Greene High School Jazz Band Wins State Championship

The Greene High School Jazz Band won the 1976 Iowa High School State Jazz Band championship in Des Moines after advancing from district and festival wins. The band earned two outstanding musician awards and had members recognized by the National Association of Jazz Educators. The event was televised by the Iowa Educational Broadcasting network and hosted by Des Moines area high schools.

Rites Held May 3 for Clara Weiss in Greene

Clara Weiss born Sept 4 1879 daughter of Bernard and Christina Springer Bamker died April 30 after residing on a Clarksville farm most of her life. Survived by five sons and three daughters including Victor Arthur Earl Bernard Wayne Grace and Christine Balkenende. Funeral services were May 3 at St Marys Catholic Church Greene with Msgr Cooney officiating. Reid Funeral Chapel handled arrangements.

Speech and Chorus Awards Night Set for May 12

The Speech and Chorus Awards Night will be held on Wednesday May 12 at 7 30 p m in the old gym. The chorus will sing several selections including their three contest pieces and some new songs. Awards will honor contest and participation work for the year. The speech unit will present prose interpretation by Kelly Ebling and poetry set to music by Deb Meyer plus the Bicentennial choral reading. The public is urged to attend.

The Greene Doctor Dental Committee will meet Sunday May 16 at 7 00 p m downstairs in the Greene Community Center to discuss community health concerns and upcoming events.

The prom dance will take place May 15 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Community Center. Admission is two dollars at the door and the public is welcome. Websterson will provide the music.

Two Iowa Poetry Day Winners Named for Local Students

The Iowa Poetry Day Association informs Mrs. Janet Barnhart that two students earned honors. Dawn Landers, daughter of Wilbur Landers, won first place for Chair With Curlicues and Diane Stanton, daughter of Roger Stanton, received Honorable Mention for Smithsonian. Girl Scout Court of Awards and Fly-Up Evening

The Girl Scout Court of Awards and Brownie Fly-Up will be held on Tuesday evening May 18 at 7 30 at the Elementary School. Badges and Challenge buttons earned during the year will be presented and the bridging ceremony will take place. Parents friends and relatives are invited. A social hour will follow. Fly-up practice is Monday May 17 after school at the elementary school.

Mailbox Improvement Week Set for May 17 22

Postmaster Curtis announced Mailbox Improvement Week from May 17 to 22, a national spring observance promoting mailbox security and appearance. The event kicks off community efforts to repair repaint and improve roughly 24 million rural curbline and star route mailboxes, including 424 served by the Greene post office.
