A windy stretch and unseasonal eclipses mold a tense spring for farmers. Dry winds threaten crops while dust and storms complicate fieldwork. Mosquitoes stay scarce amid dusty, stone-filled air. Mother’s Day brings a rare day of perfect weather, easing mood slightly.
Greene High School girls track finished seventh in the district meet at Strawberry Point, won by Aplington with 56 points among 16 teams. Marty Stuntz won the 220 yard dash in 28.2 seconds and the 400 medley relay team of Siemens, Marsh, Linda Stuntz and Martha Stuntz placed first in 56.9. Martha Stuntz will compete at the State Finals in Des Moines on May 16, with the 400 medley and 400 relay also entered.
Mr and Mrs Duane Tiemens of Manchester welcomed a son named Timothy Duane born Wednesday May 6 weighing 7 pounds 5 ounces. Grandparents include John Doran of Tama and Genevieve Tiemens of Greene.
Pvt. Duane A. Schafer, 22, son of Mr and Mrs Otto A Schafer of Greene, will complete advanced training as a cannoneer at the Army Artillery and Missile Center Fort Sill Oklahoma on May 17. He entered the Army December 1963 and trained at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri after graduating in 1959 from Rudd Rockford and Marble Rock Consolidated High School.
Agnes Evelyn Bragg died at Clark Rest Home. Born west of Greene to Walter and Florence Barnett, she married Martin Luther Bragg in 1903. They lived in Howard and Floyd counties before Greene in 1933, raising gladioli commercially. Funeral Tuesday May 12 at Williams Mortuary, Rev. William Whitney officiating. burial Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mr and Mrs Dean Riden of Charles City announce the birth of their son on Saturday May 9 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City. The child weighed 9 pounds 14 ounces and is named Danny Dean. The mother is Sandra Eckhoff. grandparents are Mr and Mrs Leslie Biden of Charles City and Mr and Mrs John Eckhoff of Greene.
At the annual trustees meeting at the State University of Iowa a fund honoring M Willard Lampe emeritus director of the School of Religion was launched. Howard Roach Plainfield was re elected second vice president and Henry N Graven Greene was reelected for a three year term as a National Lutheran Church representative. Rev H W Siefkes Mason City elected to represent the class of 1966 on the board.
Mrs. W. Bathke 86 died in Sumner Tuesday May Sth. Born December 4, 1877, she lived in Sumner area all her life. Survived by three sons Robert Greene Fred Sioux Falls SD Harold Butler IN. three daughters L Morris Sumner Harold Fox Waterloo and Mrs William Donaldson Fort Pierce FL. twelve grandchildren and twenty-two great grandchildren. Husband George predeceased along with son Henry. Funeral Friday May 8 at 2 PM at Lutheran Church Sumner. Burial Lutheran Cemetery Sumner.

The St Ansgar Saints won the Corn Bowl Conference track meet at Charles City with 7514 points. Riceville 354, Rockford 34, Nora Springs 32, Greene 304, North Central 26%, Nashua 224 followed. Darwin Ramker won the 100 yard dash in 10.8 seconds, Jim Curtis captured the 180 yard low hurdles in 23.5, Roger Backer won the shot put at 39 feet 7.5 inches, with Mark Backer second. Greene's Jerry Fischer was second in the mile, Gary Littler fourth in the 220, Jim Curtis fourth in the 120 yard high hurdles. Greene also placed in 440 and 880 relays.

Mr and Mrs Jerry Curtis welcomed a son at Cedar Valley Hospital Charles City on Wednesday May 6 weighing 7 pounds 6 ounces The infant's name is Bryan Keith.
Mr and Mrs Roy Pooley returned from a winter in Tempe Arizona with daughter Eleanor who works at the Arizona State University Library En route they visited Wilbur Max son in Albuquerque Cadet Paul N Burroughs at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs where 2300 cadets were in parade They then visited Paul Pooley and family in Bennington Nebraska with grandson Kent Burroughs who works in Omaha Also Mrs Robert Bixler of Chicago accompanied her grandparents home from Arizona after spending time with Eleanor and the family
Frederick John Koerner 68 died at his Greene home after an extended illness. Born August 28, 1895 in Remsen to Chris and Bertha Koerner, he married Deane Wiersma in 1920 at Orange City. Survived by wife Deane, son Vance of Grundy Center, daughters Dorothy Brandt Des Moines and Wilma Helgeland Northwood, four brothers and six grandchildren. Funeral 2 PM Tuesday May 12 at First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Vander Kooi and Rev. Butler. burial Rose Hill Cemetery. Reid's Funeral Chapel in charge.
The Round Grove Golf and Country Club may host a professional golfer to give lessons if at least thirty students enroll. Interest is open to men women and teens and details are available from Mrs Jim Schroeder or Mrs Sam Sneed.
Mrs James Neessen and Kathy of South Bend Indiana spent two weeks in her parents home. Rev d Mrs I J Deiies. Mr Neessen came Wednesday and left Friday to visit his parents in Cedar Falls enroute home.
Final standings show Miller Real Estate and Nettleton’s Insurance tied in a high finish with team bowls and bowl-offs. High scores include Bob Barth and Elmer Stock with top series. A four pound brown trout weighing 22 inches is listed by the State Conservation Commission as a new big fish record. Taken by Francis Kessel of Waukon on May 2 at Paint Creek, it is the year’s largest brown trout but trails last year’s Iowa record. Only one walleye over nine pounds and a largemouth bass over eight have also been accepted, with anglers urged to submit catches for recording. The first entry in a species becomes the 1964 record until surpassed.
James Galen Mienan of the conservation commission seized an illegal fish trap on the Shell Rock River at night last month. Joe Bailey was fined 30.00 by the Justice of the Peace in Clarksville for possession. The trap was confiscated by authorities.
The last Cub Scout pack meeting of the year will be held next Wednesday evening May 20 at 7 30 in the elementary school. All boys aged 8 to 11 interested in joining Cub Scouts are invited to attend with their parents.
Greene Ramblers beat Rockwell Swaledale 8 to 3 in the sectional semi at Dumont, then lost 11 to 4 to Rockford in the sectional finals. Marsh pitched well in the opener, Ott relieved in the second, while Rockford capitalized on several Ramblers errors and key extra-base hits.
Mr. G. E. Stephenson, Greene High School guidance counselor, is selected for a nine week summer training institute at Central Washington State College Ellensburg WA. The program covers education counseling philosophy personality theory case studies and group process with NDEA tuition and stipend. He is also chosen for a similar program at University of Minnesota and as an alternate to Oklahoma State.
Mrs Frank W Schuknecht age 80 died Tuesday morning at Clark Nursing Home Greene after long illness. She was born June 24 1883 in Pleasant Grove Township Floyd IA moved to Charles City in 1892 married 1902 to Frank W Schuknecht. survived by seven sons Melvin Harlan Vernon Franklin Ivan Galen Elwin, 14 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, one sister Cecile Coffin. services Friday at 2:00 p.m. Hauser Funeral Home Charles City with Rev I J Dreines of St Peters Lutheran Greene officiating. burial Riverside Cemetery Charles City.
Mrs. Sarah Borsa of Greene suffered a fractured hip in a fall at her home on Tuesday morning. She underwent surgery to repair the fracture.
Everett Speaker, Director of the State Conservation Commission, cautioned that people often take wildlife young thinking they are lost. He noted spring and early summer bring many such apparent orphans, underscoring the need to leave birds and animals in place.
