Butler County Residents Benefit From Social Security

A report by social security district manager Earl T. Johnson shows 2,761 Butler County residents received benefits at year end 1966, totaling 185,033 monthly. Benefits included 2,419 older persons, 254 widows and children, and 88 disabled workers. Iowa statewide beneficiaries totaled 384,941 at 27,431,153 monthly.

Rambler Baseball Advances to District Tourney

Gerald Eimers Rambler baseball team beat Allison 11 to 1 in five innings to reach the district tournament. Lynn Gabe tossed a 1 hitter with 12 strikeouts and contributed in every putout except one. Bruce Nettleton led with two singles and a triple. In the district opener, Greene’s Mohawks defeated Greene 8 to 1 in seven innings, aided by four Ramblers errors.

Harlan Helm Awarded Grant At Greene Community School

Harlan E Helm of the Greene Community School Mathematics Department received a 600 grant from the University Mathematics Summer Institute for high school teachers. The NSF funded program runs June 13 to August 8 with travel and dependent allowances. About 500 applications were received. 66 teachers nationwide were accepted.

Cora Wing Dies in South Dakota at 92

Mrs. Cora Bell Wing 92 died Monday in Canton South Dakota after long Watertown residency. Funeral Thursday in Watertown First Baptist Church with Rev Wayne A Dalton. Burial in Mt Hope Cemetery. Survived by five daughters two sons a sister 28 grandchildren and 56 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by husband a son and several siblings.

Three Girls Track Events Headed to State Meet

Kenneth Sutton's Ramblerette track team reached Des Moines for the state meet with three events qualifying from the district at Monona. The mile relay set a school mark with 4 36.7 as Mary Rottler, Paul Leavens, Jane McRoberts and Ann Allison won. The shuttle relay placed second, the hurdle relay third, while the 880 relay finished fourth and missed state.

Doctors Day planned in Greene for H G MacLeod and B V Andersen

Greene residents set May 18 as Doctors Appreciation Day to honor Dr. H G MacLeod and Dr. B V Andersen for more than 70 years of combined service. The event features a 2:30 p.m. parade, open house at the Elementary School, and a 7:00 p.m. banquet. MacLeod arrived in 1925 from Cleveland and Andersen in 1937 from St Edward Nebraska. Both doctors have deep local ties and long civic involvement.

Butler Red Cross Board Reports Quarterly Meeting

Butler County Red Cross board chair Carl Fleyenga notes layettes for Vietnam shipped via Landover Maryland and 66 knit socks sent to St Louis for military hospitals. Local women knit the socks. Greene, Bristow, Dumont, and Allison contributed. The group plans 15 more layettes and supports Learn to Swim and a First Aid Station at the Butler County Fair. A full drive report will follow.
