Limited roster timing forces focus on events with available players as drives for charity donations continue to support medical advances amid borrowing difficulties.
Trout fishing should be particularly good as streams were stocked last week in Allamakee Clayton Delaware Dubuque Fayette and Winneshiek Counties. Streams listed include French Creek Village Creek Clear Creek South Cedar Creek Plum Creek Elk Creek Richmond Springs Swiss Valley Creek Otter Creek Mink Creek North Bear Trout River Trout Run and Twin Springs. The trout stamp law becomes effective July 4 and licenses may be purchased at fishing license outlets.
Butler County voters approved a maintenance and storage shed proposition for Allison. The measure won 631 yes to 477 no among 1,108 ballots, passing by 56.95 percent.
The Corn Bowl Conference Faculty Golf Tournament was played at Round Grove Golf and Country Club on Saturday with 29 entrants from conference schools. Jerry Coe of Rockford won the 18 hole event finishing two 9 hole rounds of 43 for a total score of 86.
John H Backer 76 died Monday at his Marble Rock area home after months of illness. Born in Germany November 26, 1884 he lived near Charles City before moving to Marble Rock three years ago. Surviving wife Augusta five sons and three daughters with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Pvt. Sherman J. Needham of Greene Iowa a member of the 1st Division 28th Infantry supports the Fifth Army rifle and pistol matches at Fort Riley Kansas through May 4 The top marksman from the 18 state Fifth Army area competes for trophies and a chance to go to All Army championships at Fort Benning Georgia in June Needham serves as a scorer with Company B at the fort He is 19 and joined the Army last January after basic at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri A 1959 Greene High School graduate he later attended Iowa State University Ames
The Greene Lanes Bowling team won the team event in the Iowa State Lutheran Bowling Tournament at the Tavern on the Green in Waterloo Sunday with a 3044 score including handicap. Members Elmer Stock Harold Allan Jim Sexter Ed Poock and Bill Klein schmidt received trophies and prize money of 250. High games were Stock 654 and Poock 264 for 611.
Don Neely, a senior at the Presbyterian Seminary in Dubuque, filled the pulpit last Sunday. Assisting in the service were Paul and Neil Burroughs. Mrs. Neely is Elaine Barnhart, daughter of Mr and Mrs Leslie Barnhart.
A Friday evening crash three miles south of Greene on Highway 14 involved a 1959 Oldsmobile Station Wagon driven by Richard A. Young 37 of Minneapolis passing a dump truck owned by Robert Eugene Peacock 22 of Aredale. Young suffered forehead bruises and was summoned for passing within 100 feet of an intersection. Oldsmobile damage estimated at 1060 dollars and truck damage around 100 dollars.
The Sixth Annual St George Award Dinner by the Catholic Committee on Scouting for the Archdiocese of Dubuque occurred Sunday evening April 23 at Blessed Sacrament Church Hall Waterloo. The award honors outstanding Catholic laymen for service to Catholic Scouting. Recipients included Edward Kadena Waterloo Eldon Laugeling Guttenberg Tom Albrecht Greene and Frank Martin Cedar Rapids. Rev John Morrissey Davenport Diocese urged adding supernatural motivation to Scout activities.

Kenneth Kugel 18 and Conrad Kugel 20 of Cedar Falls were charged in Butler and Black Hawk counties with malicious injury to fixtures after admitting to pulling down about 15 mail boxes on rural roads. Paul Youngberg 17 of New Hartford and a 16 year old were also involved. the latter was not charged. Youngberg was turned over to juvenile authorities. Postal officials notified the case but would take no action. Destroying mail is federal, but pulling down private boxes is not.
Clarence Eugene Hovenga, 23, of Aplington, was charged with making beer available to a minor and driving with a suspended license. Deputy Marvin Barth arrested him. he was arraigned in Allison justice court and released on $500 bond for each charge.
The Board of Education accepted resignations from several faculty members for reasons from marriage to further study. New elementary hires include Lula Smith for Kindergarten Joanne Schmitt for First Grade and Kay Nordmeyer for Fifth Grade. Vern Gard named high school principal. Nora Springs’ Jack Sandy to coach and teach physical education and social studies. Williams’ Kenneth Sutton to coach girls basketball and assist in football and baseball. Vacancies include two Junior High English positions French Latin, and a Chemistry physics teacher.
