County Auxiliary Entertained Soldiers at Marshalltown

Butler County American Legion Auxiliary hosted a birthday party for veterans at the Soldiers Home in Marshalltown on Monday. 4-H And FFA Judging School May 2

About 125 4 H and FFA members will attend the first soil judging school on Thursday May 2 from 1 00 to 3 00 PM three miles west of Allison. Sponsored by Butler Soil Conservation District Commissioners and the Extension Service. Instruction by Frank Schaller J B McAnineh and Ivan Wikner. The event introduces soil types and soil classification in Iowa. Farmers and townspeople are invited to attend and learn about soil judging.

Ramblers Split in Games Past Week

The Greene Ramblers beat Parkersburg 8 5 on the local diamond last Wednesday then lost 8 7 at Allison the next day. Maxwell’s triple sparked the offense, Greene had 8 hits off Eilers, and Joe Allison drove in two with three steals. R Allen’s bases loaded single broke a 7 7 tie in the seventh. The team travels to Dumont next Monday May 6 for the sole contest of the week.

Electricians Mate Third Class Draper Spratt arrived for a 30 day leave to his parents Mr and Mrs R T Spratt. Spratt stationed with the Navy at Key West Florida and has been home for the first time in 18 months Crater is stationed at Key West Florida and this is the first home visit in 18 months.

Harrison's 5e store in Greene prepares for a three day grand opening weekend on Main Street. The event marks the shop’s tenth anniversary since coming to Greene in 1947 after R M Harrison Co purchased the Variety Store from W J Soll. The remodeled self service store has a 38 by 73 foot area with a widened front, two doors, ramp access, new decor, and plans for air conditioning. Greene to Add Power Plant Unit and Street Lighting

Interstate Power Company proposed a $100,000 addition to Greene power plant adding a 1,000 KW unit to ensure a firm emergency power source. The plan includes modernizing the ornamental street lighting with eleven additional lamps and converting to color corrected mercury vapor at a cost over $13,000. Total investments exceed $113,000 for a 15 year extension of the franchise. A special June 18 election will vote on the plan and franchise, with rates unchanged during the period.
