It cites Negro student demonstrations affecting discipline of peers, warns of long term harm to equality efforts, and calls on authorities to protect faculty and students from coercion while insisting education standards must improve without intimidation.
Mr and Mrs Dennis Gray of Mason City welcome daughter Kelli Ann born Friday April 25 weighing 8 pounds 9 ounces. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Harold Gray of Mason City and Mr and Mrs B G Brunsma. Great grandmother is Mrs Nelson Cornell of Altus Oklahoma.
G. E. Stephenson, a local high school counselor, was elected to a two year term as senator of the Iowa Personnel and Guidance Association. He was one of three senators representing Chapter 2 with 107 members across 14 counties in north central Iowa. The new Senate meets this weekend in Des Moines at the state convention.
Butler County Board of Supervisors opened bids on April 16 for bridge project L 1711-73-12 a 100 by 28 foot continuous concrete slab over McClure Creek east of Section 7 Shell Rock Township Westendorf Construction Co of Waverly won at 29361.46 with other bids from Taylor-Isenhower Hudson 30823.52 Gobersen Smith Ida Grove 31732.82 Kehe Construction Waverly 32266.08 Brennan Lansing 32577.92 Henkel Mason City 37708.64.
Pfc. Donald Fiddick and his wife Mrs. Fiddick of Alexandria spent two weeks at his father Floyd Fiddick’s home. He has completed heavy equipment maintenance training and will depart April 24 for Houston and then Korea where he will be stationed.
Wednesday night results show First State Bank and S&N leads with scores across divisions and high series from Sam Sneed and Roy Henline. Rollers League lists top pins with Bob Barth and Gordy Wood posting high marks. Amway and O'Brien Standard claim Friday Town and County with Amway winning the first half and chronicled high scorers across two series.
Mrs. William Crowe age 88 formerly Mary Yarger died Thursday April 17 in an Olympia Washington nursing home where she had lived since 1929. She worked as a legal secretary in banks across the Middle West before moving to Olympia. Survivors include two step sons two stepdaughters and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday April 21 in Olympia. Emmett Hanley a longtime friend reported her death.
Richard C. Allan of Parkersburg was elected to a six year term as Commissioner of the Butler County Soil Conservation District. The election coincided with the Biennial Meeting and Banquet on Tuesday evening April 8 at Greene. He succeeds Bernard C. Wysgle, whose term expired this year. Allan has served as Assistant Commissioner for two years and farms with his brother in law Ronald Brocka in Albion Township.
Mrs. Dale Crosby chaired the Coldwater Township Cancer Drive survey reporting $125.35 donated by residents. Funds support cancer research rehabilitation public information and patient care.
A $3,900 damage suit over a cut apple tree was dismissed in Butler County District Court. A jury directed verdict in favor of Mrs. Esther Sellers of Greene due to insufficient evidence that the tree belonged to the neighbors Merle and Ethel Krueger. Testimony showed the Kruegers had no survey of their lot, so ownership could not be proven.
Mr Herbert Barnett returned home Saturday morning April 26 after major surgery at Floyd County Memorial Hospital on April 17.
Infant Kelly Annette, daughter of Mr and Mrs Loren Jacobson of Milwaukee Wisconsin, was born Friday April 25 according to word received by her aunt and uncle Mr and Mrs Allan Jacobson.
Greene lost the second Ramblers game to Rockwell 7 to 1 at Rockwell Thursday. Jerry Shultz opened Greene’s scoring with a first inning single and Warren Johnson scored on an error for Greene’s lone run. Rockwell answered with three unearned runs in the first and four more in the fifth aided by walks and a passed ball. A fourth inning triple play halted a packed Rockwell threat as Dick Stuntz, Randy Knight and Jim Shultz combined on the defensive gem. Gary Johnson allowed 5 hits and 3 earned runs over six innings, walking 10 while Jerry Shultz worked two scoreless innings.
The Greene High School vocal and instrumental departments present a concert tonight in the high school auditorium at 8:00 p.m. The choir closes with Edelweiss Lovers Love the Spring Guantanamora and When Johnny Comes Marching Home. The brass ensemble performs Symphony for Brass and the girls folk group sings. Dances and songs follow. The concert band ends with Mount of Might Phedre Overture and upcoming contest selections.
Greene High School lists third quarter honor roll names but omits Melinda Smith. Smith is a senior at the Greene campus and her status is noted as absent from the published roster.
Dale E. Schroeder, volunteer county savings bonds chairman, reported March sales of Series E and H bonds and Freedom Shares in Butler county were $27,500. The county’s three month total reached $99,301, achieving 20 percent of its 1969 goal.

