-O sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce last Sunday with 331 points. Kenneth Brinkman placed second and LeRoy Kingery third out of 10 contestants. judges included Highway Patrolman Robert Foster and Deputy Marvin Barth. Local winner advances to state contest in Maquoneta on May 18.
The First Methodist Church hosted baptisms on Sunday led by Rev. Clayton Becker. James Allan McLennan and Jacki Rae Adams were welcomed, along with Robert Brent Wegand and Rose Lee Brooks, plus relatives David Brent Steere and Jo Cole as part of a broader church baptismal service.
A Woltz Studio representative from Des Moines will take photos of Greene children at City Hall on Saturday May 18 from 1 to 6 pm. The event is free and will have no obligation to purchase. Selected prints may appear in The Greene Recorder later.
The Mohawk Relays in Mason City last Saturday saw Greene compete in three divisions the 440 yard 80 yard and 2 mile relays. Pierce Lindell Tavis and Allison finished 3rd in the 440 yard relay and 4th in the 880 yard relay Greene did not place in the 2 mile event. Twe Junior High tracksters took third in the 440 yard relay division with runners Nelson C Litterer Slocum and Grendler. Greene will enter the District Meet at Hampton this Friday.
An “Electronic Range” demonstration will be held at the Mc Roberts Implement Co in Greene on May 15 and 16 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The public is invited to view the display at any time during those hours.
L B Walker known as Deke, age 65, died at his Hampton home after a long illness. Survivors include nine children: Bill and Herbe Walker of Greene, Dick, Leila, Wilma and Fanny of Hampton, Jean of Dumont, Bob of Des Moines, and Eddie of Mount Pleasant. Funeral services were conducted Friday at Green Funeral Home by Rev. Warren G. Zinn, with burial in Hampton Cemetery.
Ubben, a 22 year old Dumont High School 1953 graduate and former Waterloo National Bank employee, is in basic combat training with the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington. His wife Verla Ubben lives in Bristow. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Harm Ubben of Dumont.

Mrs Leslie Smith and fifteen Pleasant Grove No 8 pupils toured Greene Wednesday afternoon, visiting the Post Office, Fast State Bank, Greene Public Library, Interstate Power Co and The Greene Recorder. Mrs George Krull and Mrs Robert Kock provided transportation and accompanied the group.
In Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City Joe Albrecht remains in critical condition after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage.
The Greene Independent baseball squad will hold their first practice next Sunday afternoon May 12 at 1:60 o clock. Jerry Eimers is the coach and everyone interested is welcome.
Greene Community Schools area hosts kindergarten registration on Friday May 17 in the Kindergarten room. Children must be five by November 18 to enroll. a birth certificate and records may be required. Parents are urged to bring needed documents and consider delaying enrollment for late-born children if less mature.
Tony Junker of near Aredue returned Sunday from Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo after two back operations. He was a patient for 61 days and is now improving at home.
