The Mixed League standings show Pin Flys Misques Gutter Rats Cherry Pickers Ramblers and Daredevils with team totals and individual high scores. Misques Pin Flys and Gutter Rats lead in singles and series with Sneed Stock and Lindley among top scorers. Sneed and Stock post high marks among men while Sneed Bliss Sneed, Wedeking lead among women in singles and series.
Butler County American Legion Auxiliary hosted a birthday party for veterans at the Soldiers Home in Marshalltown on Monday. County president Mrs. Walter Kyle led guests including Mrs. Arvid Lindell and Mrs. P. C. Peck from Greene. Dumont Kitchen Clatter Band and two Shell Rock accordionists provided entertainment.
About 125 4 H and FFA members will attend the first soil judging school on Thursday May 2 from 1 00 to 3 00 PM three miles west of Allison. Sponsored by Butler Soil Conservation District Commissioners and the Extension Service. Instruction by Frank Schaller J B McAnineh and Ivan Wikner. The event introduces soil types and soil classification in Iowa. Farmers and townspeople are invited to attend and learn about soil judging.
The Greene Ramblers beat Parkersburg 8 5 on the local diamond last Wednesday then lost 8 7 at Allison the next day. Maxwell’s triple sparked the offense, Greene had 8 hits off Eilers, and Joe Allison drove in two with three steals. R Allen’s bases loaded single broke a 7 7 tie in the seventh. The team travels to Dumont next Monday May 6 for the sole contest of the week.
Pvt Merlyn C Schafer has completed basic training at Fort Chaffee Arkansas and is on a 14 day furlough to his mother Mrs Goldie Schafer. Electricians Mate Third Class Draper Spratt arrived for a 30 day leave to his parents Mr and Mrs R T Spratt. Spratt stationed with the Navy at Key West Florida and has been home for the first time in 18 months Crater is stationed at Key West Florida and this is the first home visit in 18 months.
Harrison's 5e store in Greene prepares for a three day grand opening weekend on Main Street. The event marks the shop’s tenth anniversary since coming to Greene in 1947 after R M Harrison Co purchased the Variety Store from W J Soll. The remodeled self service store has a 38 by 73 foot area with a widened front, two doors, ramp access, new decor, and plans for air conditioning. Toyland sits in the basement, formerly Klassi's paint department.
The fourth annual tri county Rebekah convention will be held Thursday May 2 at the Sumner Legion Hall with registration at 9 00 a.m.
Interstate Power Company proposed a $100,000 addition to Greene power plant adding a 1,000 KW unit to ensure a firm emergency power source. The plan includes modernizing the ornamental street lighting with eleven additional lamps and converting to color corrected mercury vapor at a cost over $13,000. Total investments exceed $113,000 for a 15 year extension of the franchise. A special June 18 election will vote on the plan and franchise, with rates unchanged during the period.

The last Story Hour of the season was held on Saturday at Greene Public Library at noon. April attendance figures show counts for the first and last Saturdays with names of children who had perfect attendance including Charles Berry, Melinda Dralle, Debra Martzahn, Yvonne Rutfridge, Jolene Litterer, Beth Busse, and Anne Curtis.
New residents Vic and Mrs Frederik Nord Moyer are parents of a daughter born Friday at Cedar Valley hospital in Cherries City. The newborn Sheri Lynn weighs 3 pounds 3 ounces. Mr and Mrs Joe Korinke of Rockford Illinois have a son born Sunday April 21 weighing 10 pounds. Dennis Joseph is the name chosen for the child. Mrs Korinke is Elaine Edler, daughter of Mr and Mrs Ymil Edler, and Mr Korinke is the son of Mrs Edith Korinke.
Fay Goodsell was taken to the Veterans hospital in Des Moines last Thursday morning. The move is recorded as a routine transfer to provide medical care at the veterans facility.
The Jaycee sponsored Teen-Age Road-E-O enters its second phase on May 5 on Main Street Greene with a 1:30 pm Sunday test of four obstacle tests plus a driving knowledge written exam. Events rank at Community and National levels, with scholarships totaling 4,500 1,400 and 1,000 and a Washington DC trip for national winners.
A family exhibit is planned for this evening May 1 at the Greene Community Schools gym as the last P.T.A. meeting of the season. The public is invited to attend.
At a large public meeting in Allison, Butler County plans to seek voters’ ok to issue up to 350000 in bonds to erect a new county court house. Attorney John H. Holley and architect David Toenjes outlined aging building needs, storage shortages, and new state requirements driving the proposal.