Mr and Mrs Will Cheney escorted their brother Walter Thorpe to the Veteran's Hospital in Des Moines on Monday where he will undergo treatment for a throat ailment. His address is 3-W, Veteran's Hospital, Des Moines, Iowa.

High school counselor G E Stephenson announces a May 5 meeting at 7 30 p m in the library to inform students and parents about college financing. North Iowa Area Community College counselor Dick Wempen and First State Bank of Greene representative Dale Schroeder will outline aid options including the Guaranteed Student Loan program. Juniors and parents are urged to attend. others may also join.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Klunder welcomed daughter Kara Sue born Thursday April 24 at Floyd County Memorial Hospital Charles City. She weighed 7 pounds 4% ounces and has a sister Kelly and brothers Brook Cameron and Darin. Grandparents are Alvin Klunder, Harry Merfeld. great grandparents Melsanie Klunder Clarksville Daisie Parker Marble Rock and William Steere Sr Greene.
Greene community youth are invited to register for junior and senior lifesaving swimming courses to be held in Greene from June 16 to 27 and July 7 to 18. Registration closes May 9 at Mrs Rutz’s office in the high school. Junior class ages 12 to 15 or grades 7–10 must pass a preliminary swim test and buy the textbook. senior class, 16+ or grade 11+, must also buy the textbook. Classes run weekdays with a tenth day for weather makeups. swimmers provide their own suit and towels and pay a $1 maintenance fee for the pool.
Newman defeats Greene 5 to 5 in first round sectional action at Mason City as unearned runs in the first inning set the pace. Pitching by Gary Johnson and the Lloyd brothers highlighted the game, with Greene committing five errors. Greene to Fredericksburg next contest.
The Ramblerettes remain undefeated after easy golf wins over Charles City and New Hampton in a tri school meet at Charles City and later over Newman of Mason City. Greene boys and girls posted mixed results with varsity and reserve teams beating Riceville while the boys fell to Newman and Mason City.

One Greene mign school marching band will appear at the annual Pella Tulip Festival in Pella Iowa on May 8 9 and 10. The group leaves by bus at 7 00 a m on Thursday and returns that evening. Band members sell Heath Miniatures to finance the trip. The festival features two parades at 2 30 p m and 8 15 p m with hopes of a concert. Tulip Time honors Hollanders who settled in 1847 and gives Pella the meaning City of Refuge.
Greene High School drummer Kent Jacobsen has been invited to tour as guest soloist with Wartburg College Knightlighters and as a combat specialist with the college concert band. The group tours Iowa Indiana Ohio Maryland DC and Illinois with a Washington concert on the steps of the House of Representatives. They will perform at Neumann Auditorium on May 8 at 8 0 pm. Jacobsen, a sophomore at Keene High School, has earned two straight Division I ratings at state drum solos and is the son of Mr and Mrs Allan Jacobson. Other Greene High alumni also join the tour, including Sue Brinkman and Duane Brinkman of the Wartburg College band.
Fifteen young people were confirmed into the membership of St. Peter's Lutheran Church at the 10:15 a.m. worship service Sunday. Leon Kampman six suffers second and third degree burns over 20 to 30 percent of his body. He was burning clothes on a trash burner when a liquid ignited a blaze. He was taken from Clarksville to University Hospital Iowa City via ambulance, with his brother and parents nearby. He attends the local elementary school where his father is custodian and the prom was being prepared.