The Parent Teachers Association will meet this evening at 8 oclock in the high school auditorium. Officers will be installed and the program will focus on library and reading.
Sam Ritter was preceded in death by two sisters, Mrs. Ed Shultz of Greene and Mrs. Wm. Hank of Wisconsin, according to the correction notice.
New residents Mr and Mrs Melvin Yerkes celebrate the birth of a daughter named June Meleigh on Thursday April 27 at Cedar Valley Hospital Charlies City. The newborn weighed 8 pounds 7 ounces and the family returned home on Sunday. Captain and Mrs Stanley N Graven of Fairchild Air Force Base Spokane Washington announce the birth of a son Kendal Endre on Monday May 1 Captain Graven is the son of Judge and Mrs Henry Graven.
The State University of Iowa school of religion re elected twelve trustees Monday with one new member named. Henry N. Graven of Greene, judge, was named president for the coming year. Philip D. Adler became first vice president, W. W. Morris second vice president, Bruce E. Mahan secretary, Elmer Miller treasurer, and Dewey B. Stuit joined the board. Re-elected trustees include Adler, Msgr. J. D. Conway, George E. O Malley, R. H. Fitzgerald, O. D. Foster, Leslie G. Moeller, C. A. Phillips, and others, with church and university representatives aligned to various denominations.
The Butler County Historical Society will hold its annual meeting Friday May 12 at 7 30 p m. Reports by committees finances and membership will be given. Plans for future activities will be made. All members are urged to attend.
About 225 attended an open hearing at Greene Public School to question the board's move to terminate Norman Bud Wolters. Wolters, the head track coach and athletic director, argued he had no warning or chance to respond. Board president Dr. B. V. Andersen said changes aim to improve academics and athletics, replacing Wolters with coaches for girls basketball and other sports, and voting to keep the termination in place amid the discussion. One member, August Backer, was absent due to his father John Backer Sr.’s death.
Greene Ramblers swept Rockford 15 to 5 and St Ansgar 10 to 2 to win the Corn Bowl Conference title. Marsh pitched 55 strikeouts in 24 innings this spring, and Greene advances to the sectional at Allison Fairgrounds May 6 with Dumont as first round host.
Mrs John Hamilton underwent major surgery Tuesday morning at Cedar Valley Hospital in Charles City.
The Rambler track squad finished third at the Comet Relays in Charles City with firsts in 440 yard and 880 yard relays by Green Kingery Rottler Wunsch and Steere Kingery Rottler Wunsch. At the Bison Relays Buffalo Center, Rambler teams won two firsts in 440 and 880 relays and set a new medley and school record. fourth in shot put and other placings included Brunsma in high hurdles and Green in the 100 yard dash.
Mrs Robert Curtis returns home Saturday from Worrell Hospital Rochester Minnesota after major surgery on April 13. Mrs Ber Nice Culbertson and Stephanie brought her to Greene and returned to Rochester on Sunday.
Funeral services were held at St. Patrick's Church in Dougherty for Jacob Ewen 84 who died Sunday at a Mason City hospital. A lifelong Dougherty resident he farmed there before retirement. Survivors include his wife Helen MecAhigney four sons Walter Mason City Leo Clear Lake Edward and Clem Dougherty four daughters Hannah JansEN Emil Engels Agnes Foxen Rockford and Kathryn Merfeld Dougherty. He was preceded in death by a son a daughter and a grandson.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Gist have returned to Greene after spending the winter months in Phoenix Arizona They are presently staying in the John Hamilton home while Mrs Hamilton is in the hospital.
Greene High School vocal students competed in the State Class B Music Contest in Tripoli. Division one honors went to the girls trio Sandra Edwards Diane Cheney Vae Brinkman and the girls quartet Barbara Crocks Vae Brinkman Diane Cheney Jane Kretzschmar plus the boys double quartet Paul Hamilton Bill Thompson Tom Teeple John Backer Don Yeines Bruce Cheney Earldean Buttjer Eldred Kingery. Also tenor Paul Hamilton bass Bruce Cheney and piano Gloria Day. Division two ratings went to Sandra Edwards Barbara Crooks Betty Wirth Loveta Reed Gloria Day Vae Brinkman Martha Stuntz Judy Hildebrand Bill Thompson Tim Bramer. Two rating groups included girls sextet A and B girls quartet A and double mixed quartet.
